I was looking through one of my card making magazines and saw an article about alcohol inks. The article said to use glossy card stock. In another example of a card they made a flower using an acrylic sheet.
Questions:
I have Stampin Up glossy card stock but hesitate to use that as it's sooooo expensive. Does anyone know of another source of glossy card stock ?
What do they mean by "acrylic sheets "? What are these?
Can I buy felt at a fabric store and cut it to make felt pads ? I bought the Tim Holtz applicator that includes a few pads. The refills at Michael's cost $8.49 plus 13 % tax and even with a coupon that seems a bit high for a few pieces of felt.
Ranger makes a great glossy cardstock that is fairly reasonable in price especially from online discount scrapbooking stores. At a LSS I pay a little over 5 dollars for 10 sheets.
You can use alcohol inks on acetate sheets - I found mine at a LSS for 1.30 for 12X12 sheet.
Yes you can purchase your own felt and cut it down for your ink applicator- there is nothing special about Ranger Felt except it comes pre-cut.
Where do you live that the refill felt applicators costs over 8 dollars and then an added 13% tax, Wow that is very expensive... I have never paid more then 5 dollars for 100 pieces of the pre-cut felt made by Ranger and luckily our taxes are not 13%.
I just started using alcohol inks with SU glossy paper. I love the effect. Instead of buying an applicator, I read somewhere online how to make my own. I use an old wood block, about 2x2, put double stick tape in the end and apply craft felt cut to fit. I use a different felt pad for each color because it's so cheap.
The paper is expensive but I usually color a half sheet at a time and cut it up to be the focal point of a card...I can get several cards from 1/2 sheet.
I get my glossy cardstock from www.stampland.com
I get the precut 4x6 size. I don't remember how many sheets, but it's $9.99.
You can also get it at Marco's Paper -- The Best Source for Paper, Envelopes, Cardstock & Accessories Since 1971
I love using alcohol ink. You can get the most amazing looks. I've also used the glossy bookmarks from Michael's (not the same kind of glossy as regular glossy) & get some really neat patterns. I also drop alcohol with an eyedropper once in awhile for some unique looks.

Katielady- try getting the Ranger paper from Scrappin' Great Deals. I've bought it there, and it's cheaper than Michael's. Also, she's got a 15% off sale this week. I've also tried the photo paper from Costco- it's got a different effect- the colours are more vivid on that than the Ranger gloss paper.
I've also cut out my own pads from dollar store felt- works like a charm!
I love the AIs and am always trying to find new effects to get with them. You can get glossy paper very reasonably online at paper vendors, those that specialize just in papers. Google sources online using "glossy paper".
I have thought about making my won felt pads too. I think this is a great idea.
If you have a print shop near by check with them. I buy a ream of glossy paper at a time and then cut it down myself. But the print shop will cut it for me, if I ask.
I've used coated card stock I bought from Coast Paper. Its not as glossy as the Ranger or SU glossy cardstock but it works great with my alcohol inks. I made some coasters with it and my new alcohol inks and I really like the way they turned out. As for the blending tool, I glued two blocks together from stamps I unmounted, then glued some velcro to the bottom (the hook side of the tape). I use felt I picked up at the $ store and cut it to squares to fit my tool. Here's a pic of the coasters I made and what my tool I made looks like:
