March 14 is Natonal Pi day....
My son has a good friend who is a math major. It turns out that March 14 is National Pi day. Pi, Greek letter (http://www.piday.org/images/littlepi.gif), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. (not something I knew, copied it from a website)
Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535 Of course, what do they celebrate with? PIE! Anyway I would like to make a really cool card to send him but am hitting a creative wall. Anyone have any ideas you can suggest? TIA! Kim |
You could draw or stamp an igloo and little penguins or something for this:
In Alaska, where it gets very cold, pi is only 3.00. As you know, everything shrinks in the cold. They call it Eskimo pi. :p:razz::lol: |
When my youngest was in high school, they celebrated by bringing in a whole pie for the class to share! Hers got first place! (Small high school, small class size, I might add).

I actually made one back in 2007!

Besides the pie idea, you could pick images with pi in them. Example PIrate.
Love your card Sophie. |
Thanks Kilroy! I had fun making it!

My niece makes pies for school for that day. I have made a card using a pie stamp and used my computer for the sentiment. I have a stamp of a slice of pie and put that on little hand held pies from the store and it was cute and well received as well.

It's a cool thing for the math geeks. My kids high school always celebrated it and sold T-shirts with an appropriate theme. I even see some of them around our local university.
I bet you never heard of Precalentines Day: Precalentines Day Precalentines Day is an unofficial math holiday that was developed in 2004 by a Pre-Calculus class at J.L. Ilsley High School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It takes place on the December 14 of every year. It was made as a holiday so that people can celebrate their love of mathematics, and the traditions for it are always evolving: for example, for Pre-Calculus classes that celebrate it, goodies are always brought in and shared by students. These cookies, additionally, could be and are usually iced with functions or formulae. Precalentines (math valentines = math pick up lines) are distributed among students also are another popular tradition, in addition to the composition and reading of limericks and haikus which are shared and voted on. Finally, another tradition includes eatting snacks that are named after mathematicians (such as Fig Newtons or Choco Leibnizs, even though it is understood that Fig Newtons aren't actually named after Isaac Newton). The holiday's influence is slowly growing and being recognized in schools around Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in universities around Canada. |
You're welcome Sophie!!
And Leslie, that is very cool. |
Precalentines Day!!! I love it! Those are SUCH cool ways of celebrating math!

Thank you so much everyone for the good ideas! I barely know my multiplication tables but I am so excited for Pi day! I love all the ideas! Anyone who can graduate with almost a 4.0 in math deserves all the pie he can eat!

I was inspired by this thread to make another Pi Day card this year:
