i love the look of staples in card making and scrapbooking. i'm concerned, esp. with scrapbooking, that it will rust (i live in a humid environment) and ruin the pages. does anyone have any information on using staples? is there a specific kind of staple i should use? thanks so much! :o)
I've never used staples in my cards, but I'm sure you'd be okay - think about all of the things you have stapled at home already. I've never seen a rusty staple, but I don't live in a humid place.
I live in SW Washington state. I've seen rusty staples. Old paperwork stored in my garage has rusty staples. I haven't used stapes in my scrapbooks yet. I would, though. I just wouldn't put the staple *on* the picture. My scrapbooks are kept in a safer, less damp environment, so I think they would be better off.
Ok I agree with the no picture idea. I have never used them yet either but I think they are cute. I beleive I read here that metal things are scrapbook safe. Is this try or only some things? Because what about rusting paperclips????
I do genealogy, and everything I've ever read about keeping your research notes and other papers safe, the experts always say not to use staples, rubber bands, etc. to keep your originals together. Over time, they will rust. I have papers that I put together years ago when I first started (also were just my extra working notes - not my originals). I've kept them in my climate controlled house, and they still have the beginnings of rust. I love the look of staples, but I won't use them in my scrapbooks - on photos or the paper. If I'm taking the time to make a nice scrapbook for my kids, I'm going to try and use the safest products that I can. Staples may not rust right away, but I've never had any staples on paper that didn't over time begin to rust and leave marks on the paper.
I don't think I'd use regular buy them anywhere office supply staples. But here's what Making memories says about their staples:
"Making Memories Color Staples, available in an amazingly broad range of colors and metallic finishes, provide a quick and easy solution for "saying it with love in a little less time." Fits all standard staplers.
I would ditto the same for Safety Pins. I think the regular ones you'd buy any old where would rust over time. But the Making Memories ones sound pretty safe: http://www.makingmemories.com/produc...safetypins.cfm
Not to be a jerk but even though making memories says that the staples should be just fine I wouldn't necessarily buy into it I understand that they are laquered and are supposidly made of non-rusting compounds. But that still doesn't mean that they won't do things like dent page protectors. Yes, I know that's a small thing but it does make a big difference. I've scrapped a number of things that are rather 3-D and they do dent the other pages over time even when the book is stored upright. (and I'm talking about small stuff like eyelets as well) I just feel that no one can really know what something will do to a book over time because storage conditions will vary. With that said I personally would actually use the staples if I truely felt like it. Heck I doubt they are that much worse than eyelets. My personal goal for my scrapbooks is to have me and my family enjoy them. How long are they going to last really? After all not all of my photos are in black and white so they won't last that long anyway. Just my two-cents.
