Default How often to you purchase from "rival" companies?

If you're a demo for a stamping/scrapbooking company, how often do you buy from "rival" companies? And I don't mean just stopping by the craft store and seeing afew things you like.

I'm an SU! demo. But about twice a year I go to a Creative Memories unit leader's home for a workshop to stock up on any new products that I'd like (luckily that only means spending $50-100, whereas with SU! it would probably mean $1000!).
I'm always very careful not to bring any stamps with me, but often people see my album pages (if I bring one) and start asking questions. I answer as simply and politely as possible, because I don't want to "steal" her customers (unless they're really interested of course!).
How do you handle yourself in these situations? Or are you totally "loyal" to the company you demo for? Do you even bring business cards just in case?

Well, I just became a TAC Demo and I still love my SU sets that I have and couple more that I am going to get.

I have stamps from every company I can think of except CTMH? If I like it I buy it. These is for my own personal use.

Art is that, not necessarily TAC art or SU art, byt the art of rubber stamping. As a TAC rep. I will still use prismacolor pencils and Gamsol, i just won't sell them. The same goes for the SU Demo's I know that have TAC or CTMH products for their own use!

I see nothing wrong with this.

Just my 2 cents worth!

As much as I love CTMH I buy everything I love. I enjoy everything from cute to super artsy and no one company sells everything to keep me happy

it sounds like you handle it just right... very respectful of her CM customers and her business but if they ask ( I don't know a stamper that only uses one company)... then by all means share!

Aren't you one of Patti's twins?? LOL!!

I too am a TAC Angel. I have more SU stamps then I care to count...I also have stamps from CTMH, Inky Antics and Cornish Heritage Farms, among many others.

I am an equal opportunity stamper, and will continue to buy what I like even though I signed on the dotted line with TAC. I went to a SU workshop last Friday and purchased from the summer mini...I have another SU workshop this evening at my demo's home, and have a couple things I will buy fro the new catty. But if I can buy it from TAC, even if the stamp set is only vaguely similar, then I will buy from me.

Psst - Karen . . .

TAC carries the Prismacolor pencils. So you could still demo with those . . .

I love my SU demo!! We are getting ready to start another one of her monthly Stamping groups, (was in 2 of them )! She is the one that showed me a TAC catalog. The gals in the group know I signed on as "hobby" demo for TAC and if they want to order they know how to contact me. I don't bring up TAC at our stampers 10 (at least not intentionally ). I do offer them a discount but most are pretty loyal to SU and that is fine with me. I also have CM and CTMH demo's whom I order from at least 2x year. I had thought about asking my "other" Demo's if they would be interested in swapping discounts to help each other meet our "quotas" (although I have no trouble meeting mine on my own ). I am just a "hobby" demo and they are "business" demo's, so I didn't feel right asking. BUT that will not stop me from ordering from them. I agree with kphorse, I am a equal opportunity stamper, but if TAC has something similar I will buy it from ME too.

I don't see any problem with ordering from a variety of companies and I do order/buy.

Sometimes SU or TAC has a stamp set that fits an activity or scrap page better then CTMH so I get it! Why not? Its my books, cards etc. I personally love the variety that all the stamp companies offer!

I don't have a problem buying "other" stamps than SU. Notice I said "buy," lol, not necessarily use! I love lots of other stamps, and I have hundreds from before becoming an SU demo. I just find myself using SU primarily when I stamp because I don't have enough time to do all the stamping I want.

I would like to say, though, that I do not take my business cards to another demo's function. If somebody really wanted to talk to me because they knew I was a demo, I'd probably just give them my phone number and say we could discuss it later. I just don't like the idea of even seeming to troll someone else's party like that.

I used to demo for SU and for a short time with CTMH. (now with neither). I used to go to CM crops every month and was very discrete; most of my scrapbooking stuff was CM so I had my "CM bag" becuase I felt it important to be polite to my CMC who was very nice and I valued her. I never brought business cards and would totally downplay my association by changing the subject because I didn't want to take any business from her those nights. I continued purchasing from her because there were a lot of things I still enjoyed with CM regardless of my associations at either time with SU or CTMH.

I hated being in the position and to be honest when I was representing the companies I didn't go as often to her crops. Now that I am "solo" I have been going every month and enjoying not having to worry about it.

Well many of you all know that I am a TAC demo.
But I do buy from other Stamp companies. Such as SU and CTMH.
First off I am a S-T-A-M-P-E-R If I like it use it.
I try to purchase as much as I can. And money will allow me too.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I buy almost exclusively from SU. Now and then from LSS, but not from "rivals" (as you called them). Not saying there's anything wrong with it, just that SU usually supplies me with me "needs".

Always lol
I am a demo for CTMH but it was a hard decision to make between them and SU, CTMH was giving out 3 extra free stams in June and the kit was cheeper so I went with them, I still spen just as much with SU my sis is thinking about becoming a SU demo and we will share the discount and demo only purchase items.
Here's my reasoning, All companies are different, there are no two companies that are totaly alike each one sells different items and are great in there own way. Even though CTMH and SU are rivals I really don't see what the fuss is about both have wonderful products and both companies products work so well together. As for the stamps both companies designs are totaly different, granted some are simmular but still different enough to make a person want it all lol If I can't find a design I want from one company I usually can find it from the other. The only problem I have with CTMH stamps is if I get some in and they are to stick a rub with a pencil eraser takes care of that and a good wash with dish soap restores the sticky. The problem with SU is I have to trim and mount the stamps, I hate doing this, when my sis is here and I have some new ones in she usually does it for me
I love the acrylic stamps for some items and I think CTMH has the best acrylic, I also love the accessories and colors, well lets just say the whole catty! If I could I would buy everything in the CTMH and SU catties!
SU also has the confetti white card stock and I just wish that they sold it in bigger packs! I love to use it as a base for my cards, hopefully my order will come in soon I'm all out of it! The woodie stamps and wheels, LOVE THEM!
Creative Memories has some awesome tools and storage stuff, I lvoe the journaling boxes & matting sets as well as the fine tip pens. I've also purchased some of the stickers but I prefer to stamp and make my own with the zyron but they are great in a pinch.

I am a hobby SU! demo....so I need to only buy from myself until I win the lotto. LOL! Actually I really enjoy being able to order from myself at 1 am in the morning ....I don't think the CM friend would like having me call her when I figure out what I need for a layout at that time. I really think that every company has items that I would really LOVE to have....just don't have the extra cash for it right now.

I have learned that I don't use what I cannot demo so I have stopped spending my money on things that don't get touched. I have a tub of stamps from Michaels from my pre-demo days that, while I used them at the time and they are cute, I don't find myself reaching for them anymore. I also don't use my SU! stamps once they retire. I'll admit I've only looked at a few other stamping companies images in passing (usually when clicking links on SCS) but since I know myself enough to know I won't use it, I don't pay much attention. There are absolutely adorable sets out there but they don't inspire me to buy. Its the *one* area I'm able to resist hoarding LOL!!

That said, I really need to get on the ball to SELL the stamps I have that I don't use so they can go to a good home and get some lovin'!

I'm a TAC demo, but one of my closest friend is an SU demo. When we do classes we often help each other's business, lol! We're both hobbyists. I have always loved the 48 colors, and SU has some phenomenal accessories. At this point I'll only buy stamp sets from SU that are really unique. An Archiver's opened near us a few months ago. 'Nuf said?

Couldn't agree more! I like how someone said in an above post that monogamy is for marriage, not stamping!!

I like a little variety...isn't that the spice of life! Buy what you like and explain it later!

I'm a TAC demo but I have stamps from MANY different companies and I have customers who are demos for other companies. In fact, I just went to an SU stamp camp last weekend. I always said I wouldn't demo for anyone because I didn't want to be married to a company but I don't feel that way with TAC. I buy what I like and I use what I want when stamping personal stuff. I use TAC stuff for workshops and demo cards but I think my customer's appreciate that "I'm an equal opportunity stamper"

I am an SU demo too and I buy anything I like. I am planning on placing my first ever order with CTMH soon!

I'm no longer an SU demo, but when I was, I stuck to SU for a few reasons.

1. It helped keep a lid on my spending and helped me meet my minimums.

2. It helped me stamp better. I spent a LOT of time studying cards made with SU sets and saw the wide versatility offered with the sets.

While the SU catalog, IMHO, does a lousy job of highlighting the different styles that you can make with just SU products, the galleries at SCS (and now blogs) contain an amazing amount of stuff. From contemporary to vintage and everything in between, I felt like I learned a lot by just sticking to SU.

3. I figured that the more I used SU the more my customers would buy from SU.
