Default Question Regarding Cardstock and Mixed Media: Watercolor Distress Markers and Foil

Hello!
I'm new here and this is my first post. I'm excited to be a part of this community. I have been crafting for many years, but I am just beginning to venture into media surrounding stamping.

I am planning to make some art for my daughters nursery. My plan is to use heat reactive foil on thick cardstock (100 lb plus). I was searching for a great color, but couldn't find what I was looking for.... so I decided that I would try to watercolor the cardstock with Distress Markers (pretty colors and versatile for other purposes) to get a pretty watercolored background for the foil art.

The problem I am running into is that the cardstock needs to be smooth for the foil to adhere properly and smoothly (a tutorial I saw recommended My Favorite Things Smooth White Cardstock for it's smooth quality when working with heat reactive foil).

I know that watercoloring can warp regular cardstock, but my concern is that textured watercolor paper willl not work with the foiling technique.

Any recommendations for smooth cardstock or watercolor paper that will work for both water coloring and using heat reactive foil?

Thanks!!

Hi and welcome to Splitcoast!

The smoothest watercolor paper you'll find will be hot press - have you tried the hot press Fabriano? That's what I use because it's smooth enough to stamp on. Arches has some beautiful hot press too.

I wonder if Strathmore Mixed Media paper with the vellum surface would work. I got a 15 sheet tablet of that at Michaels and it says for wet or dry media.

Fabriano Artistico hot pressed is the best watercolor paper. It is very smooth and comes in two colors. Traditional White and Extra White. It is a little expensive but very well worth the cost.

Great suggestion Kathy. It's pretty smooth watercolor paper, and easy on the wallet too. I find it to be the closest substitute for Tim Holtz watercolor paper, and it's so much cheaper.

Thanks for all of your input everyone. I'm going to try out a few of the suggestions, but I've also started to consider printing a watercolor digital scrapbook paper instead... The new challenges are deciding which to do, and if I go with printing, then finding a paper that works with both inkjet printing and laser printing!!! :-/
