I have never needed to condition any SU stamp. In fact the only rubber stamps I have ever had to condition are the ones from JustRite. All the other rubber I've purchased has worked just fine right out of the box!
For clear stamps, some of the cheaper ones I've done the eraser thing, but with the ones made in the USA I have not had the need to condition. I think the quality of polymer has improved greatly in the past few years.
For some of my clear stamps, especially silhouette or solid stamps, I condition with a white eraser.

I lightly sand some of my SU stamps with a file (the one from the distressing kit that looks like the emery board). It's usually the more solid stamps and I only do it if I can't get a good smooth image with them. Seems to make a world of difference every time I do it!
