Journal Jars
 

What size mason jars should I use for journal jars? I have some pint size ones and they look too small, but maybe they are the right size. I haven't printed out all the slips yet, so I don't know how much space they'll take up. For Christmas I'm making 3 of these for my nieces, along with decorated journals, beaded pens and a bookmark.

OOOOhhhhhh! :D Journal jars are....

You can write or print out questions like...What was your favorite Christmas tradition when you were growing up?, Who was your favorite teacher in school? Favorite subject? etc.

Then you give the pretty decorated jar to a loved one with a journal you can make yourself or a store bought one. A pretty pen or pencil is a plus.

The person then takes a slip out whenever they are in the mood and write about that question.


These are a great way to get family histories and stories. Also great for those who have journaling block in your scrapbooks.

There are a ton of sites online that can help you with questions and such. I have even seen one where you put quotes and sayings together to work from.

That is a great idea! I made a journal for my 9 year old DSIL, now perhaps I am thinking to add a journal jar along with it. I know you can make up your own questions, but are there lists already made up with a bunch of questions you can choose from?

I have posted this before but this seems like another good place to put it, I cut these journal prompts up and put them in an envelope and add to each journal I make, I have also put them in pint sized jars or 1/2 pint jars for journal jars.

I have one for the summer - its called the "boredom Jar"

If I hear my kids say theyare bored more than once during the day they ahve to pick a slip form the jar and DO that activity..... they run the risk....

My jar has Chores, Homework assignments, crafts, outside exploring activities, 10 minutes of reading....

They have to pick and what ever it says they MUST DO.

Now the onus is on my that sometimes I ahve to drop what I am doing to set up an activity or monitor a craft but its worth not having the whining etc.

My son pulled from it three times in the first week we used it - all THREE were either cleaning, homework, or a writing exercise!!!!

(I didn't tell him that I had stacked the jar!!!) He was all too careful for the remainder of the summer to say "i'm bored" Cause he KNOWS I"ll find him something to do - and since he picked the slip from the jar - there is NO ROOM for COMPLAINING!

As he gets older and writing improves I may switch the the journal jar! I ever thought about doing one for me! hmmmm.....!!!!

Oh my goodness! What a great link! I LOVE the journal jar prompts for kids. I have several kids on my list who will be getting these for Christmas. What a fun way to practice writing! Can you tell I'm a teacher? :) Now, about the journal...I've never made one before and am very intimidated by them. Anyone have EASY directions even a novice like me can follow? Thanks for your help.

I'm going to wrap some paper around the middle and then decorate with layers to coordinate with the journal I'll also be decorating. I'll also print my own label that I can stick on the lid. I'm not to crazy about theirs. I ended up getting a quart size, and I'll also stick a glue stick in the jar so that they can glue their prompts into the journal.

i love the idea for the boredom jar, i'll have to try it.

Great site! I have not heard much about journal jars except for I am grateful jars that you fill out every year around the holidays and write so many thing you were grateful for that year! :)

Anyone have a picture of a journal jar decorated SU?

I didn't care for the look of their labels either. I ended up typing up all the questions, and will be printing them out on my own paper, and putting a small stamp next to each one. I thought about doing the gluestick too. I think it's a great idea.

I'm planning to print them out on address labels; that way they can stick the prompt at the top of the page.

This sounds like something fun to make, thanks for sharing it! I didn't know anything about these until I saw this post. I want to make one for someone now! LOL I just have to figure out who would appreciate it the most. :D

From Organized Christmas, it looks like they use quart sized jars. If you click on the link above, select 'Gifts in a Jar' from the list on the left, then Journal Jars (adult). It gives a brief description including the jar size.

Use Label Paper for Journal Jars
 

Hi,
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I did the journal jar for 2 family members and myself. Instead of having to glue or tape the entry onto the journal page, I reconfigured the journal entries so Icould fit 6 journal entry "pages" per 1 page of whole-sheet label paper. This way, you just pick an entry and peel-and-stick it. If anyone wants my files, I can send them, but they're in Picture It! format, so keep that in mind. I might be able to convert but am not sure. Oh, and to got so many to fit on the page, I removed the cute little graphics. PM me if you want the files.

Another thing I did with the journal entries, I put them in a zip-loc bag since this uses less space than the jar (not as cute and negates the whole "journal jar" title, but convenient nonetheless!).

These sound great, I like the idea of a jar with things to do in. I hardly ever get time to stamp, but when I do I often sit there and think "what shall I make" so if I made a jar with stamping ideas and projects in I could pull one out and stamp away. Great gift ideas for stamping friends as well! I am not sure what jars you are referring to asI am in UK but I am sure most jars can be adapted.

Great idea to give the jars as gifts to stamping friends. I think I'm going to do that. Fill it with stamping and scrapbooking things to do. That will be fun.
