Here are some instructions, and a photo, of two types that I did at a recent workshop. The design for mine ended up as a cut about 1/3 from the top. You'll want to remind people to place images for the top on the top 1/3 and anything they want to see when the top is slid on must be placed on the lower 1/3 of the envelope. The grocery bag style is great for items with depth like candies or other small objects while the flat, crimped style is best for gift or other cards. Best of luck!
A Bag-a-lope is little bag (grocery bag shape) made from an envelope. You'll seal it, stamp it, then cut it in half and have two pockets to expand into a little bag and a cover.
- Seal your envelope.
- Orient envelope portrait style and stamp on both sides with desired images.
- Cut in half across the short length (decorative scissors optional).
Crimped version (right):
- Insert the long side of the bag bottom into the crimper and crimp. This will shorten the width of the bag allowing you to fit it more easily into the top. Jump to step 13.
Folded Bag version (left) (great for small treats like candies since its got depth)
- For the bottom half, on each side except the cut one, make a fold of to toward the center.
- These folds will work best if you fold them both forward and back for a strong crease.
- Now, put 2-3 fingers of one hand into the open part of the envelope to expand it.
- With the other hand, push the bottom of the envelope UP toward the inside until it hits the crease lines you made.
- This will end up being the flat part of the bottom of your little bag.
- As you flatten out the bottom, the side creases you made on the envelope allow it to open up.
- You should end up with a triangle shaped piece on each bottom corner of the bag. Just fold those under the bag and glue or tape them in place.
- Fold the side creases back in towards the inside of the bag, like the sides of a grocery bag or gift bag.
All
- Insert the gift card and slide the other half (top) over the open end.
- Tie closed with a ribbon, if desired.
