Default how do you score a card

how do you score a card? Will this make my cards fold neater?

Also... I can't seem to make the same card twice - is this the sign of a beginner? If I want to do swaps, do they all have to be the same exact card?

There are a couple of ways to score a card. One is to use a ruler and then a scoring tool or a stylus to make a grove down the middle. There are also paper cutters that come with a scoring blade. Some people like to score, others just fold it over and press down the fold with a plastic bone.

I wouldn't worry about the cards being slightly different, after all, they are handmade. That is what's special about them. That usually happens to me too.

Hi and welcome to SCS!!!

First off, if you have a trimmer they usually come with a scoring blade. I have a fiskers trimmer and they do. I usually don't use it, though, because I have to take the cutting blade out and I don't want to take the 2 seconds that it takes to do so!! Usually, I fold the card on my own and then use a bone folder tool to smooth it out and it makes a really crisp fold.

I know that the card swap group that I am in makes all of the same card so that everyone gets one of the same.

I usually make one card first to get the sample for my swap cards and then work assembly line style on all of the rest of them. Cards will never turn out identically, but when you do them at the same time you can be pretty close!

Hope that I was of some help!! Karen

I use a scoring blade in my trimmer - best purchase ever!!!

What? You can't make the same card over and over?
Hmm, you must be human! Only machines duplicate.

I gave up scoring my cards years ago! LOL I just fold and crease with my fingers, and no one has complained!! By the way, cards shouldn't be identical. As the other poster said, you aren't a machine -- you are an arteest!!!

I have the fiskars paper trimmer and so also the scoring blade, but am too lazy to switch it out.

I fold with my fingers, then use a potscraper or expired credit card to get a nice clean fold. You can buy the pot scrapers for like 12 for a $1 or something at Walmart, Pampered Chef, etc.... My upline uses these as well.

A trick my demo showed us with making cards is to fold cardstock in half and gently crease with fingers, then cover the folded cardstock with a piece of scratch paper and go over the crease with the bone folder. That way you get a crisp crease, but never get a "shiney" edge by the crease.

If I want to score I use my dry embossing stylus. Which isn't very often. I just made a magic card for a swap and I scored the paper for that... it was much easier with all those folds. But usually when I make a card I just use my bone folder.

Ladies, you don't have to remove the cutting blade to use the scoring blade! I've had both in the trimmer at the same time for years, and just turn the trimmer around to use the scoring blade. I have them in there so that the scoring blade is above the cutting blade when the ruler arm is extended and closest to me, and there's still room to cut an 11" sheet of cardstock.

And stampingnovice, to answer your other question, unless it's a "re-swap" of cards you received and don't want anymore, YES you have to make all of your swap cards with the same design. The way a swap is supposed to work is that you send in a bunch of identical cards, and get an assortment back.
