If it ain't broke don't fix it !

All of my things had a place , but like items were not always together. However I knew exactly where to find anything.
Then I decided I should re-organize so all like items would be together. That meant putting things in different drawers or boxes, etc.
It took an entire day last week

Tonight I just spent nearly an hour hunting for something, because I couldn't remember where I thought would be a brilliant place to store it

It doesn't pay to re-organize if you have a place for everything and can find it .

RubberLady603 10-09-2011 01:26 AM

Oh sigh....I can so relate to this! I did the same thing, can't find anything! The worse part is I now think I need to start all over with the organizing!

AZstampcrazy 10-09-2011 01:45 AM

I didn't reorganize but moved and everything is in a different spot so now I have the same problem. :(

shazsilverwolf 10-09-2011 02:12 AM

I so know what you mean! I have a habit of putting stuff in a 'safe' place, where 'I will be able to find it'-what that really means of course, is that it vanishes into some sort of crafty black hole, lol.

minstrel 10-09-2011 02:58 AM

I'm right there with you ::: sigh::: I just went and bought another embossing tool yesterday because I the one I already own "somewhere safe". Oy!

craftygirl04 10-09-2011 04:18 AM

I do this all the time...you'd think I'd learn. Although, having said that, I think I've got organizing down to an art now...I can actually find the things I need. Perhaps I will keep my room as is because it seems to work.

shazsilverwolf 10-09-2011 05:03 AM

On the same subject, do you find that if you go looking for something, you don't find what you are looking for, but you DO find the thing you were hunting for last time? Happens to me every time,:p

I usually find the thing I was looking for last week when I finally give up on EVER finding it and go buy a new one. As I'm putting the new one away, the missing one magically appears.

Barbara Jay 10-09-2011 06:45 AM

I keep my Distress inks in a Iris card box that sites on top of one of my Iris drawer carts

I have 3 Ranger Blending tools which I "formerly" kept in a photo box along with my hot knife, spare exacto blades and several other things.

After hunting for them through nearly every drawer and box with no success, I sat down to have a cup of coffee and contemplate this dilemma . I looked up and saw the card box with the Distress inks and YUP the Blending tools were also in the box with the ink pads ---sigh !

My most recent reorganization included getting Quickutz magnetic folders for Nestabilities and other dies. But I also got a label maker for the spines!!! I love it :) !

I also reorganized my drawers so I could reclaim the floor on the other side of the closet, and labeled all of the drawers, too. Now I'm hoping I can keep things like this for a good long while.

If you have boxes with lots of stuff and labeling is impractical, you could make a little notebook of what's where for those times when you look several places and still can't find what you need. It make take awhile but save you time in the long run!

The finding problem I'll never solve I think is when working on something. . . you just have what you need in your hand and set it down. . . and *poof*!! Where'd it go?!?! LOL!

Yup, that's me! The worst part is that often it "hides in plain sight"--and I can "look" at it without seeing it there. Maybe we could figure out how it uses its cloak of invisibility and make millions of dollars... (LOL)

I would never have believed my paper cutter could do this, but it does. And cling mount stamps I can chase all day on my desktop!

ttemby 10-09-2011 08:49 AM

I put my nesties in a "safe" place about 6 months ago. I didn't want to loose them. Well, can't find them. Ready to go to a scrapbook convention in November. Really don't want to buy them again just to find them soon after! Ugh!

felixdog 10-09-2011 09:07 AM

My solution to this is to call in my husband. I don't know how but he always seems to find what I'm looking for. He's found things in the kitchen cupboards and refrigerator too (stamping stuff!!).

buggainok 10-09-2011 09:13 AM

Love this thread! I can relate to everything said. Whatever part of my poor brain is supposed to remember things is so slow to "reboot" or "update", lol.

We've lived in our "new" house now for about 15 years, and I still have vivid memories of just where I kept something in the old house. It just doesn't help much that I remember it was on the shelf in the linen closet where we used to live.

PaperManipulator 10-09-2011 09:35 AM

How funny, Bugga. I was just thinking the same thing! We've been in our present house for five years, and when we can't find something we say "I know where it was in our other house."

This weekend I was gearing up to "reorganize" everything and thinking through how I wanted to do it. Now that I see this, I'm thinking - keep things where they are...LOL

This is me too! Especially that crafty black hole. I expect when we move from this house all sorts of craft items will magically appear from their hiding places.

muscrat 10-09-2011 02:30 PM

Thank YOU! I thought I was the only one who would like right at something and not see it!!! Yes! I am sane, I am sane, I am....;)

kphorse 10-09-2011 05:15 PM

I have everything in my rubber room organized, I know right where it is at all times! But, I have 3 pairs of glasses in there and I can never find one of them!

I got new glasses last month and have already lost one of the new pairs! They are all in Rubber Room somewhere?

sewflake 10-09-2011 05:56 PM

Has anyone seems my paper hole punch??? It is in a safe place just waiting for the need to use it. The need is now! LOL

I think I will join kphorse in the rubber room..........

stormlady66 10-09-2011 06:05 PM

Just spent the weekend sorting and indexing my stamps for the umpteenth time. But in the process I got rid of several I don't use and that's a good thing. I couldn't tell you how many times I've organized my craft room. I always think there is a better way but in the process I "put something away" and never find it again. Right now it's my scrubbing pad to clean my stamps. I know it's somewhere!!

raquelita_uno 10-09-2011 07:03 PM

Swimming in a sea of stamps and can't fine a single one!

My new stamping closet is nearly complete and I have all my boxes of wood mount stamps just thrown in on the shelves. Set by set I'm unmounting the stamps but trying to work on projects in the mean time. I know exactly what stamp I want (specifically the sentiments) but have to search through all the boxes to find them.....I, too, knew exactly where they were in my old house!

I do the same thing-- sort of. If I can't find it, my computer is acting wonky, the dog won't stop barking... doesn't matter WHAT it is... all I have to do is ask him to help and the minute he stands up, I find it, computer settles down, dog curls up and goes to sleep, burned food unburns... ok, maybe not that, but still!!!

I have (shh, don't tell him) even been known to call him before I even look much because I know it'll save time.
