How do you store loose ribbon yardage?
On another thread, there are a bunch of us going in on a huge ribbon purchase. I am buying 10-20 yards of a bunch of different ribbons. The catch is that it won't come on spools because we're splitting up 100 yard spools among the group.
So, I'm wondering how I'm going to store all of this ribbon. I know about the Craft Keepers things, but that is really only for short lengths of ribbon, not for 10 yard lengths. I need to be able to keep it straight and I don't want it all getting tangled.
I'm starting to become addicted to ribbon. At Michaels they always have it on sale for $1.00 and I can't help myself. I have the boxs that have holes that you can put the spool on but for the ribbon that isn't on the spool I started putting it in a glass jar with a lid. I got the idea out of one of the magazines and it really looks cute and can be used as a decoration as well as for storage. I also put the extra pieces in a smaller glass jar. I also bought a small iron for (Heidi Swapp) ??? I guess that was the name of it and if they get crinkled you can iron them but I don't fill my jars to wear the ribbon is mashed down so I havent had to use it yet. You need to look around on some websites maybe they have a picture of the jars filled with ribbon. I can try and post one but I've never done that before.
We were just talking about this last night. Best we came up with were TP or paper towel tubes or pieces of cardboard (cut down, say from the back of a tablet).

That's a pretty good idea. I have cardboard saved from the packs of Creative Memories page protectors. I could cut them like the embroidery floss bobbins, but larger and keep them in a plastic shoebox type thing.

Can you post a pic of your jars? I can't picture it. Do you put a hole in the lid? What kind/size jars did you use?
i use a clothespin and then wrap it around that. use a sewing pin to keep it secure.
for all my spools i have a pack of pins to keep them secure. bugs me when they are loose and all over the place! HTH
Ok, I opened this thread to tell how I saw ribbon wound up on fat wooden clothespins this past weekend, but I wound up having a real DUH moment when I read Kimberly's thing about the pins. The loose ribbon has been driving me absolutely bonkers, and I can't believe I didn't think of that on my own.
I used to use the TP rolls and hated them--bulky, awkward, and ribbon kept rolling off even though I tried to tape/pin/tuck the ends on. I switched to zip baggies--one for each color--and love it. It takes way less space and is very inexpensive. I can easily pull out just what I need, and stuff the rest back in with no problem.
That said, I LOVE the glass jar idea--it's so pretty and decorative in a scrap/stamp space, and I plan on putting up a shelf and giving that a try after we move.

I like the clothespin suggestion. I would love to find some old fashion kind that are more rounded pegs than the squarish clothes pin that are more common today. Does anyone know where I can find the rounded wooden clothespin ( If this even makes sense).
I usually fold mine up neatly then put it into a snack size ziplock..works great and stays neat, if it tends to go everywhere I wrap a rubber band around it loosely.

I store it two ways 1. I use bobbin holders (in the embroidery floss section at michaels), wind the ribbon around the holder and store those in a clear artbin container 2. I just bought some jars from Kmart (martha section) that are shorter than most jars and have a wide opening so the ribbons are easy to get out. Hope this helps.
I saw this idea at the last scrapbooking convention I went to. I am working on setting it up in my room and it is good for smaller pieces of ribbon. from a bar or hanger hang those clip curtain loops you can by a target to hang curtains from a clip. Then you need loose binder loops (like the ones inside a 3 ring binder) from an office supplie store. Loosely knot your ribbon around the loops and hang from the curtain loops. You can hang the bar on your wall or hang the curtain loops from a hanger and hang on a hook on the wall. That way you can see all your ribbon. You can orgainze the ribbon by color or pattern on the loops. You can also take down the loops seperately when you need them.
I have read back over this and not sure it makes sense unless you see it, but it looks really neat!
I found out this would work for loose ribbon. I use CD cases to store my un-mounted stamps in. And I was always throwing out the insert, Which I hated doing. So one day I thought about ways to use them. and this what I came with. What I did was took a CD insert and threaded the ribbon in the middle hole and wrap around the insert and then added a little tape to hold it. one could use Stick pins for holding. I just didn't have any at the time. This also work for Fiber that you have loose.
I store these in my Iris Cart.
I found this picture sometime back - and thought for sure I found it on SCS....but I've slept since then so who knows!
Anyway - I loved this idea and over the last few weeks have been re-organizing my ribbon on the clothespins in jars. All of which I picked up at the .99 store :-D

i think the most i've wrapped so far is 10 yds. it's in the works for me to be getting more...not that i need more ribbon, but you can never have enough! :cool:
for my pieces and "cut too much but can't part with it" ribbon, i have those in my punch tin.

I went to Bass Pro with DH and found some lure storage cases on clearance for $1.99 that are perfect for this. Each cubby is 1x4 and there's about 20 in a case. It's frosted so I can see through it also. The only bad thing....it says BROWNING on the front. I have SO got to figure out how to cover that up :rolleyes: -- just does not match my stamping supplies...

Maybe a Mr. Clean magic eraser would take it off? Is it printed?

Do you know the name of the product? I am trying to find one online so I can see it.
There's no name on it or product number and it was on clearance so they may not have this one anymore. I would think any long-lure plastic storage boxes would serve the same purpose -- and you might find one without the manly "Browning" emblem. LOL

Well, I started with clothespins from Dollar Tree and was able to get a quite a bit on each pin - although some are fairly "fat". But....ran out of clothes pins (which should have been a sign right there! if 96 clothespins is not enough....I have WAY too much ribbon) Anyway.....I picked up the next round of pins at the .99 store and found they are shorter :mad: so I couldn't get as much ribbon on each pin.
This whole project started with 9 jars and 96 pins - I am now up to 18 jars and 196 pins (some are duplicated and I wound ALL of my ribbon now - including the stuff that was on spools)
I would say that the "fatter" rolls are approximately 5 - 7 yds?
I have to admit.....I'm a ribbon monger! When I run out of spools, I wrap around TP or PT rolls. I like the CD innards idea because I'm always throwing them away (what a waste!). 10 - 20 yards would wrap really good around that width. 20 yards is a little much for TP rolls.
I first tried to have my ribbon on a dowel and totally frustrated myself when I wanted to take it to my desk. So I used the dowels and made hammock style shelves instead. Used old wall paper. All four shelves cost me less than $10.

OK, that's just way too cool! But it's clear that you have a ribbon addiction problem.....unlike me. :rolleyes:

K, more questions. Can you describe exactly how you did that? I can see the dowel and the wall paper, but how did you attach it all, etc?

The room is a craft room in my basement so I really didn't care what I did to the walls. If you have a REAL room, you may not want to do what I did. I purchased big red hooks from Home Depot that can be screwed into the wall. Two hooks for each shelf. I laid the dowel on the hooks. I took a long strip of wallpaper (only because it was really sturdy) and actually stapled it to the wall then looped it over the dowels to create the hammock and secured with just tape. I hope that makes sense. It isn't the prettiest thing in the world but has worked really great for me. My stamp room is really long and narrow and getting the ribbon off the desk and up on the wall was great for me!

It reminds me a lot of the rain gutter ribbon holders I've seen in the gallery, but cheaper, I think. I'm getting ready to move back to the US and into my craft room and I was the ultimate storage for everything!

We're in Israel. We took a temporary relocation here for DH's job. It's been great, but we've been here now for 2 1/2 years and it's time to go home. We're actually moving back to Aloha, OR.....so we'll be neighbors!

Nope. Life here is not what you see on the news. It feels much like life there, supermarkets, shopping malls, restaurants, gas stations, etc. We're so glad we didn't let fear stop us from coming. It's been a great experience.....well, except for the lack of crafting stuff.
