Default DRAT!

Just had to get on and share - I'm sure that I'm not the only person this has happened to...so I finally get the two year old and eight week old down for a nap and decide to go work in my craft room and finish up a Christmas gift (having Christmas with the in-laws tomorrow). So I complete what has turned out to be my favorite gift I've made to date. I want to take a picture of it, so I set out some fabric for the background and get it all set up for the picture...run excitedly into the other room and grab the camera...run back...and take the picture...only the BATTERY IS DEAD ON THE CAMERA! Sigh. Total disappointment. So now I have to wait to share my creation!

This always has a way of happening at the most inconvinient time on vacation too, like when we're in an extremely scenic place with no extra batteries or stores to buy them!

OK! The battery is recharged and the baby is asleep, so I got to take some pictures! Unfortunately the lighting at my house is AWFUL, so I won't get a really good picture until the gift is opened tomorrow at my MIL's house.

Thanks for all the wonderful compliments! I had originally ordered a canvas gallery wrap of the middle picture, but the company I got it from did a HORRIBLE job on it...and I was sooo upset because I didn't have time to order a replacement. Then I got to HL and found an acrylic album (yes 53queenbee that's what it is!) on clearance because the package had been opened (all the pages and cover were there...nothing messed up or missing! jackpot!). I was originally going to hang three panels vertically, but then I asked my dad if he had any wood laying around in the garage I could use...and this is what we came up with. I have to say that I like it way more than the gallery wrap and it was WAY cheaper to make.

I also have enough to make one for myself. I also plan on making one for my mom.

Oh and the funny thing is that the piece of wood was trash from the box that my mom's new dishwasher came in...and my dad thought to save it "just in case" (yes, you should see his garage! LOL)

That's such a lovely gift. I love the flourishes on the wooden bar.
Two batteries is my answer - for both my DSLR and compact I have spares, so there is always one charging/charged, and one in the camera. It's a small outlay for a HUGE convenience.

I learned on my two digital cameras (Nikons) that the batteries drain while in the camera so I've gotten in the habit of removing the battery until I'm ready to use the camera. You might want to give that a try. I also have two batteries for each camera.

Thanks for the suggestions about the battery...I will probably invest in one in the future. It's my fault it was dead though...we have only taken like 1600 pictures in the last two months...that's what happens when you have a newborn! :P I think the last time I charged it was the night before she was born...but then again I have new mommy brain so I might have done it once since then.

You guys have totally made my day with all the compliments! They loved the gift! I am going to work on instructions this afternoon and am hoping to make one for myself next week sometime. It really was hard to give away!

I haven't forgotten those of you who asked for instructions! I plan on recreating one and taking pictures and then making a pdf or word doc, but that probably won't happen for a few weeks due to the cold weather (not wanting to take the new baby out unless i have to!)

So here are some basic instructions:

Supplies:
  • Wood (could use a dowel or an old yardstick would make a cute teacher gift)
  • paint
  • hooks (6)
  • three pieces of an acrylic album (can use the pages or the covers)
  • Stazon
  • stamps (I used "Simply Said" and a clear set from Michaels my mom had
  • pictures
  • cardstock
  • embellishments
  • adhesive
  1. Sand and paint the wood - I actually used a cloth to rub the paint on like you would a stain. Lay aside to dry.
  2. Create the panels on the pages of the acrylic album - so many different things you can do here! Using the stazon, you can stamp images, add pictures, stamp sentiments, add embellishments - I think a tear bear would be super cute! If you don't have a sentiment you want in a stamp, print it out onto acrylic cardstock. You can use punched out shapes (like the yellow hearts on mine) to cover up the places you put the adhesive.
  3. Line the panels up alongside the wood in the order and spacing you want them and use a pencil to make marks on the bottom of the wood where the holes in the pages are.
  4. Screw the hooks into the wood where you made the marks. Note: depending on the type of wood you use it may be necessary to use a drill to make pilot holes.
  5. Stamp on the wood, or paint words or write on the wood. Once the hooks are in, it is much easier to line up any letters to be exactly where you want them.
  6. Add hooks of some sort to use to hang on the wall - or you could use a ribbon to hang, it just depends on how heavy the wood is.
  7. Hang the pages onto the hooks

I hope these kind of made sense. Again I will work on making and posting more detailed instructions along with pictures at some point! Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks again for all the compliments!!

Hope everyone is having a good new year!
