I'm fairly new to card making and I had not seen handmade acetate cards before. I've checked local stores and can't find any acetate. I've checked the web and have found "vellum transparency paper". Can someone please let me know where to purchase this "acetate" and if it is different from the vellum. Also, what inks and adhesives do you use on the acetate?
Thank you much.
I use laser transapency sheets. I purchase mine from Sam's Club on-line. It's the highland brand. You can also get them at office supply stores but the packages of 50 or 100 are pretty expensive. If you just want to try them out you can get some from the copy center at an office suppy store -- they will ususally sell them to you. they're not cheap (something like $0.50-1.00 per page) but better than buying a whole box and finding out you don't like to work with them.
As far as ink, you can use stayzon or any other ink designer for non-pourous surfaces. For coloring use sharpies or any other permanent marker (I use bic brand that I purchased in a multi-color assortment at my Sam's club). If you're using laser transparencies you can also emboss on them using craft ink or versamark. Inkjet transparencies can't take the high heat so you shouldn't emboss on those.
I bought mine at office max... 100 for like $17. I just cut them with the good ol' fiskars trimmer and then I fold them the rgeular way and I use stazon to stamp on them... they are really pretty... easy to make and have a HUGE wow factor! I hosted an acetate card swap and they were lovely!I think there is a how too in the tutorial section!

I had seen some really cute acetate cards and was told by my demo that stampin up used to carry acetate and all acetate is are those transperancies the teachers write on in school or you can copy on for the overhead projectors. Knowing this I figured why not check out my local office supply store. Transperancies are not CHEAP. it is about 30-50bucks for 50-100 sheets depending on what kind/brand/where you buy it. What I would do is call Staples, office max or kinko's (any place that copies) and talk to their copy center and ask how much it would be for you to buy it by the sheet. I did this at my local staples and bought 30 sheets for 3 bucks!!!! it may not be like this everywhere but for me I did not want to pay a lot just in case acetate cards weren't for me. so this is my 2 cents. hope it helps!
I too bought mine from Office Max....bought a huge box and shared some with friends. I used it a lot for both cards and overlays and little tags. It is fun to use.
I love working on the acetate sheets (transparency) with alcohol inks (Tim Holtz/Ranger). The effects are absolutely awesome but you have to play with them a bit and the results are not what you would call, organized. I use the alcohol inks mostly for background paper for my projects. I have used them also making "shaker" cards. Those are cool. I stamp fish on them and put sand in sometimes, and little itty bitty shells and close it up. The acetates just give a real "arty" look to cards. They are a step up, to me, in the card making world. They just have their own look; classey to me.
Write on transparency sheets will run about $17 for a box of 100 at an office supply store. The expensive ones are the ones that will run through printers. Those usually have a "good side" to run threw the printer and look cloudy so I alwasy buy the write on kind. I even make boxes with them and they work out great!

I bought the package of 10 transparencies at Wal-Mart and didn't care for them too much... they were awfully cloudy. But I didn't want to have to shell out 30 some bucks on a gigantic box of them, either... regardless of how truly transparent they were! LOL Low and behold, I found a package of 6 of them at my Hobby Lobby, in the scrapbooking section near the scrapping CD Roms and photo papers. They are wonderful! Totally clear and very easy to work with. In fact, I just posted a card I made with one of them today!
As for ink, I prefer StazOn when working with transparencies/acetate. It dries quickly and will not come off. I also use pretty aggressive adhesives, too... Terrifically Tacky Tape (also known as Red-Line tape), glue dots, things like that. Hope this helps. Have fun!
