What is clear ink?

In an article in a magazine (can't remember which one) it said to stamp with clear ink and then dry emboss. What is clear ink? It also talks about applying clear ink over a stencil and rubbbing with chalk. I have a feeling that this is something I should know I'm not getting it.

Versamark by Tsukineko is a clear ink. When stamped onto card stock, it will leave an impression that is slightly darker than the paper color.

If you sponge this ink over a stencil, then remove the stencil, and apply chalks (rubbed over the ink with a sponge dauber or similar applicator tool), the chalk will actually stick to the ink. This technique was originally known as "chalk resist" when first introduced to the stamping world.

It is now more commonly referred to as "Poppin' Pastels".

Perhaps they didn't want to be "brand specific" in the article; there are a number of clear inks including Versamark, Clear Resist by Ranger, and Clear Top Boss by Clearsnap.

Altho I've never read the article, I agree it would have been helpful for readers if they had indicated a list of specific inks to alleviate any confusion.
