Hi Cindy, I think it can almost be any kind of bird you wish to paint it. I have painted it a bluebird, young robin, and an American Goldfinch. Have fun with it. I just love that little bird.
I agree with Coleen and will add the Chickadee which is black, grey and white. All these birds could pass for that one.
I would love for it to be a Chickadee, which is my favorite bird. But it just doesn't look like one to me. The black cap goes over the eyes of a black capped chickadee.
I am not sure that they intended for it to be a certain kind of bird ;) to me the short little fat birds like a Sparrow (which there are lots of different kinds), maybe a Finch.... basically could be any of the Conicla Bills (or most of the straight bills for that matter)...also kinda resembles the Warblers but their tail feathers are not so rounded at the end....It actually does not have the markings of a Bluebird at all ......again I really think they just meant for it to be a BIRD in general and any color or paint him will be fine!

I have to say I do not think it is a chickadee either only because they tail is not rounded and there are not any lines on the face....
still think it could be anything tho!!!! LOL

I just looked the chickadee up and you are right! I do wish SU would include a name of birds and flowers in the sets. We all tried to figure out the flower in Nature's Wonders and none of us agreed on one. I thought it was Cosmos until you see the foliage isn't fern like.

that was it =-) I was thinking we had a discussion about a flower in one of the sets!
Look at a Vireo - maybe that is the bird!

Well in the book I have it says:
"Details of the eyebrow and the amount of yellow on the underparts are the best marks separating them. The Philadelphia is the only one with a yellow breast, altho others often show yellowish sides. The Philadelphia has a black eyeline below its eyebrow, while the red-eyed has black borders above its eye, no black in front. The black-whiskered vireo is alike the red-eyed but has a whisker stripe. These vireos are often hiddine in treetops, but all persistently sing or hive harsh scold notes."

Cindy, I love the black capped chickadee too. In fact, it is my favorite little bird. It's such a fiesty little bird scolding many other birds in the forest. I have seen them chase off a red tailed hawk. On the other hand they can be very domestic and sweet.

Coleen
Oh I just love them! They are so cute. I watch them at the feeder. They'll fly up, get a sunflower in their beak, and then fly off with it in the brush line. Then they come back and get another. It's so funny!
Wow, lots of bird enthusiasts here! I like to use different colors, so I'm not so picky about the specific type, but your info is very interesting. My son is a Cub Scout, so will use the website for him when he needs to study wildlife. Thanks for sharing.
I suppose you could do the same with the butterfly stamps as well, so many varieties of them and fun to color.
