HELP!! My scratch 'n sniff is sticky...

I tried scratch 'n sniff for the first time last night using Kool-Aid and clear EP. I used the regular Kool-Aid packs (the cheap one's 5/$1.00) did not add any sugar and mixed with clear EP, they look wonderful and smell even better; however, they are soooooo sticky. What did I do wrong??

TIA

Elaine

I am not sure if this makes a difference, but everything I have read says to use either packs of sugar-free jello, or packs of sugar-free kool-aid. I haven't tried this technique, but I'm fixing to. I know they make packs of sugar-free jello, do they make packs of sugar-free kool-aid or is all kook-aid sugar free? If they do make packs of sugar-free kool-aid, that might be the problem. Sorry i'm not much help!

I'm anxious to see what those "in the know" have to say!

I did this with my Stamper's 10 last night, and they worked great!! I am not sure why yours are sticky. Did you overheat the EP??? That might be an answer...just grasping at straws, though.....Let me know what you find out.

I thought I'd read that you had to use the sugar-free Koolaid vs. the packets where you add the sugar to them.

sammamishcert 05-18-2005 08:10 AM

Ohhh! This sounds cool! My girls will love it. I'll give it a try and let you know how mine turns out. I've only got the regular kool aid packs, too.

sammamishcert 05-18-2005 08:19 AM

OK, what's the ratio of KA vs EP? Mine is not sticky but it's got chunks in it. Haven't heard of this scratch n sniff thing before so no sure what it's supposed to look like.

I bet it's gotta be the sugar free stuff...ever drop a regular Coke on the floor?

trudee 05-18-2005 09:40 AM

The Kool-Aid packets *are* sugar free. You have to add like 2 cups of sugar to them if you are making the drink.
Not sure why they are sticky? What ratio did you use?

That's what I thought too. I used a 1:1 ratio, maybe it needs more EP?

trudee 05-18-2005 10:31 AM

Maybe that's it. I used 1/2 tsp kool aid to 1 tsp EP.

armadillo 05-18-2005 12:14 PM

You most definitely do not want to use Kool-Aid or Jello that has sugar in it as the sugar burns when you begin embossing. The large packages of Kool-Aid have sugar in it.

marcymcwhorter 05-18-2005 10:01 PM

I think it needs to say on the package, sugar free. Have you seen the new koolaid commercail- the packs say sugar free on them.

trudee 05-19-2005 08:19 AM

On the small packets that we are talking about, it says on them "Unsweetened soft drink mix". There's no sugar in them.

scrappiemommie 05-19-2005 03:23 PM

Mine did that too- I did a 1-1 ratio AND a 1 part KA 2 parts EP and both came out sticky...and it WAS sugarfree....

stampinboilermaker 05-20-2005 03:29 AM

You don't want the "unsweetened" kind, but the "sugar-free" kind, which has artificial sweetener in it. When you make the unsweetened kind to drink, when finished it is not sugar-free because you've added 2 cups of sugar to the mix. The sugar-free, when made, is still sugar free because no additional sugar has been added...KWIM?

I haven't done this myself, but I've read where there is a 2 parts EP to 1 part Sugar-free Kool-Aid/Jello/whatever, or even 3 parts EP to 1 part smell good stuff.
Good luck on your stamping---let us see what you made! Maybe you could use Wonka-vision so we can scratch & sniff it, too! :)

Hmmm so we WANT to use the larger packets that say sugar-free as opposed to the little ones that need to have sugar added? I used the little ones that you add sugar to when you make it into Koolaid (I didn't add the sugar though for my scratch and sniff...)

WOW! I'm soooo confused. I have some Jello that says "sugar free" maybe I'll try that and see if the results are better. I'll keep you posted.

I don't usually buy Kool-Aid, so I'm not sure on packet sizes, but you just want the ones marked "Sugar-free"! I've also read on another thread here that you can use s/f jello, pudding, drink mix, and even cocoa.

Here are some threads about this technique...

Okay, and after reading these forums, it sounds like many paople have had success using unsweetened drink mix as well...I guess as long as there is no sugar in it to carmelize or burn, it should work! Not sure about the sticky factor, though... Maybe you could try a little of each kind of drink mix (unsweetened vs. sugar-free) and see what happens.

HTH!
