Default Need help/ideas for tiles

My DS needs some coasters for his new apartment. I'm thinking of making some for him out of the those stone tiles.

I sent him a link to the "Thirsty Stone" coasters that looked like marble. He liked them, but not the fact that they were pictures applied to tiles. He LOVES the Connemara marble tile he got in Ireland, but they are expensive.

This tile was made with copics and got me thinking of using alcohol inks to create a faux marble look.

What do you think? A couple shades of green, black, gray sponged on a tile, maybe drag a feather through with the black. Any ideas or suggestions?

I used alcohol inks to "stain" some tiles on a fireplace and discovered that if the tile is glazed the inks do not dry, and rub right off. Surprisingly, if I wiped the tile with an acrylic sealer and added the inks before it was thoroughly dry, the two mediums bound together and worked beautifully! I would suggest getting a few extra tiles and playing around with them to see what works... I'd love to see pics when you've finished!

I would add a tiny touch of metallic (gold) to give it a real rich feeling.
Check out YouTube for faux marble or Tim Holtz instructions using Alcohol inks. There are some great examples.

I wrote an article for Somerset Studio back in 2002 about the marbling technique using alcohol inks. This was before Tim Holtz, that's how OLD I am lol! Anyway, I used a Krylon gold leafing pen in the article, but I wondered if gold was not realistic on a marble tile????

I'll try it, thanks! hmmm maybe copper leafing... I've got some of that too.
