Ok don't shoot me but I'm about to be negative about two of the most popular techniques....coloring with markers and watercoloring. Now like everyone else has said, I see beautiful cards especially done with watercolor...they look like true artists did them. The trouble is Im not an artist, never pretended to be, and frankly anything other than basic watercoloring is beyond me. I'm really not a big fan either of the really messy distress backgrounds with water spots everywhere. As far as coloring I'm disappointed I spent so much money on Copics because I feel like wheN I color images it looks like a 10 yr old could do it. Yes I've seen some pretty cards that use it but even then it's not my favorite technique on cards. I have to admit though I have just started to watercolor a bit and really have enjoyed it so far...now whether I produce anything worthy of a card, we will see.

I don't like using glitter, when I do, it looks like something a first grader would make.


I have a tough time doing shabby chic or vintage, I admire others' work, but it's not my forte.

The pineapple trend. Why? When I was shopping for Christmas decorations at Target last year, there were pineapple decorations - some to place on your Christmas table & some to hang on your Christmas tree - which I thought was the weirdest thing ever! And since then, I have seen pineapples on T-shirts and now stamps and dies. I don't understand what a pineapple represents other than being very, very prickly on the outside and juicy on the inside with a really hard core. Nope, don't get it.

Cheap, poor quality art supplies eg: watercolour paper, doublesided tape, cardstock, paints & brushes. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to use art supplies that don't do what they are supposed to do. I get angry because it is a waste of resources. My 13 yo daughter has received lots of cheap art supplies over the years because she is very artistic & they are just rubbish (for the most part). Some are supposedly "acid free" but they have gone yellow within a year!

@ Kathy, my first thought on Foley was film sound tracks, the added background noises are called Foley (after a real Mr Foley). I love pineapples in embroidery and have made a couple of crewel designs using them, but so far not on my cards. They were a BIG English decor accent back in the 18th century. In American culture they represent welcome and hospitality.


I certainly don't get the Magnolia and some of the Unity/Julie Nutting blank faces. I don't like the spookier weird Halloween stuff either.

I don't like to create using techniques...just plain old stamping for me!

I'm also not a fancy fold person. Yes, it makes me twitchy! I like the look just not the process!

I like fussy cutting too and even though I have some spellbinders and thinlits those extra steps make me twitchy

The extra step in foam mount & PP stamps. I have them because of cost but give me the ease of wood mount any day!

Elle-I get what you're saying about open dies-gee even when you tape it on all sides it still moves? Weird....hey if you like to fussy cut-yay! I just am sad you are not using something-dies are not cheap.

Just a Q-when you use an embossing folder-is it more impressed on one side than the other? Could your machine be a little a little out of whack? (Now I am curious about what's causing your drift, not trying to push you to die cut)

Oh, I didn't know that about pineapples representing welcome & hospitality in the USA! Well, now it makes sense why they have come out with pineapple stamp sets. I have some really old doilies from the mid 1800s that have pineapples on them - some are crocheted & some are whitework - which have come down from the Irish side of my family. It has always puzzled me because I couldn't understand what the connection between pineapples & Ireland would be. Guess it was just "on-trend".

I am the kind of person that is willing to put in the time to learn something but, I have high expectations of being able to make it look half way decent in a fairly short amount of time.
So, sometimes I feel like I really dislike how long the learning curve takes me with some things.

I don't do smelly products either. and I am near sighted to markers or ink pads that put out fumes you have to bend over to "see" is not fun. or those grunge boards.

Dry glitter ( I have read so many funny quotes on that) but seriously "herpes of the crafting world" for certain

I'm so sad people keep hating on mixed media! MM does not have to be one tiny bit messy, cross my heart and hope to die. (Well, actually not.) It's just a combo of different types of mediums. Like pastels and watercolor. Like collage and paint.

The Big Messy trend is a ... trend.

I will get off my mixed media soapbox, which is wood collaged with soft yellow and orange squares, and a daisy painted on it with enamel paint. ; )

I'm not fond of most "techniques" like making your own background paper, whether with watercolors or stamps. I do not understand the appeal of gelli plates for sure!

I guess I'm a lazy sort of card maker and like to use patterned paper or embossing folders - not start from scratch.


I always think about the saying, you can build a car without having to reinvent the wheel.


I hope everyone who reads this thread remembers that just because someone doesn't like something - that doesn't mean they don't like YOU!

Those linens sound amazing!!! If I remember correctly...pineapples were rare to have and probably expensive way back...therefore having them was a mark of wealth and class as well. There were a number of food items like that.

I agree! That was the inspiration for our MIX-Ability challenge here every Friday - I'm a clean and simple stamper that LOVES mixed media - it can be clean!

I am actually surprised how many people dont like mixed media. I thought I was going to be the only one-it's the only kind of class my LSS holds these days.

Well by that definition bjeans....If I use glitter glue, dye ink, a die cut and an embossing folder-I am doing mixed media. (or even just any 2)

I dont mean to bash it. Ironically I like surrealism a lot-and a lot of MM images are that- but I have never liked any collage type thing. With the occasional exception of decoupage.

I dont journal and I suspect it shines best there? It does seem like a good format for expressing personal feelings and there is value in that.

I think it's so funny that people seem to not like those big head/no face people but they are so popular - LOL!! Personally I'm not a fan either.

As for other things - I'm more the simple cardmaker who doesn't want to spend a lot of time doing it - yes, I'm an instant gratification crafter meaning I want to see immediate results. So I'm not a huge fan things that take a lot of time - very detailed images that require very detailed coloring. Since I have my "helper" when I stamp - there's no way anything can be loose like glitter or flocking - my BootsKitty would have it all over him and everywhere he walks. Oh - and all the "extras" cause I'm a very simple cardmaker - give me a paper cutter, some paper, and some embossing folders - I'm happy. I don't need a lot of the other embellishments.....now why do I have so much ribbon and so many buttons?

Art journals are what many people use because it's just very popular now. Mixed media could be a painting on canvas or wood, a sculpture, etc. Some guy you may have heard of made mixed media guitar sculptures in the early 1900s.

BTW, I'm not a big fan of the ultra-layered messy look, though a teacher did some with pockets and pull-outs that were so intriguing.

In an altered book workshop where we removed all pages and added water color pages, it suddenly hit me that my book and cover could be VERY simple and still fit the class theme.

I covered the book with bright white rice paper that had a a grid embedded in it, and cut a small square hole in the cover to show one simple turquoise image on the next page. Minimalist mixed media. : )

It's hard to describe what I don't like, but I know it when I see it! I do not care for cards that look "too crafty" -- I like cards that look professional. Even colored cardstock as a base bothers me. !!!

I have read this thread twice now and I am still struggling to think of anything I hate lol! I don't think I hate anything, I don't do some techniques but that is either because they are just not my style but I like to see others doing it, or because I don't have the required skills to do it...and if I want to do it enough I will build my skills up so that I can do it.

I finally thought of something I really really dislike: Bible Journaling. I just don't get it. When i journal i use words in a notebook with lined or unlined paper. I just can't get into the idea of stamping or drawing pictures in my bible. Some people say they have a separate bible for journaling but if you can't read the words that you are journaling about what's the point?

Whispering: I have a little framed watercolored tree, delicate and soft looking. If you look closely you will notice that the lines of the tree were sewn with thread. MM. ; )

The wonderful thing about watercoloring is, it is not supposed to look like anything. So I say, you probably have lots of card-worthy colored paper. Cut some into a rectangle and add some vellum with a nice sentiment embossed on it and you are all set to go!!

I don't get the mustache thing either. I also don't like red and yellow as a color combo. I once attended a class where we made an Easter card with a red base and yellow bunny. I had to recycle it. I do, however, love McDonalds. Go figure

I couldn't agree more. Whether it's watercolor or gelli prints, if you use paper larger than your card - say 8.5x12 - you can almost always find a section to cut out and use.

You can cut a rectangular hole any size (but smaller than your card) in a heavy piece of cardstock. Then look move it around over your watercolored or gelli printed piece until you find a section you like. You might be shocked.

For example, you can make the hole 1/4" or 1/8" smaller than your A2 card if you want a background for the card.

You could make a hole that's the size of a banner - even die cut a banner - if you think you'd like a watercolor banner.

Basically you're making a template and just moving it around to find the sweet spot or spots. Or you can just put your fingers together in a wonky square or rectangle to look.

One of my watercolored practices was so ugly I was ready to throw it out. But this one small area caught my eye. It looks like a sunset over water that is still one of my favorite elements. It's waiting for the right card or mini-book. I just like to pick it up since it makes me smile. : )
