I would like to sell a bunch of my old SU sets. I've only made purchases on Ebay, never sold anything. Is it worth my time to figure that out and pay the fees on Ebay or should I use the B/S/T forum here? I'm willing to spend the time it takes to get a fair price for these stamps.
I would try the BST boards here as well. I have never had luck with selling on ebay. I did have luck selling lots of stuff on www.craigslist.com. Good luck.

I think you should try selling here on SCS through B/S/T forum. If you don't get any bites then go to Ebay.
Thanks ladies! I'll try listing them here first then. Now I just have to finish sorting through and deciding what I want to part with. My wish list for the new TAC catalog just keeps growing, this seems like a good way to pay for it without killing my budget!

Ebay can be kind of expensive. I'd start with the Buy/Sell board here and then if they don't sell, you might try ebay.

I've been selling on ebay for years and never thought it was expensive at all! I think it's a great resource, and it is totally user friendly.
My general process is to list all of the stamps I want to sell and then also list the price I'd like to get next to them. From there I go to Ebay and do a search for each set and look at the completed auctions. If the average sell price is equal to or more than what I was expecting to get, I sell the set(s) on ebay. If the average sell price is way less than what I'd like to get, I list it in B/S/T. Needless to say, I've had very few B/S/T listings!
If you decide to go the ebay route and need any help, please let me know. I've taught classes on the subject (selling on ebay) at the local community college and would be happy to lend a hand if possible!
Selling on eBay is easy, especially if you use Turbo Lister, which you can download for free. I've had very few stamp sets sell here on the B/S/T, but have had good success on eBay. There are fees associated with eBay, but I don't feel that they are unreasonable.

Thanks for the offer of help, Sarah! I may just take you up on this. I've got a box of at least 30 sets that I need to list, but I've been avoiding it because I'm not familiar with the selling process on E-bay. (Now the *buying* process....I've got that one down pat! )
Thanks Sarah! What is really holding me back from selling on ebay is figuring out the shipping costs and what to package the sets in--flat rate envelope or box or something else.

Shipping is a lot easier now than it used to be on eBay. What I do is pick up some Priority Mail boxes (or have them shipped to you). You can figure out what box it'll fit in and how much it weighs. You put that info into the listing and eBay will calculate the shipping for the buyer. You can also put it in your setting to charge a handling fee if you prefer. It walks you right through the steps.

Okay, so I think I'll take the plunge and try to sell my sets on eBay. One more question--does anyone have advice on the best length of auction or day to start/end the auction?

The longer the auction, the more people will see it and therefore bid on it (hopefully!). I make all of my auctions either 5 or 7 days. There is an option for 10 days, but you pay extra for it, and it's just not worth it to me. My general thought has always been to make as much while spending as little as possible. Ebay reports that their heaviest traffic is on Sunday night. I end all of my auctions on a Sat or Sun night - Ebay recommends ending on a Sunday night for best exposure.
Shipping is super easy. The priority mail is the best way to go, and the boxes are free. You will have to enter the weight of your item, but the site has a little help feature near that area that gives you approximate comparisons (something like a can is roughly equal to one pound, etc.) to help you out.
Always offer insurance. If the buyer doesn't choose it and the item is damaged, they can't come back on your for never offering it. I learned that one the hard way.
I also highly recommend setting up a paypal acct if you do not have one. That will offer protection for both the buyer and the seller.
Also think about your starting price. The higher you make your starting price, the higher your listing fee will be. I usually start all of my auctions really low - either $0.99 or $1.99 to minimize listing fees. But the down side of that is you might get a lower ending price, but I really feel it makes your auction more attractive to bidders if the starting price is lower, and it saves you a little $ in the long run. This is also why I check prices of completed auctions to make sure the ending prices are averaging what I'd like to get as well.
Sarah--I just came back from reading your blog. Henry is so cute!
I do have a PayPal account, but it is just the standard with an approved checking account. Do I need to upgrade to the Premier account to accept payments?

I don't think so... I'm not sure what the difference is. I set my account up years ago (when the site was new), so I'm not really familiar with the different types. I have a checking account and a cc on mine. I would think yours would be fine the way it is for the volume you're doing...
And thanks for the compliments on my baby (who is less and less of a baby every day - boo hoo!)! I love him to pieces!
