Default My brayer vs Basic Black Ink - it my brayer ruined?!

I was so excited about using my brayer with my large background stamps - it's just SO easy to ink up the stamp with the brayer and apply the cardstock on top of the stamp, put a piece of paper on top, and rub.

So I inked up my brayer with Basic Black ink to make some BG's with French Script and By Definition. I cleaned the stamps off promptly with wipes, and they seem fine. Then I cleaned my brayer and it's still black, black, black! Will I ever be able to use my brayer with a light color of inkpad? Do I need to buy a new rubber roller for it?

I did try a little StazOn cleaner and that helped only a little. HELP!!

Thanks in advance,
Susan

I can't help you but that's good to know. I have a black Speedball brayer and have ordered with my Great Rewards the SU one. I will use the Speedball for black and the SU one for other colours.

Do you have an extra Yoyo Yellow classic pad? The rumour was that it cleaned the black stains off the stamps. Might work with the brayer.

My brayer is very very black from Joseph's coat.
Once it's stained....it's stained, but it doesn't "leech" color onto other ink pads unless you haven't cleaned it well enough. I clean my brayer by rolling it off on scrap paper, then running it over paper towel soaked with Windex...then rolling it off again on dry clean paper towel. If black still comes off, then I clean it again.

Next time I try it I'm gonna use an orange (organic) cleaner on it. The orange stuff got 8 year old stains out of our carpet (were there before we moved in) so I'm bettin' it takes the black off the brayer!!

Default Mine is dark too

My Speedball brayer is so stained that it looks navy blue and it works fine. The directions that came with it warned that it will stain but not to worry. Just test it on some scrap the next time you use a light colored ink just in case a little dark ink is left on the roller.

My Friskars roller has been used in the same dark colors and it doesn't stain. Must be a difference in the rubber.

I would wash it off with something other than just water before using light colors.

I have a big Black Elephant (from In the Wild) on my Speedball brayer from doing a miror image thing. I was not happy! My DH was like 'Wow, how'd you do that?' He thought it was neat! ha

I tried the YoYo Yellow in addition to other things and it is still there. (The YoYo DOES work on stamps, btw.)

But it doesn't leech off on anything else so I can still use it.

So I guess it is normal to have it stained. That's good to know at least.

Two things, the Stampin Up brayer *is* a speedball brayer. I have used the rollers interchangably between the two of them (the SU one actually says Speedball. I like the idea of a black roller to not have it stained. I personally have two rollers, one for dark colors and one for light colors, just to make me feel better. lol!

I had the same thing happen to my brayer when I was doing a Joseph's Coat technique, and it freaked me out. Even though the brayer is stained, that doesn't affect it's usage at all--it's just ugly.

I'm going to try Yoyo Yellow and see if that does anything for the stain.

I have a brayer that is really dark from Joseph's Coat technique, too! I hate how awful it looks so i saoked ti in hot water and oxyclean. It took some of the stain off and looks much better. It doesn't effect how the brayer works or how it performs but it looks better and that's what I like. Try it and see if it works for you!!

i posted the same question about a month and a half ago - i used my brayer in black ink, was not surprised when it was stained. I cleaned it up VERY good, multiple times. We are talking stamp cleaner, hot water, dish soap, etc. Thought it was plenty clean. NOT! The color did in fact bleed into the next (lighter) ink pad that I used. I finally had to resort to the dreaded alcohol and hot water. It is still stained, but does not bleed/leech.

I haven't tried it on a brayer but the Awesome Cleaner from the dollar store has taken stuff off my stamps that no other cleaner will...I use the one that says it is non toxic.

Well, I just tried the Yoyo Yellow trick, and it did appear to lift some of the stain off the brayer. I think it will take a lot of yellow ink, though, to really work on the stain, so I'm just not going to worry about it for now.

I'm wondering, lweller, if some of the products you used to clean your brayer (soap, etc.) might have left a residue that seeped into the stained color and caused it to bleed into your lighter colors. All I used to attempt to clean my brayer when I first stained it was water, and the stain hasn't bled into any of my other colors. I worried that it might mess up the yellow tonight, but it didn't. Just a thought.

I wonder if the cleaner for StazOn would work? It takes the basic black off my stamps perfectly......

Here's a link.

I went to the gallery and did a search for "Joseph's Coat"
http://gallery.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showgallery.php?mcats=all&si=Joseph's%20Coat&what=allfields&name=&when=&whenterm=

In a nutshell ~ ink up your background......I usually brayer a Kaleidocolor pad onto glossy paper (Glossy works best). Let it dry. Stamp your images with Versamark and emboss with clear Embossing Powder. Heat set. Brayer over with black. When dry, wipe embossed areas.

Looks so cool!!

Thank you! Thank you!! You saved me a ton of typing because my "SU" brayer is a Speedball brayer. I also have 2 rollers because of that.

You have to be very careful to not use WINDEX on or near your stamps or brayer. It will ruin both. You also have to watch baby wipes. YOu don't want to ruin your stamps.

You have to make sure they are alcohol and lanolin free. The oils in the lanolin can ruin your stamps and the alcohol can dry them out. Unless you are buying really expensive "all natural" ones (which you still have to watch out for because aloe is an oil too), they are probably ruining your stamps slowly but surely.

Have you gals tried using versa mark to clean your brayers? It works on my stamps- I have one pad I dedicate to cleaning stamps and one I use for embossing, etc. I stamp the stamp in it and then let it sit over night and then clean as usual. It works well for getting pigment ink off my stamps. Sometimes I have to repeat the process but most times once does the trick.
