Grand Forks Shopping

I'm heading to Grand Forks for a little shopping trip next week. What stores are the best for scrapbooking/stamping supplies? I want to try to find some lunch boxes & the giga scalloped oval punch. I also want to check out the storage cubes at Target.

TIA!

LindainND 12-28-2006 06:15 AM

In East Grand Forks, MN is Ben Franklins. It is located in a mini mall across the street from Cabella's . That is about the only place to get anything stamping related. They have a big stamp, scrapbooking, and punch section. Of course, there is also Walmart, Joann's, the fabric store near KMart, and Target that may have a few items. Good luck. Have fun.

LindainND 12-28-2006 06:22 AM

Isn't there a Hobby Lobby in Grand Forks? OOOOhhhhh go there!!!!!!

bluesh4rk 12-28-2006 06:57 AM

Oh shoot I'm thinking Fargo. No Hobby Lobby in the Grand Forks area.. there is always Cabellas... LOL! Yeah I remember that Ben Franklin has a lot of scrapbooking/stamping stuff.

The Ben Franklin store is awesome. Otherwise JoAnn Fabrics and I'm not familiar (my daughter just moved there) but there is a place at a strip mall where they have a scrapbooking store. Sorry wish I could be more Help. Meeting my daughter to drop of kids next week in Fargo hoping to hit a few places.

sbing stores in Grand Forks

I know this is an old thread but Ben Franklin now only has about 1/4 of its SBing stuff now and it has also moved to the K-Mart Mall. There is a great sbing store behind the Columbia Mall and also one across from the Altru Hospital in the Scheels mall.

What are the names of these other scrapbooking stores? Hmmm... I might have to try to find these. I don't get to GF as much now that I'm closer to Fargo but I grew up in Crookston. ;)

Thanks!

Scrapbooking 4 Fun is by Scheels (across from Altru) and Perfect Pages Plus is over by the mall.

Topaz_n29 06-21-2007 06:50 PM

jordyns-mom 06-22-2007 07:17 AM

yes it is the columbia mall. There is a little stip-mall behind Sears, it is in there.
I also heard that the SBing store in the Moorhead mall is bigger and better. I haven't lived there for 2 years and I thought it was good then but I have heard it is alot better.

Topaz_n29 07-04-2007 06:53 PM

Is Moorhead off i29?..i might drive down for the day to Fargo also..if there's more there..is there a Hobby Lobby in Fargo??
thanks

KimberlyinMN 07-04-2007 07:02 PM

You can take Exit 65 (Main Street in Fargo) and head East. This will eventually take you into Moorhead (crossing the river). To get to the LSS called K & Krafts in the Moorhead Center Mall, stay on Main... cross the bridge... and turn left onto 4th Street. You'll cross railroad tracks and at the next light go straight and the mall will be on your right. K & Krafts is on this end of the mall. (It's a small mall, the only big store is Herberger's.)

Hobby Lobby and Michael's are in Fargo. If you get back out to I-29, take the exit for 13th Street S. (63 or 64) Head West. Hobby Lobby is by 45th Ave. on the North side of the street. Michael's is actually in West Fargo but still on 13th Street and also on the North side of the street.

By the way, it wasn't until I was in college that I realized that Fargo and West Fargo were two different towns.

Hey y'all! I'm planning a day-trip to Grand Forks this weekend (July 28 ), and I'm wondering if the above info is still current. Mostly I'm looking for stamping supplies (as opposed to scrapping supplies), and I may only have enough time to go to one LSS. I'm looking for stuff that Michaels doesn't carry, since I work at Mike's and I can get all that stuff here at my leisure with my staff discount. From my last trip to California and the little online browsing I've done lately, I think I'd be happy with some Penny Black and Hero Arts stamps, but that's not an exclusive list.

I've heard that JoAnn in GF doesn't have much for stamping at all, so I wasn't necessarily going to try there, but I think we were already going to hit Super-Target.

Anyone have a recommendation for me?

Oh, yes, and Paradiso for supper before going home! mmmmmmmm

Paradiso is Mexican. There is also a Paradiso in Fargo. My mom is from California, and met my dad while they were both going to school in Texas. Because of this, Mexican food has been a part of our family's "menu". When we visit family in California, just about the only restaurant food we eat for about 2 weeks is Mexican. (Fast-food doesn't count.) Since the closest Tex-Mex/Mexicali style restaurant to Winnipeg is in Grand Forks, we make it a point of going whenever we're in GF or Fargo. And no, for all the heathens out there, Taco Bell and Taco Time and the other Mexican-themed fast food places are NOT really Mexican RESTAURANTS. It has to be a sit-down, chips-with-your-meal, beans-and-rice, fried-ice-cream-for-dessert restaurant.

I used to go for weekend trips to GF and/or Fargo with a girlfriend, and our rule was that we couldn't go to restaurants there that we had at home. There was just nothing "new" that we were experiencing that way. That's why we always went to Paradiso, Blue Moose (in EGF), and a couple of other local places when we were in GF. I think we mostly went to Fargo for the other "special" eating opportunities -- Outback Steakhouse, Chili's, and TGIFriday's.

Since I live IN the city, and love the city, I don't have a problem with going anywhere in the city to visit my favorite restaurants. Then again, since Red Lobster on Pembina Hwy closed and now there is only the one on Portage, I haven't been nearly as often as I used to. (sniff)

Melilot 07-25-2007 07:45 PM

I can't decide now if I'll try either of the LSS in GF. They both have websites, and the one across from the hospital showed pics of their interior. It really looked like just paper and embellishments -- not much for the stamper at all. I sent an email message to the other LSS -- the one by the Columbia mall, asking about what stamping supplies they have, and I've gotten no reply, and it's 3 days later. They must not want my business.

I don't think I'll have a problem getting to Target or Wal-Mart, and I might just go ahead and see what Jo-Ann has, even though I'm not terribly optimistic about that, since it's not a Jo-Ann SUPERstore. :p Oh well. It's just one day, and we're planning on doing Blue Moose for lunch and Paradiso for supper.

I'll prolly have to spend a weekend or two stalking the LSS's in Winnipeg. I've only ever been to Dalcrafts, but that was years ago, and I've heard they actually SELL stamps nowadays. I still need to hit Scrapbooking by Design and Scrapbookers Anonymous. Anyone want to get together for a shopping trip?? ;)

Hi there! Could you post the links for me? Pretty please? I'm just curious as to what they look like. I haven't been shopping in GF since we got married -- Fargo is my "new" stomping grounds.

Thanks!

Kimberly

Paradiso's is my favorite place. Actually, I still tend to call it La Campana because that's what the GF one used to call itself. There's also a Paradiso's in Jamestown, ND.

For the record, though.. it's more Mexican/American food. It's not "true" Mexican fare. But I don't care, it's still my #1 restaurant. We were just at the Fargo one on Monday night for our 2nd anniversary. :)

Hi all,

The scrapbook store by columbia mall just recently closed. The scrapbook store near the hospital has just recently been expanding their stamping supplies. They have some clear sets and chalk inks. It's a very nice store.

Joann's has basically no stampin supplies. They recently changed the store around and have even less than they did before.

Ben Franklin has moved to the Grand Cities Mall but I have not been there, yet.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Zauna

myralm 07-26-2007 05:40 AM

Here is my 2 cents: Perfect Pages Plus that is near Columbia Mall has closed...it closed maybe 2 weeks ago. Scrapbooking for Fun on Columbia road has a few clear stamp sets, mostly alphabets and flourishes or sets that coordinate with the paper. This store has lots of paper and embellishments. Ben Franklins has moved to the Grand Cities Mall on Washington Road but the store is really small. They used to have a great selection of stamps and scrapbooking supplies but not anymore. They have lots of inks but very few stamps. They moved to a much smaller location so their inventory has really shrunk. Joann's on 32nd Avenue has a few stamps but if you have been stamping for a while you will not like their selection. Michael's on 32nd Avenue has stamps but, again, not a big selection. I tend to purchase a lot of my stamps online or through Stampin' Up since we just don't have the selection here in Grand Forks. I try to hit Fargo once in a while so I can go to Hobby Lobby but sometimes it is just easier to order online!

Melilot 07-26-2007 08:17 PM

Thanks, myralm and Zauna. That was the info I was looking for. Unless someone in my group wants to hit Michaels (I doubt it), I won't be going there. I'm sure that my Mike's in Winnipeg has as much or more than they do. I may still give JoAnn a try, even though it sounds like a bust, and Perfect Pages is out (of business). I'm not really looking for alphabets, so I may not even try Scrapbooking for Fun.

I'm still curious about the Ben Franklin, though. I had heard about Ben Franklin moving and shrinking, so on one hand, I wonder what they still have left, and on the other hand, I wonder if it would be worth my while at all. With most of my stamping supplies coming from Michaels, what I'm looking for is whatever is different from what Michaels carries. Of course, if anyone can give me some specifics on stamps/inks at Ben Franklin by late Friday night, I would really appreciate it. If not, I may just have to drop in at BF and take my chances.

Kimberly -- yeah, I know that Paradiso in GF (and Fargo, etc.) is really just Mexican/American, but it's also the best Mexican food in Winnipeg. There is really just NOTHING up here that compares. I've had some more authentic Mexican food in California, and I love it, too, but that's just WAY too far to go for a food-fix. Grand Forks is a little more manageable, and Paradiso has never disappointed me yet. ;)

Here's the website for Scrapbooking For Fun you asked for. Enjoy!

You're Welcome! I hoped that my info helped. Have fun shopping!

Hey there, Stampers! I just got back from my day in Grand Forks. Not all of it went as planned, but I did come home with some nice stuff, AND I didn't pay duty on it either. The customs agent let us go, even though I had $65 (CDN) worth of stuff, and the rest of the van only had about $10 worth!

On a purely stamping (NOT scrapping) basis, here is what I found today:

Michaels in GF is smaller than either of the Wpg stores. Even so, I still found a stamp there that is at my Mike's, but oddly enough, was a little larger than the one that I found on St. Vital's shelf yesterday (we started getting a slightly smaller stamp, but with the same image a little while ago). I also cruised the clearance bins, hoping to find discontinued Sizzix, and found the Shadow Box number set! We had one of these in Winnipeg, but it was priced at $59 (clearance). The one I found in GF was only $35 (clearance). I used my staff discount, too, and got another $9 off. That would have been definitely worth any duty and tax at the border.

We went to Target next, and found pretty much nothing -- no ink, and only one or two clear stamp sets from Autumn Leaves. DO NOT shop for stamping stuff at Target! If that's all you want, it's not worth your time.

Next was JoAnn. I wasn't expecting to find much, but after a total bust at Target, I was pleasantly surprised to see a stamping section approximately 4 feet wide. I picked up a cherry blossom stamp there from Rubber Stampede. There were some other fun stamps -- especially the ones from Hero Arts, but I was really trying to limit myself, since a lower claim at customs will get waved through better than a large claim. So, it's okay to shop there for stamps, but there really isn't much to get terribly excited about.

After that was Wal-Mart. They also had some Autumn Leaves clear acrylic stamps, but they had prolly 4 different sets of those. I may have to plan another GF trip later and get them then. ;) Except for that, shopping at Wal-Mart for stamping materials alone is not worth a person's time.

It was getting a little late by then, and everyone else wanted to go to Columbia Mall for about an hour before it was time for supper at Paradiso. That was pretty much the end of my shopping. I had already decided not to go to Scrapbooking 4 Fun, and it was just too late to drop into Ben Franklin, even though we passed by it on our way from Columbia Mall to Paradiso.

I'm yawning pretty uncontrollably at the moment, so I'd better post and then go to bed early!
