I went unmounted and 90% of my stamp purchases are still SU because I like their designs the best. It doesn't bother me that part of the cost of the stamp set is the wood - now, don't get me wrong, I would love for them to offer the option of buying their stamps at a cheaper, unmounted price but that doesn't slow me down from purchasing just about everything in the catty!
I have an old SU catalog where all stamp sets had two prices, one for mounted and one for unmounted. I am sad that they didn't continue with that option. I do like using the wood mounted stamps, but I would rather be able to buy two unmounted sets for the same price as one with the the wood blocks. Since the stamps do not come assembled anyway, it seems like it would be easy to offer the choice. However, I love a lot of their sets, so I just have to suck it up and pay the higher price!

They were not mounted and unmounted. They were wood mounted and foam mounted. A very different thing.
see that would be a wonderful option of foam mounted stamps...since that's how I use them anyway...I hate wasting all this wood that I paid for ya know??
Yep, Sharon's right. The foam were terrible!! My first set was a foam set. It's not what you are thinking. They were very hard to use and you ALWAYS caught the corner.
I agree that foam mounting isn't good...though I do have newer stamps from MM and CI and such that *are* foam mounted and aren't that bad...as long as you don't mind staining that is *g*

Well, all I saw was one set was cheap and one was not! :-D I have bought foam mounted sets and yes, they are crummy. However, once you peel the stamp off the foam and trim it closely to the image, they work fine as unmounted stamps. Since SU doesn't even put the stamps together before sending them, I just wish that you could buy the rubber and cushion part for less, if you don't care about having the wood or not. I'm sure they have their reasons, but it is frustrating when you see that the stamp set is not put together before being sent out to customers anyway, and it would seemingly be easy to offer that option.
However, I have accepted that they are not going to do that, and the many stamps sets I do buy from SU, I wood mount just because I figure I paid for it, might as well use it!
I can't even imagine using UM, but then again, I've never tried. One thing I can't wrap my head around is - how would you use the Stampamajig on any non square stamp? Either way, 100+ sets in, all SU, I barely have had time to mount everything I've gotten, much less go back and unmount now.
Oh! But my opinion is...you should demonstrate what you're selling. I think anything else is misleading.

Before I was a SU demo, I unmounted all my stamps. Then I decided to become a demo and so I remounted all of the current SU sets that I had. I left the retired sets unmounted and as soon as any of my current sets retire, I'll probably unmount them again.
