I lived in the UK for five years when I was in the Air Force, and then as a contractor -- when I lived there, I justified buying every single cross stitch magazine they came out with because it was only 2 - 3 pounds (ignoring the fact the exchange rate was about 1.99 to a pound). Now that I am back in the states, however, the prices at Barnes and Noble make me want to choke ($10 for a magazine!)
Now that I am into papercrafting/cards, I have noticed there are some nice British papercrafting magazines. Does anyone else in the U.S buy these? If so, is there one you particularly recommend?
Actually all magazines in the UK are awesome...but that's another story (ever seen the British Cosmopolitan? SO much better than the U.S version).
Its because no one can afford them! I just looked at at scrapbook mag from the UK and it was $13. My MIL lives in Edinburgh and will be here in July. I'm going to see if she'll bring me a few over. The exchange rate is a killer right now for us. Its keeping me from taking the kids to see family in Scotland.
You might find some of us UK people who'd trade you for US mags if the shipping isn't a killer (I know we have a printed paper rate for sending stuff and a single mag probably wouldn't be too bad - I'm guessing it might be the same for you guys). I'd love to get a look at things like Stampers' Sampler or Take 10 but have never seen them here (I don't live near a bit city with a Borders or Barnes & Noble type bookshop that might carry them).
I occasionally buy something like Craft Stamper or Simply Cards and Papercrafts but rarely find I want to keep them so I'd be happy to swap the odd issue once I'm done with it - feel free to pm me if you want to set something up Michele or you could try posting in the buy/sell/trade forum if you think the idea might appeal to others.
Funny how the grass is always greener - over here in the UK we talk about how good your magazines are in comparison to ours! Like AngelNorth said you will probably find that most UK SCS would happily do a trade if anyone is interested.
Michelle, I am a bit biased because I do some work for Practical Publishing (Simply Cards & Papercrafts, Papercraft Essentials, Complete Cardmaking, The Scrapbook Magazine).
My favorite is Simply Cards because it fits my style completely.
One thing that the UK mags do really well is the step-by-step instructions/tutorials so expect that in almost all of their mags.
It's been a while since I have seen any of the other publishers magazines so I can't give you much info on them, but here is kind of a breakdown of the Practical mags:
*Simply Cards is a more overall papercrafts magazine...it tends to cater to a bit more seasoned papercrafter and tends to have a wider range of papercrafts
*Papercraft Essentials is aimed at techniques. It teaches a technique and then shows you cards and projects using that technique.
*Complete Cardmaking is more of a straightforward, here are the cards and how to make them type of magazine...very little fluff/article content.
*The Scrapbook Magazine is of course aimed at scrapbookers.
I hope maybe that helps just a little. It's been a while, but I seem to recall Scrapbook Inspirations and Papercraft Inspirations also being very good.
smiles,
Christi
I am from the uk now living in the USA I often bring friends back uk mags, and happy to help anyone else out if they need it am off in a couple of weeks
I was at B&N last week drooling over some of the British mags, but I had to just look at them in the store since I didn't want to pay that much. OUCH!!
My Barnes and Noble has the Brit craft mags from about 15-20$!!! BUT...I love them so much that I will get one once in a while. I got them all the time when I lived in England. Seems like just about all their magazines come with some little extra stuff. A Book, craft stuff, etc etc. Very cool.
I buy them every month! I am addicted! Love the ones with stamps and all kinds of fun stuff. Great tutorials. I will start uploading the cards as I do them!
Wow, there's been some really old threads poppin' up lately!
It's kind of cool to go back and see discussions from a decade ago. Seems like some things never change ;)
Just a funny anecdote: A friend and I went to a crafting retreat (Renwick Inn in Plainfield IL) two weekends ago. Tammy (the proprietor/host/chef) allows guests to bring donations of craft supplies for other guests to use/take home. As I'm rummaging thru the stuff, I found several items I recognized as being from the UK mags, some of which I already had and others that I added to my collection.
