That's hilarious!! In the last picture on the auction, it has a series of diagrams that explain the method of making the paper. Eat, poop, boil & sanitize, pulp, clean and odorless. What is the picture of the second one?? I can't make it out. Oh, I just figured it out. The elephant is on the toilet.

ROTFLMBO!!!

This is so cool! I love that it is eco-friendly, sustainable economic development in a region where people will really benefit. The colours are beautiful! I noticed the ebayer is selling off-cuts as well -- neato! I will have to do some more reading to see if the seller has some sort of deal worked out with the manufacturer, or if not if there is a way I can buy the paper so it more directly benefits the factory that makes it. Thanks for sharing!

I'm so sad! I can't access this store through ebay.ca. When I do get to the storefront, there are no items.

After looking at the name, I realized my LSS sells this paper. I was wondering what was so special about it and why it was so expensive. Now I know! LOL!

Ya know normally I would be shocked by this but after seeing the coffee that is processed in a VERY similar way (and is insanely expensive!) this isn't so far off! I doubt I'll ever get any tho - I'll stick w/ my SU, Basic Grey and all my other patterned paper

Still trying to find a way to get this online in Canada. The elliepooh website (a yahoo store) only sells to the US.

Well, I've see a lot of 'artwork' done with goose poop at cosignment stores so I didn't get too surprised by this.

BUT I would NOT be using it for any wet embossing!!!

I clicked through the Order and Shipping pages and the cost for 13 sheets(12x12 size) in various colors, including shipping is 11.84 (US). I think I will order some because I really love the idea of people starting a totally new industry from scratch.

Thumbs up Canadian source

I saw something about dung paper on TV once. The artist was in Manitoba and her papers are called Earth Paper. Here's an (old) article about her & her papers:
Musk ox poop + paper = art that’s good for the environment - A Recycled Paper Journey

Quote:

For more information, you can e-mail Cyndi Foster at earthpaperAThotmailDOTcom
Try sending an email, Malhoumel, & let us know what you find (I hope the email addy still works).

And on the tv program she showed (the tv host) that there was no smell. It's organic material, after all. I would have no hesitations using it & this is a great idea!!

I contacted Cyndi Foster about the musk oxen dung paper. My understanding is that she makes the paper for use in the school she works at, but isn't selling it at this point. She will not be teaching next year so may be selling it then. She did offer to email me the paper making recipe, so if anyone here is interested in doing that (they also use porcupine dung, and other herbivore manure) give her an email at earthpaper at hotmail dot com.

I contacted Karl (papapooh himself!) about ordering the paper in Canada, and he will sell it to you himself. You can pay via Paypal easily; don't know what other payment options he has. Shipping is via Global Priority only so that the papers don't get bent up. Two cardstock 8.5 x 11 variety packs will fit in an $8 GP box.

I was searching on the weeb for other options, too. The zoo in Manitoba carries some elephant paper products in-store, and there are also some other companies that make paper gift products using elephant dung. I like the Elliepooh papers though because on their website they make it very transparent how much of the proceeds go back into the communities that produce them.

Makes sense in a way. If any of you have horses, you know the end product is a chewed up fiber. Elephants are like hoses, they only eat grains and fibers. Makes perfect sense to recycle these semi-digested fibers!

Just my $.02 worth!

It's just cellulose. They wash all the other crap (literally ) away quite thoroughly. Changing a baby's diaper twenty times a day? THAT's gross, and dirty, and smelly (but that's why we have soap and water)! Using paper made from thoroughly treated herbivore manure? Not really all that gross.

I too loved the elephant sitting on the toilet! Too Funny! BUT the auction that I saw was thirteen 12x12 papers for $5.99 and $4.00 shipping. Thirteen specialty sheets for only $9.99 and you support the Sri Lankans. I might just have to get some to say I have some!! Besides, it says that it is not smelly! You could use it for cards made with SUs In the Wild!

Okay......I had to bite.......got 13 sheets.......I'll let you all know what you missed out on when I get it!

WOW!! Talk about being on top of things.......I already got a personalized e-mail from Mr. Pooh himself answering a question I had posed in my payment and giving me my postal confirmation number. Impressed I am!! Hope I'm as impressed with the paper!

Ummm... just me, but I don't really think I want to make my own.

But I am laughing at the look I would get on my DH's face when undertaking that project!

I have a friend from Sri Lanka who is involved with this (not just the making of the paper, but also with the local women artisans who create things like photo albums and stationary sets with the paper) to help raise money for tsunami victims. One thing that this industry is doing is creating something that makes elephants worth more alive than dead (dead elephants don't poop) thereby really helping raise awareness and interest in anti-poaching initiatives. Hopefully, by supporting this cause, you are not only getting cool paper (I have seen it, but not used it for scrapping or stamping), but helping save some elephants.

Edited to add some info links, if you are really interested:

I did go to the www.mrelliepooh.com and it was very interesting! I've actually passed the info onto some friends who might like the paper. I'm tempted to get some myself. Very cool.

I just got my paper in the mail. Wonderful stuff! Really thick and the colors are bright and very usable! No smell for those who were wondering! The communication from Mr. Pooh was almost instant and as you can see I ordered it on Friday and received it on Monday!!

I just ran a search on "elephant dung" to see if anyone had posted about this paper yet (I just saw it on ebay last night). So, those of you that have gotten it, what do you think?

It's beautiful! It's very strong/stiff, has a subtle texture, and so far I love it so much that I haven't been able to bring myself to use it yet, even after several attempts on my part. That last one is an honour hitherto reserved solely for my Anna Griffin papers! Oh, and the colours are beautiful and go very well together.

Has anyone been able to bring themselves to cut into this beautiful paper? If so, please post a link here! I haven't been able to find anythin in gallery about elephant dung or elliepooh, and elephant so far is bringing up zoo pages and In the Wild cards.

Here is a card I made with the elephant paper. I had elephant poop and paper in my search names so don't know why it didn't come up. The paper is really thick and porous. As you can see on the card, the ink really sinks into it and the image is not as crisp as it would be on regular card stock. It was really hard to bring myself to use it. The colors are so pretty. But I decided that pretty on the shelf doesn't gain me anything so I bravely cut it!! It was difficult for me to make this card in that I was trying to cut three layers of the paper at once.....a special technique from Technique Junkie newsletter. Since the paper is so thick, I had to make the cuts with an exacto knife and since the paper is so fiberous, it was difficult. Cutting with a regular guilliotine was a snap though.

So funny! I remember when somebody told me that urine is/was commonly used in the production of silk fabric. Makes sense as it has a high ammonia content.

So using an elephant to process fiber for making paper doesn't sound that far off - and easier on the environment than conventional paper production. (believe me you can close your eyes and figure out when you are in a pulp is around.)
