Fiskars 12" Rotary Paper Trimmer
 

I just got mine from Archiver's! So, I ask you this:

Did I get the right one?! :wink:

It's the one with the markings for different card sizes on the bed of the cutter and the handle... I'd love to hear what you think!

Wow, now I'm REALLY worried -- I know it's late, but no one's talking to me!! :oops:

I don't think yuo can go wrong with any Fiskars cutter! I have an older style similar to this one; but the one I use most is the smaller one ~ I love my cutter!

Have you tried it yet? I want to get a new one, but not like the one SU sells (even though I'm a demo!) Can you cut one than one piece of CS and does it cut even?

I just one very similar - well not really - it doesn't have the markings for the cards. I wish mine did!! that looks awesome!! But, i do like the way it cuts (so far so good!). I think you'll be happy with it for sure!!

I have a similar one and really like it, if you notice it cutting uneven it could be the blade knob is loose, happened to me once. Otherwise I love how it cuts.

Well, I was perfectly happy with my two Fiskars paper trimmers until I saw this one!!! :lol: :lol:

OK, I have one of my Fiskar's rotary for cutting, I have one for scoring, I guess I could use one for perforating and a new one for cutting. No I am going to hold out for a Carl cutter. I do like the look of your new cutter.

Wow! That looks awesome! I wish mine had the markings for cards on it. I think you made a good choice. I have a Fiskars just like the one in the catty, and it stinks. The blade twisted sideways at some point and scarred the groove, now it will never cut right again. But my old Fiskars like the one you have is still going strong!

Okay, let me first say that I really appreciate you all answering my desperate cry for approval - you guys rule.

Shortly after my last post, I got up the nerve to just take the dang thing out of the box and give it a whirl. (I wanted to hold out to see if anyone would beg me not to use it!!) :lol:

At first, I was confounded by the cutting mechanism - I didn't even know how to get the paper under the guide bar!! (Turns out you have to pop up the guide bar itself - it's on hinges). I also didn't realize how HARD you have to press down to put the blade in contact with the material you are cutting - I mean, it's not like I have to start working out or anything; I was just a little too timid at first.

Then came the core meltdown... I'm not kidding, girls. I noticed that the surface of the trimmer (the part with all the markings on it) was covered in a plastic sheet that was rippling up near the cutting blade. So I thought to myself, "Well, DUH - you need to peel that off... it must just be a protector for the aluminum..."

BAD MOVE! The plastic material WOULD NOT come off the surface like other plastic protectors do and I FLIPPED OUT! I couldn't even return it to the store in the shape it was in! I had given the rippled part one unmerciful pull and there was NO TURNING BACK! :oops:

While my DH took it into another room to try and remove the coating, I wrote Fiskars an e-mail to tell them how disappointed I was with the whole thing!! :(

Ultimately, he was able to remove all the plastic (with the help of his trusty steam cleaner) and it looks okay... I had to use some cleaner to get some adhesive marks off the metal.

I'm TOTALLY traumatized, girls!! Will I ever LOVE my Fiskars trimmer?

Liz I have 2 of the new one's (one still in the box) and I also have one of the really, really, really old ones.

I love it. I did hate how hard it was to get the guide bar up after it was locked in....so my dh flipped it over and filed off the part that made it lock so tightly.

Maybe after you use it a few times you'll love it! Good luck :D

I have that same cutter and I LOVE it! It cuts totally straight and will cut 3 or 4 pieces of CS. I got mine at Costco. I like it a whole heck of a lot better than the wimpy little one I used to have. Although I still use that one for trimming things on tiny pieces of CS.

I am actually really happy with the one in the SU catalogue. It cuts a full 12 inch length, I haven't had any problems with mine. Sorry I can't comment on the rotary style one, as I've never tried it.

Did Fiskars get back with you? I hope you are able to work out the kinks and come to like it

Leslie, Fiskars hasn't replied at all, no... which isn't super surprising. At this point, I've resigned myself to this cutter and just hope I can grow to like it! :roll:

Ok, I just got back from Costco, and purchased the Fiskars cutter. I love the fact that the dimensions are right there.

If you have this one, is yours really hard to lift the guard rail up? I thought I had broken a finger using all of my might to lift it up. :)

Does it get easier? Is there something I can do to alter it somehow?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

OMG - I can't tell you how much I LOVE this cutter!!! I believe I have always been paper-cutter challenged (I could never figure out how to use the big cutters that would be in the school/office workroom, and my little SU cutter would always wiggle and give me crooked edges). BUT, my MIL gave me this 12" Fiskars cutter for xmas and it's unbelievable!! Yes, the arm is a little hard to pull up, but with a strong TUG, it comes up.

It cuts several pieces of CS absolutely STRAIGHT and the blade never wiggles! I went to Michaels today and saw that there are several different blades available for it too! I grabbed the scoring blade, but there was also deckle, perforating, and scalloped blades!! It's the BEST thing EVER :lol:

Fiskars WILL get back to you. They have terrific customer service.

You could return it to the store. If the plastic thing wasn't supposed to pull up, it was defective. Besides that, if you are not happy with the product, you should be able to return it, no matter what.

I've always been happy with my Fiskars cutters. I buy them at AC moore with a 40% off coupon. They do have the same model that SU sells.

I emailed Fiskars once because one of my cutters started cutting crooked and they mailed me a new cutter, no questions asked, and I didn't have to send the defective one back. Pretty good in my book.

Ashley, you were TOTALLY right! Fiskars is sending me A NEW TRIMMER at no extra charge!! They said that the plastic on my trimmer was SUPPOSED to come off easily and they assumed damage to the cutter as a result of my DH having to steam it off so they are sending me a new one!

My faith in this company is totally renewed... and, who knows? I may even fall in love with my new trimmer! :)

OK Liz I have a question.
I bought this same one from Sam's Club and love it. It is hard to raise the rail because of the locking clips. I think I need to file them down like was mentioned above.
My question is about the coating / plastic. I don't remember that on mine. Is it a coating to protect the surface until purchase? Maybe I need to go look at mine more closely.
Other than that, I love mine and can't believe the price I paid for it.

I purchased the rotary cutter late last spring and found it to be terribly hard to lift up BUT after a week or two it became much easier - no need to file or trim.

Jen, I had my husband file mine down.... just flip it over and you can see where it "locks"... :wink:

That model is my main cutter and I love it. It gets easier to use over time. It can cut several pieces of cardstock at a time but you do need to put some muscle into it. I love that when the locking bar is down, your cardstock will not budge. You can even use it to prefold a card very precisely - because the CS will not budge. Sometimes when the edges are not as clean as I would like (with US CS) I put a piece of typing paper underneath and it as stright and clean as you could hope for.

You will love it!

This is my absolutely favorite paper cutter - but I can't figure out a convenient way to use it for scoring (unless I have a ton of cs to cut, and then switch the blade to score - but it's not worth it for a few pieces. How do the rest of you use this to score your paper?

I use mine to score without changing blades using two methods. To fold cardstock in making a card, I clamp down the card as if I were going to cut it, get the blade out of the way and pull straight up on the cardstock that is sticking out. That works just fine to fold my card in half evenly.

To score (as in a 2-4-6-8 box) I put the CS in as if I were going to cut it and then use a butter knife (our bone folder would work here, too) along the cutting edge to score it. It works just fine for that.

Randi - The plastic I was talking about was over the aluminum part of the cutting surface. At first, I didn't even notice it... but then it rippled, I tried to remove it, and all h-e-double hockey sticks broke loose. :)

Fiskars told me that, yes, the coating is to protect the cutter when it is being shipped and that yes, it is supposed to be removed.

I hear you on the locking mechanism, but like someone else here said, I like that the card stock doesn't move once the bar is down!

Liz, I wouldn't worry. I am certain that Fiskars will reply. I actually just emailed them on Monday b/c my cutter is leaving little fringes when I cut and they are sending me replacement parts. It took them about 2 days to respond, but once they did, it was a very quick and painless process.

I have had the old rotary one for years. I love it! I have a few of the fancy blades too. The only bad thing about it, is it is big. It is not convenient to take a lot of places. I bought one of the 12" triple lock purple ones from Fiskers to travel with. The blade kept popping out all of the time. I contacted Fiskers on Monday just to ask if that was what it was suppose to do. A brand new one came in the mail yesterday. Now that is GOOD customer service!
