I know this is a silly question, but I am trying to tie ribbon on my Christmas cards. I want it to look something like this card. However, when I do it, I cannot get the ribbon to lie flat when I wrap it around from the back of the card. It is always too loose or pulls on the card  stock.
well, you could tie your bow or knot, then tape the end of the ribbon to the back of the layer....that way you can exactly control how the front looks. It'll save a couple inches of ribbon also.

Thanks for any help.
You could try adhering the ribbon on the back of the card with sticky strip first and then tie it in front. I usually pull the ribbon just a bit tighter because I find that it loosens a little in the tying process. You could also use locking tweezer to hold the ribbon once you tie the first part of the knot.
I sometimes use the tweezers in the crafter's tool kit (they squeeze to open, are closed when not squeezed) to hold the ribbon while I tie. That might help with the too loose/too tight on the cardstock problem!
I use the WAXYO cheater knot -- take a piece of ribbon longer than your layer and tie a very loose staight knot approximately where you want it to be on the card after you wrap the loose ends behind a layer. Then take a smaller piece of ribbon, about as long as you want the ends to be on both sides of the knot, and slip it through the circle formed by the loose knot you tied in the longer piece. Tighten the knot in the longer piece and wrap around your layer, positioning the faux knot where you want it, taping it at the back. Works for me every time. Makes nice flat knots.
I totally cheat by taping a straight piece of ribbon to the card, securing on the back. I leave it just a tiny bit loose. then I slip a smaller piece under the ribbon and tie it in a knot where I want it to be.
I learned a neat trick from my UL...
Put a small glue dot where you want your Knot to be when it is tied. Wrap your ribbon around and do the first half of the knot. Pull the ends up and down (rather than along the ribbon that is wrapped around the card, KWIM) and stick the crossed/tied ends into the glue dot. That holds BOTH ends of the ribbon in place (your 3rd hand so to speak) and you can easily tie the last half of the knot...and its not too tight not too loose!
Works like a charm!!!
