This is a new thing for me - I've never asked for an RAK before. A little background: My sister (age 44) - woke up last Tuesday at 1 am - she had no feeling in her legs and no movement. They took her by ambulance to the local ER (Beloit, WI) and did an MRI - nothing found. Put her into another ambulance and transferred her to the Swedish-American Hospital in Rockford, IL. More MRI's, CAT scan and ultrasounds revealed a mass on her left ovary and some kidney stones...no answer as to why she is now paralyzed. She was there until yesterday when she was transferred to a rehab center in Rockford, IL.
In the midst of all this, her husband (my BIL) was called to go to Milwaukee. His mother (who has emphysema) was found unresponsive. She was transferred to St. Luke's and put on a respirator. At 9 am today they are taking off the respirator. Whatever will happen, will happen. She did not want to be on machines.
My sister is huge into stamping. If you could find the time in your busy day or week to drop her a card, I would be most grateful and appreciative. She is far from her family and friends and so very scared and afraid that she may never walk again. The doctors say they may never know what caused this and if she'll be able to walk or feel her legs again.
She is at the Van Matre Rehabilitation Center
950 Mulford Road
Rockford, IL 61108
I know this would certainly brighten up her day and help pass the time.
Thanks in advance to all of you for your help.
Gratefully,
Mary

My BIL's mom was taken off the respirator this morning and started breathing on her own, regained consciousness and was sucking on ice chips by noon -
truly a remarkable event.....so - if we could just get my sister fixed that fast it would be great...
So far - they have no idea what's wrong with her, if she'll get better, or when. They want to wait till after she ovulates to see if the mass on her ovary sloughs itself off on its own (?)
She had therapy today - they got her dressed, put on her shoes and got her up to stand between the parallel bars - she couldn't feel her legs or feet but said it felt good to be vertical - at least for a few minutes.
Thanks again, ladies, I know I can count on you to innundate her with mail!!

Mary,
I know Barb & Don and am very sad to hear this news. I will send a card out right away. I have sent this information on to others who may know her around here and let our Pastor know. They will be in our prayers!

I don't know why but I always forget that you're on SCS too!!! Thanks so much for your thoughts for Barb & Don - I know they'll appreciate it.
Also - Thanks so much for spreading the word to the people she knows up near Tomah....I probably talk to her every couple of hours and I know that every time I tell her so and so says hi or thinking of you she's very grateful.
Thanks again both for your thoughts and your thoughtfullness.
Mary

Cards and prayers coming Barbara's way. But here's the oddest coincidence: Your sister and I share a first name, Barbara - but the rehab center is on Mulford Road - my maiden name is Mulford!
I just got home from a Terrific Tags Punch class; happen to have made a friendship card that seems appropriate! It's on it's way with a prayer for a speedy recovery.

Just a quick update: no change in my sister....they're going to get her into the shower today. I'm sure she'll like that. Nothing like getting cleaned up to boost your spirits.
The mother-in-law however, is another story. She took a turn for the worse late yesterday afternoon. Seems her body is storing CO2 and not expelling it. She was delusional, didn't know where she was, who she was, why was she in the hospital, etc. Haven't heard an update yet today but last night it didn't look good.
Thanks to those who have responded to send cards.....I can't wait for her to start getting them...she will be totally surprised as I did not tell her that I asked for RAKs for her.
Once again, thanks so much for taking a bit of time to make someone else's day better.
Mary
