Default Is it just me?

Do any of you have a problem with tutorials that just have music, no voice??? I think hearing someone's voice makes it more enjoyable and personal. No matter how great the project, I really don't enjoy videos with just music :(

Is it just me? NOT trying to step on anyone's toes, just wondering how others feel

I don't like videos. I just like step by step pictures.
HOWEVER, when I do watch a video, it would creep me out if there wasn't talking!

I'm getting used to the idea of video with just music. Took me a while to accept it.

I'm thankful for anyone who takes the time to make a tutorial video anyway they choose to do it. Though I will say that I enjoy hearing each person's voice.

I do not watch videos where there is music instead of voice explaining what I am watching. I also don't do videos where there is music and person speaking.

My thing is that sometimes the background music is LOUD! And not my style of music so it just irritates me. I do like voices telling me what they are doing more than music, for sure. Although sometimes I find myself telling my monitor "Enough already, I don't care what color your cardstock is and how it's your favorite color" and yammer yammer yammer, just tell me how you did it! :-) I do watch a lot of videos though so I guess they don't irritate me all THAT much! ;)

I agree with the above about the on and on and on stuff so sometimes not talking makes the video goes faster. Other times I like the voices if they fun to listen to and explain fast.

Although I really like hearing a persons voice, it really doesn't matter too much. If it's a technique or a fancy fold or something that I want to see I just appreciate the lesson.

I'm with you! I've learned so much from tutorials, both videos, and in pictures on blogs. I so admire and appreciate anyone who takes the time to make a tutorial of any kind.

I'm willing to cut them a lot of slack as far as technical issues are concerned. I've watched some with bad sound, bad photography, dogs barking in the background, etc. It really is the thought that counts with me.

I LOVE videos that show me how to do something!
However, I too find just music annoying. I'd rather have someone talking, explaining what they are doing. If they don't want to tell me what they are doing, then I'd rather just have photos and written instructions. If they don't want to talk or take the time to write, I'd prefer they just make the video without sound.

That said, I don't care for Websites with music either. I find it distracting when I'm trying to read instructions and blogs. And I find it annoying late at night when it blasts through the computer speakers while the rest of the house is asleep.

Actually, I like the song on the "no talk" videos! I have noticed there hasn't been one lately. Thanks, Gina for every thing.

If someone chooses to make a tutorial I am interested in, I am thankful they took their time, energy and their equipment to do it! So what if it has things we don't like. No one is twisting my arm to watch it! I prefer one with no music but one of my favorite blogs has music. I go to it all the time because the woman is wonderful and I love her creations. Don't sweat the small things it will just give you ulcers!

Aw, thanks! I like doing the talking ones better myself, however, there are those days when I barely have time to get dressed so the no-talking ones allow be to provide more videos to everyone, even on those days when I can't find my hairbrush.

It depends. If the video is showing a colouring technique or similar, I actually prefer there to be no talking. But am more than happy with whatever people decide to do on their videos.

I prefer talking with no music. The music would be too distracting. But if there is music with talking, I just leave the speakers off and watch it anyway. Usually when I click on a video tutorial, I just watch, until I realize that there probably IS someone talking - then I reach over and turn on the speakers. My speakers are always off.

I really only watch the ones with someone explaining, but it always amazes me the time and energy it takes to offer these videos.

I have only just started doing video tutorials, but my first thought was, you have to talk people through things. I try not to assume that just because "I" know and "get" what it is I'm doing that everyone else will just by showing a picture or a shot of something. I think it's too risky a thing to do and they'll never come back to your video channel again.

So, I have to agree, when I come across a tutorial that's music only, it better be VERY simple to follow without words, or I'll be checking out within the first 30 seconds.

I also do not like videos with a lot of rhetoric preceding the tutorial either. That grates my face LOL

I don't like tutorials with just music. It confuses me, lol. I study music so now I am studying the music and not the tutorials. I can't "train my brain" differently since it's instilled in me. I have been studying music since I was five.

I have a die cutter that most of the videos are music. Without those videos I would not have learned how to use my die cutter. A lot of time I muted the sound and just followed the screen. That really helps.

I think the music tutorials the person filming it could be a little shy too and doesn't want to hear their voice.

I prefer step by step pictures too.

I am also one who does not like music and the person talking at the same time. I always miss something and I am listening to the music. I am like Pavlov's dog with this music thing, lol.

I do write tutorials. I know how hard it is. I have never done a video tutorial. I think that would be so time consuming. I appreciate those who take the time do any tutorial. I know how hard it is.

I'm a very visual learner and don't necessarily need a voice telling me what to do.
I have watched non-speaking videos for many different types of projects (paper-crafting, beading, origami) and as long as the materials are clearly listed/shown and the steps clearly defined one from another I have no problem with music only how-to videos.
I've watched videos with voice and because of the person trying to fit too many words in too short of time have been more confused than if they had just been silent and shown the technique/instructions.

Another pet peeve of mine when it comes to tutorial videos are the ones that take 20 minutes for what should really only be a 5-10 minute video because they feel the need to explain every.little.detail. or they don't have all of their supplies handy, etc.... I remember watching a video that I fast forwarded through to the key points. I wrote down all the time increments I skipped and added them together at the end....What the person had managed to make into a 17 minute video would have taken only 3 minutes if they had edited

Oh and how about those videos that look like they were filmed by the people that made The Blair Witch Project ;). UGH!

Happy Stamping!

OH YES, me too!!! If I go to a website and music starts to play, I back out of that nightmare as fast as I can. HATE IT!

I just finished doing a transcript for someone who is deaf, so I can tell you that voice isn't all it's cracked up to be either. Good written instructions with quality pictures still beat videos time and time again.

I think I must be in a minority. I like ones with music and no talking so long as there are captions to help.
Music and voice is a definite no-no for me.

I don't mind no talking videos. I try to understand that not everyone is eloquent and may be a little self conscious about their speaking voice. I know I would never do a video if I had to talk, I hate the sound of my voice! lol

I like the music ones, but the best ones to me are the ones that ladies tape it first and then edit it so they talk just about what they are doing. They fast forward when doing cutting or inking or something that takes too long. The ones that drive me crazy are the ones where they speak forever before they show you how they did something. I'm just too impatient. It's wonderful that there are so many talented ladies out there!

Wow, thanks for all the feedback!
I, like most others have stated, appreciate the time and effort that goes into making videos, music or not! No one is twisting my arm and I'm not getting ulcers over it!
Just a question, I was curious! It seems its is about half and half!

As a few others have said, the videos should be edited. We don't need to hear children in the background or mindless chatter by the person in the video or leaving to get their supplies. Also realize that we are watching the video, people need to understand and place camera so that we can see what they are doing and not just the back of their hands or head.

Also since I am not interested in duplicating the video project exactly, I don't see the need to take the time for the person to have to name by brand and color each element they are using for the project. Just list that part at the end in words. Otherwise it sounds like they are wanting to make it a commercial for the projects they are using. Give credits at the end if you want, but in written text.

This might sound weird, but I don't like tutorials with only music because I keep thinking I'll miss some step in what the person is trying to teach me or they're skipping steps for how to accomplish the project.

What I REALLY appreciate is when someone provides the COMPLETE list of supplies they used to make their tutorial project. And if they'd provide links to the sources for those supplies that makes me do the happy dance of joy.

I can take them either way. The ones with music just have to be done well, so the instructions come across well without verbal explanation.

Thank you all so much for your opinions. I have been working to make more videos and it is really helpful to hear honest opinions about how you like videos. I always talk in my videos, but I have been wanting to do some where I use music and subtitles, just because I have two dogs, who always want to do something embarrassing on camera (bark, whine, sneeze, bump the tripod, they always do something LOL) and it always takes me a long time to edit everything out.

And personally, I like both. As long as it is a project or technique I am interested in, I will watch it no matter if it is talking or music.

I'm willing to cut them a lot of slack as far as technical issues are concerned. I've watched some with bad sound, bad photography, dogs barking in the background, etc. It really is the thought that counts with me.
ditto on that. Any of it seems tough to me, so I'll take 'em any way I can get 'em. If they want to just put music, so be it.

Thats my pet hate too! Especially because my craft room is right opposite my sons room, and he works nights, so is often asleep when I am up.I hate clicking onto a blog or such, and having music played at me. It wouldn't be so bad if they had a button where you could turn it off- but I've never found one yet. We don't all have the same musical taste- I'm a heavy metal fan, but I wouldn't expect most of my visitors to be,lol.
With tutorials, I find music & talking way too distracting.
I really appreciate all the time & effort the ones who make the tutorials put in to help us learn, I suppose really the problem is that people learn in different ways, and that what suits one person doesn't work for someone else.;)

Putting those tutorials together is so much work - I appreciate them anyway I can get them. I would like to add, though, that I have a hearing impairment. If it's a talking video and the volume is too low, I can't follow the instructions. MOST of the videos are created with the volume too low. That's why I prefer step-by-step pictures and, if I do a video (rarely) I don't put any sound in it - just explain it in the post and add the video for clarification.

I LOVE watching people stamp, but I do NOT like the ones with just music and no talking. I like the talking, even if it's not real polished, or the dogs bark, or the kids whine. It makes it more personal, IMO! I also don't like it if most of the video is sped up. I understand that I don't need to see you sponging an entire card front, though, and don't mind some fast-motion, or breaks to pull in something that's already done. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE watching videos! I enjoy SU ones the most, but if it can be applied to SU and it uses non-SU, then I'll watch that too. Did I say that I love the videos with the talking?? :-)

I have to agree (with most) of you. I want voice! ;)
I never would have thought it made such a difference, but when I went to watch the video tutorials for some new software I couldn't figure out what was going on. Literally. There were pop up text boxes (that were sometimes covered up by the player buttons - which wouldn't go away) every so often but they don't give you the same kind of info. I mean - I could do what they showed me (sort of) but I never could figure out *why*.
Ugh. Of course this particular software was the result of some unholy union of chaos and the devil... why did I think the customer support was going to be any better?
