Default mailing cards question...

So here are a few mailing questions...

If you have something a bit thicker (ribbon, etc) do you need more than one stamp?

If you use a clear envelope, do you need more than one stamp?

If you want something hand cancelled, can you just add 12 cents in postage or do you have to ask for it specifically at the post office? Can you add the postage at home and just write "hand cancel" on the envelope?

How much does it cost to mail the average card to Canada?

Thanks all you super smart ladies!

There's a similar thread going on here: Forums at Splitcoaststampers It seems to answer a lot of your questions. Of course, the PO would be the best resource to get the correct info.

I've never had a problem mailing a card with ribbon, so I would say no. I did however have a card with a twig attached and I had to have it hand canceled, and that was extra.

I would say yes, just because some postal place do not like the clear envies, because the ink come off, and it has to be hand canceled, and I've had to pay for the cards I've received.

That Im not sure, I know they have a stamp they put on there, so you might want to ask the postal people

Unsure.

For just ribbon, I would say no extra postage needed.

Clear envelope - don't think you'd need extra postage unless it's square. I've gotten cards in clear envelopes with my address written on a label so the writing doesn't come off.

Not sure about the hand stamp, but your idea sounds good about adding extra postage and writing hand stamp on it.

.60 to mail a one ounce letter/card to Canada. You can use regular US stamps. You can calculate postage to exact postal code if you have something heavier, at usps.com.

I'm not sure the weight of an average card with embellishments but here's how's the pricing works.
1oz = .60cents
2oz = .85cents
3oz = $1.10
4oz = $1.35
5oz = $1.60
lol now all you need is a postal scale!! I'm sure every stamper needs one in their back pocket!!!

I've been told by my postal clerk that if you have the extra 12 cents on your envelope, it won't go through the machine. I always take mine to the counter and watch them cancel it though--just to make sure ;)

I went to the post office just 2 days ago w/ 30 'thick' cards.

They have a 'tool' that the card has to fit through - thickness wise.
I would say that ribbon and 3D stuff wouldn't be a problem after seeing her try to slide my cards through.
That's for standard postage. If it's too thick or weighs too much is when you need more postage and then it won't go through the machine.
She told me my stuff would jam the machine. OH WELL! :p

not exactey what you asked but i thought i'd share. make sure you use self adhesive stamps on clear envies, the lick and stick will come off and get sent back to you. sometimes i need extra postage on my clears and sometimes not, depends on who is sorting mail. so i stick the extra .12 just so i don't have to deal with adding more postage 2 days later...
