I have a Lexmark X1150 which is a couple of years old that prints very well on cardstock. It cost about $50.
I think the main thing you need to look for in a printer for using cardstock, is one that has a top-loading feeder that just feeds the paper through at a slight angle and out the front. Not one that takes the paper inside and wraps it around a roller.

my current and last three printers have wrapped the paper and they printed just fine on cardstock, the last three were whatever came free with a computer, this one is HPC309g.
I just bought a Cannon Pixma MP560 for about $78 (US) from Amazon and it prints on heavy weight cardstock like a dream. It is an inkjet so the refills can be pricey but I LOVE it! HTH!
Ugh...I hate the Epson I bought. I thought I was getting such a good deal. Marked down from $150 to $49 and now I know why. It sucks up ink, does not print on vellum, won't print if the ink is low...all around not a good printer.
I have a Brother 420CN, which is several years old. It will print on cardstock about the weight of the Georgia Pacific white or SU Very Vanilla. It won't print on anything heavier than that though because the paper wraps around the back, and I think the turning radius is too tight for anything heavier.
I have an Epson TX100 that prints cardstock brilliantly. I got it free with a netbook I bought for my grandson last year. I registered with the company and got three months extra warranty. The colour cartridges are very reasonable and not expensive at all.
The secret with the Epson is to only put in one sheet at a time.
However, if you wanted to print larger than A4 sheets, then you are looking at a larger feed tray and therefore a much more expensive printer.
I've had a nicer more expensive Epson that had a paper tray with a manual feed option that took and printed very nicely on almost any weight CS. Loved it but it finally bit the dust.
The cheap Epson replacement printer (I didn't have the funds for a more expensive one at the time but really needed the printer) I really just want to throw out the window or off a cliff or something because it doesn't take cs worth diddly. I have to feed a single piece through several times before it will actually print...if it ever prints...I'm on the hunt for another replacement.....

Bead, if you are stuck with it till you get a new one, push down lightly on the CS as it is due to print. I find I have to do that with thicker CS. I use CS from SU in my printer - only because it was all I had at the time.
My two Brothers -- work well. My Laser HJ-1440 is old but a gem. I do have to single feed cardstock but it works well. I use it for the inserts for my cards. I do all my inside greetings on the computer so am using basic white or vanilla cardstock most of the time. My color inkjet is MFC685 and it will handle multiple sheets of white or vanilla cardstock. I use it when I want to use color rather than black ink to coordinate with the card base for my greetings. Again both printers are over two years old but neither cost over $150. The laser toner cartridges are around $80 but I haven't replaced one for over a year. The color printer takes individual color cartridges (magenta, yellow, cyan and black) but cost about $12/each and rarely do I have to replace them all at one.
Unfortunately, ink is the most expensive part of printing. The Lexmark we used to have was a pig for using ink. I also have an old HP all-in-one. Although it is the best of all the printers in the house, and the oldeest, I can no longer get the print heads for it. A $900 printer but alll the HP people can tell me is "it is very old, you know, and we just don't make parts for it anymore. You will have to buy a new one." The HP printers are champs but their customer service stinks! Just went through a computer death on my HP laptop and customer service on that was loussy too. I won't ever buy another HP product.
I have the Canon MP560 and, so far, it is performing quite nicely. It has a rear feed tray that I can feed cardstock through and I use some heavy cardstock (Cougar 130#) and haven't had any problems. My only complaint is that I need to fiddle with the settings to get more vibrant colour prints on plain cardstock. Printing photographs is a breeze and they come out beautiful on both glossy and matte finish photo papers. I print a lot of digi stamps as well and haven't had any issues with my inks smearing for colouring with pencil crayons & oms or copics. I haven't tried watercolouring yet with the inks, but more than likely, I would have to use a sealer to watercolour. I almost forgot to add, the printer was under $100. The ink cartridges are a little more pricey than the average ones (about $20 for the photo black & about $16 for the colour & regular black cartridges - all CDN$). The printer uses 5 ink cartridges (2 black & 3 colours)

I have one of these as well and LOVE it.
I went through the grewling task of deciding which printer to buy a few months ago.
Key: Read, read, read reviews on each printer. The decision was vey easy once I started reading the reviews.
HP's customer service stinks because they don't support an old model? How do you feel about Micro$oft not supporting older versions of Windows? Customer service stinks there, too? How about that '57 Chevy in the neighbor's garage, the one he brings out only on sunny Sundays? Chevy's customer service stinks because they no longer build parts for that?
Wow--- I wanted to bite my tongue, but just couldn't. Why bother posting to this thread if you have nothing positive to contribute to the OP's question? Taking negative snipes at people's comments is uncalled for.
I realize by posting this, I have done the same thing, and I apologize to all of the others that have posted their contributions. I, by no means, meant to hijack the thread. I just can't stand rudeness, especially unwarranted.
Personally I want to know if a company won't stand behind their products. Technology can be outdated as soon as you bring it home, and I'd like to know if something goes wrong, I'll be able to fix it.
Wow thanx everyone you have been very helpful....I went out today and bought a Hp wireless model F4580 for around the $90 mark and it takes card yippee.. xx jo xx
