Default How To Start My Smash Journal

Before Christmas I purchased a Smash Journal from my local scrapbook store. It still sits in the bag with some supplies too. I have no idea where to start. Please help me get over my habit of procrastinating projects.

I welcome all suggestions!

What makes it fun for me is that I have no plan. I just open up to any old page and stick stuff in. For example, I have a 2 page spread from my last retreat and just stuck in some pictures and memento type things. I have some cards that I received from overseas friends on some more. I cut out the foreign postage and stuck them randomly about too. I love it because it is random and fun to look through. I'm usually a "just so" person so for me it's very freeing and I just love it. I say, dig that baby out and just start sticking stuff in! You can journal or not, stamp or not, or whatever you feel like.

I tore into my smash book when I bought it, kinda of using it as a journal to jot down ideas and musings and playing around with supplies. I made a point of doing it every Tuesday and it was fun. Then the holidays hit and I don't think I even know where my half-finished smash book is right now. That would be a good project for next Tuesday, huh. Maybe you could pull out a favorite photo, paper, embellishment or momento and start a page from there. Have fun!

I started by emptying the shoebox I used to keep all the little things I didn't want to throw away... My train tickets and boarding passes I got when I went to Denmark, receipts from trips and stuff like that... Then everything after that is coming easy. Christmas cards, cut outs from Christmas cards, etc. I bought my daughter one right after she gave birth to put all the baby's stuff in and jot little notes about life with the baby in. For mine there's no rhyme or reason for where it goes, I just open a random page, slap the item in and write myself a note. As I'm doing this I pretend I'm writing to someone who doesn't know me so that helps me determine how many details I need to write.

Have fun with it and imagine how cool it would be to find something like this that belonged to your grandparents, just as I am when I'm telling my life story without having to scrap the lengthy, expensive traditional way!

Here is a link to a You-tube video. Now at Two Peas: Smash by K & Company (Two Peas in a Bucket) - YouTube

You could easily make your own but since I never seemed to get around to doing it, I was very happy to buy one to get started.

I'm going shopping today with my bff and planned to go to Michael's and Hobby Lobby and was hoping they had smash books. I just watched the link to 2 peas that featured smash books and now I know I want the doodle style but all the little extras are so going home if they have them. Keeping my fingers crossed!

My Granddaughters - 12 and 16, love their smash books!!
And, my 9 yr old Grandson LOVES his book. His sister is 5 and she's aching to have one...but she goes from one project to another. I'll wait another year.

I love mine too. It takes the pressure off of scrapbooking. Just stick in anything that catches your eye! Started when my first granddaughter was born and it is soooo much fun. I wish they would come out with one with blank pages and we could add our own papers. I am probably not going to make my own as they are so cheap with a coupon! Just jump in and enjoy. Can't go wrong.

My Grandmother and I would have simply loved the Smash Book had they been around way back then! Instead we just made scrapbooks with paste and scissors and magazines and mail order catalogs. Sure had fun with those, but I think it was mostly because I was spending time with my Grandma! She would have loved this card-making craft the way it is now! Smash books would have been her thing! She would have bought one for every one of her grandkids!

Yes, Michael's did!!! I went to Hobby Lobby first to get a set of nesties and they didn't know what "smash" books were. I walked into M's and there in the front of the store on an end-cap was a whole display of SMASH!!!!! They didn't have a coupon this week and I didn't care I got the doodle style, the date stamper, and a little vacation tear off pad.

These are just so "me". I'll start with page one and just begin adding things I do with my husband, daughters, friends, etc. I like how they don't take much time, you can still be creative, and you'll have something fun to keep memories in. I'm going to Key West the end of Feb. and it will be so fun to "SMASH" my mementos

I've made my own from DCWV papers. I love to mix from different stacks and I mix in plain paper and even some water color papers. I have a niece who is home schooling - I made her and 4 of her children each one and she is having them use them for yearbooks. I visited over Christmas and they were all so excited to show them to me and I loved seeing how they were being used!

K&Company is amazing and it's on my list for weekend shopping. I have also gone to a thrift shop and purchased a children's board book. Coat the pages with a little gesso and it makes a great beginning to endless creativity. Some of the books even have super cute cut outs or flaps to open and close. The sky is the limit!

I couldn't bring myself to pay the $$$ for a book, but grabbed a pen and some tags and started using a blank journal today. I've put a bug in my hubby's ear about SMASH stuff for my bday in May....we'll see what happens with that!

My mom bought me a bunch from archivers-I had no clue what to do with them until we saw one a teenager had put together at a scrap night. I am making one for my engagement through wedding. I put photos of where he proposed, notes, dates, ribbon of my wedding colors-even the tux and dress shopping photos.
I love the deconstructed idea of it! I do not have the patience or time or creativity to make a big fancy scrapbook of the wedding.
Brilliant idea! I just wish the glue was better for pics

I am hoping to get my hands on some of the new smash stuff too!!

I think I will probably be making my own book though.

Can't wait to get started.

For those of you on facebook....there's a newer smash group there now. Lots of great ideas and pages to see.

Enjoy!!
