I just ordered the 120 ct. prismacolor pencils from Viking and was wondering. Are these the same as watercolor pencils? Will they work like the SU pencils? Thanks for any help you can give. I hope I didn't just waste my money. I still did good, like everyone else, I got them for $15. after rebate and viking savings.
Thanks,
Nancy
I believe that the pencils from Viking are lead pencils, which means that they are not watercolor pencils and can't be used with the aquapainters, like the SU pencils.

No they are not the same as watercolor pencil. When you draw on a piece of paper with a watercolor pencil you can leave it as is or take a watered brushed and smear the color around. You can not do this with a Prismacolor pencil (unless it specifys that it is a watercolor pencil). However, they are the best quality color pencil in the market. (IMO.)...The lead is soft and you can acheive amazing layered effects with it. I have been using them for years and absolutely love them. I do not own Stampin Up! pencils so I don't know if they are comparable to prismacolors.

IMHO, you need both. SU watercolors are great for watercolor effects. Prismacolor gives you radiant rich color, to apply as is or to use with a resist technique. I use both.
I too just bought these from Viking. I have seen the posts regarding the Gamsol technique (magic colored pencils), but am curious...what else does everyone use them for? Would they work on shrink plastic? Tumbled tiles? Anything else? I'm not very artistic and am wondering if I'll actually figure out how to use them once they get here???

Yes, they work on shrink plastic. I'm pretty sure they'd work on tumbled tiles. They're great on paper, especially smooth paper like the USes. They're also fairly opaque, so you can also use them to color on dark paper (like if you stamp on black, emboss with gold, then color in with the prismacolors).
I think I'm going to have to break mine back out again.
The Hobby-Lobby here in Texas has the Windsor-Newton "SANSODOR" the equivalent of Gamsol according to previous threads and conversations. Perhaps that will help.
I have "Thin-X" The odorless Paint thinner, which is 100% odorless Mineral Spirts. So you might look for that as well. It is another brand by Sterling. Hope this helps.
I love my Prismacolor Pencils and have been using that technique with them for awhile now and really love how vibrant the look is.
