lunch box question

I've seen some amazing lunch box card organizer and was wondering how you get the paper to fit the lid. I know you have to cut to holes for the handles but do you have to do it in pieces? What did you use to cut the holes out? Hobby blade?
I'm wanting to do these for a stamp camp and any help you could give would be appreciated.

I just paint mine then cover with modge podge! I covered one with paper but decided it was a pain so now I just paint! The paper has to be slit the length of the handle then pushed down and cut out with a hobby blade.
