Do I need a Xyron??

I have the little "X" one, and I'm wondering what you use your 510 (or larger one) for. For vellum, is it really invisible?? I have a coupon and I'm trying to decide if I "need" a Xyron.

Thanks,
Susan

cot10girl 10-06-2004 05:21 AM

I decided I really need one! Can I have your coupon? :D
I think I want the 500 because I don't plan to laminate anything. I would use it for cards more than scrapbooking (right now) and I'm trying to find a good price on one. They aren't available within miles of where I live so might have to shop online. Any ideas?

barbcowan 10-06-2004 05:25 AM

YES :!: I love my 510! The 150 is nice, but there are many times I want to add glitter to a piece larger than 1.5 inches (the 500 would also work for this). I absolutely love this technique & once you try it you will too.

The answer is "OF COURSE you need one. What is it?"

JAMom 10-06-2004 05:48 AM

I have the "X" one and the 900. I have to admit that I don't use it on a daily basis, but I'm so glad that I have it. Some projects we used it for:
-Laminated bookmarks as party favors for baby shower
-Put magnetic backing on photos for grandparents to stick on the fridge
-to adhere vellum (you won't see the adhesive as long as the paper isn't textured - you do lose the "lofty" feel of the vellum)
-dh laminated the little pamplet that comes with Thomas the Train products for our son to use as a placemat -- he loves it!
-to apply adhesive to diecuts that are too big for the "X"

The possibilites are endless... I use it more for scrapbooking and litte craft projects than I do for cardmaking. I think the 500 would be just as useful.

I'd say if you have a coupon, go for it!

My favorite part of my xyron is stamping images on a sheet I have made sticky and now having stickers. Especially if you use the alphadots and then punch them out, putting glue on them to put on paper is really messy business but not if you have already xyroned!!

Too funny, that's what I had to do for our son as well, he had worn it out from opening and closing it, now he still takes it everywhere, but it will last so much longer!

GavynnsMom 10-06-2004 06:29 AM

I have been content with my little X one. I don't see myself needing anything bigger.

Try www.wilde-ideas.com for some of the best prices around on Xyron and Xyron refills.

On occasion, www.joann.com will offer a 40% coupon as you hit the homepage; it's not applicable to certain products, like "Crop In Style", so check the fine print.

Another good thing at joann.com is when the coupon code is applied to the price of the product, it not only reduces the price, but the S & H goes down, too and is calculated on the sale price not the original price!!!!! 8)

ilove2stamp2001 10-06-2004 06:39 AM

YES!!! You need a Xyron. I have the 510 and it is so great to use for so many purposes. If you are doing the dryer sheet technique, no more messy adhesives to get the sheets to stick to the cardstock. Laminate color charts for cusomers. Magnetic bookmark cards go through the Xyron. :) Can you tell that I LOVE mine?

It's also fantastic when you are doing swaps or large amounts of cards. I just run my pieces through the Xyron and peel and stick! :)

I hate my 500...it gets adhesive everywhere (front, back, sides...I've tried everything). You might want to look at other models.

CreativeDiva 10-06-2004 07:20 AM

I just got the 510 (which wasn't even on my radar until everyone on this site kept raving about it), and I LOVE it!
I used it the same day I got it, just to see what it was like... made life so much easier!!
I have the I'm Here set and I stamped the letters, put it through the xyron, and then stamped out the individual letters that I needed and glued them on the card!! So much easier than having to glue each dot individually!!

blondgirl 10-06-2004 07:52 AM

I purchased the 500 from Michaels with my coupon and hated it. Got sticky gunk all over. Returned and purchased the 510. Then I checked Wilde Ideas and found the same machine for $20 less than I paid at Michaels with my 40% off coupon. Needless to say I returned that one and purchased from Wilde. The 510 was a kit with a half size sample of all their refills for $39. I had paid $59 at Michaels (regular price $99). The 510 refill was an improvement over the 500. The stickyness was a major complaint with that one.

melfrank1 10-06-2004 08:23 AM

YES - you need one :D I have the 510 and LOVE it! I like being able to do a card front if I want to cover the entire thing in glitter. Like someone else said, I don't use it everyday, but I am really glad I have it! I also got mine on JoAnn.com with the 40% off coupon.

Absolutely one of the best buys I ever made. I have the "X" and the 510, and LOVE them both!

cot10girl 10-06-2004 10:41 AM

Anyone else out there with a preference for the 500 as opposed to the 510?

Do you need air? I have the 510 and the 900 (I make checkbook covers that wouldn't fit through the 510). I use the 510 to make shipping labels from stamps.com. SOOO much easier and neater than trying to tape down a printed label.

As for the excess stickiness... a minor inconvenience easily remedied with a quick rub with an adhesive eraser.

afancycat 10-06-2004 11:57 AM

THANKS, JulieHRR for the tip about wilde-ideas!! I had my Michael's ad where they have the 510 on sale this week for $59.99....but I just bought it online at wilde-ideas for $29.88!! YEA!!

stampinthyme 10-06-2004 12:02 PM

Well you guys sold me on one, I just got home with a 510 and my heart set on the 900. I can hardly wait to play after supper.

This stuff is addictive. But I also got to pick up the new rubber stamper and papercrafts mags, too.

Another late night in the craft room....

check Office Depot

I bought the "back to school" organizational box this weekend for $29.99
It was up front with the Crane stationary.

The box contains:

Xyron 503, (photo and printer enhancement system)
takes 18' two sided laminate, 7' laminate/magnet. Came with 1 18' two-sided cartridge.

Dyma Letra Tag QX50 electronic label mater. Came with 13 feet of 1/2 inch pearl tape

Dymo Letra Tag iron on fabric labels spool

5 heavy shiny 2 pocket folders (the type I paid $1 each on sale during back to school)

AND......

a pack of assorted glow color rule index cards.

Very strange combination, but cheaper than Michaels with a coupon and I now have a label maker to boot. Just the thing for my type A 5 year old.

I've never seen Xyron in Office Depot so this must be a Dymo promotion.

Soozie4Him 10-06-2004 05:26 PM

It's me again, Susan, the original poster! I bought a Xyron 510 at Joann's today - they were 40% off, an "unadvertised special". I didn't need my coupon!!

But I want to know if the one parsnip got at Office Depot is just as good as the 510??

I'm not sure--when I opened the box this evening it lists part numbers for the cartridges which don't show up on the Xyron site. There is no part number listed for adhesive, so I'm going to be peeved if it doesn't take adhesive.

I emailed product support at Xyron to find out.

Then checked www.wilde-ideas.com and their 510 refill page indicates the 510's work in the 503 and 505. We'll see.

Cheers,

You guys are terrible. Now I want one! And I didn't even know what this really was before I read this...Crap. Another thing I don't have, but need now that i see the replies to this.

MD Plover 10-06-2004 09:15 PM

I really thought these were just for laminating - so please explain to me how you are getting sticky pages etc. Is it that you would need to run paper through it twice if you wanted to laminate and only once if you want sticky backing ? Help please since you have already said we "need" this - it seems interesting - yet I do need to know how to use

Novell 10-06-2004 10:05 PM

I have the little X and the 250. Love them both!

Sereikastamper 10-07-2004 04:14 AM

Watercolor your image, run FACE DOWN through the Xyron, the "smoosh" into glitter. I "flick" the back with my fingers to knock off the excess. Check this in my gallery - it shows the glitter...

HTH,
Debbi

ps - I have the 250 and love it.....one day I'm sure I'll NEED a bigger one!

spammie 10-07-2004 05:42 AM

Is the Xyron adhesive sticky enough to hold beads instead of glitter?

JAMom 10-07-2004 06:17 AM

I've never tried it myself but the word on the street is that xyron does not hold beads, just not sticky enough.

HTH,
Angie

I'm thinking this means there is a paper backing to peel off. Your card is gorgeous :D :D . I love that set and I think it is one that I would even consider stealing. LOL

So what else can I do with this thing. My hubby very kindly bought it for me now I have to show him what I can do! He is great when it comes to this, he never ?'s an order or says don't you think you have enough!

Thanks again, I really like your wording " now lets all smoosh together"
Yeah thats it baby.

Cheers,
Lisa

If you get a 510 or 900 (my fave!), there are different catridges. One is for laminate, one for repositionable adhesive, one for permanent adhesive, one for laminate front/magnet back, etc.

HTH!

Thank you so much for that information - now I will have to really check this out - this site is bad you all keep telling about more goodies

cot10girl 10-08-2004 06:34 AM

I did it! I ordered the 510 from http://www.wilde-ideas.com
Thanks, Julie, posting the site. Can't wait for it to arrive so I can PLAY! :P

spammie 10-08-2004 06:42 AM

I was thinking about getting the 510 from Wilde Ideas but couldn't make up my mind about the add-ons. Should I get just the little sticker maker or should I add the sticker maker value pack???

michellenstamps 10-08-2004 06:42 AM

SOLD, SOLD, SOLD!!! Thanks for all the great info. I will be ordering mine TODAY! Can't wait,
Michelle

cot10girl 10-08-2004 06:55 AM

I ordered the 510 with the Sticker Maker and an extra adhesive cartridge. I thought the Sticker Maker would be a fun Christmas gift for my brother-in-law's family (kids aged 11, 9 & 6). I have a feeling it won't make it out of my house....
