To further the lengthy conversation and opinions about "what could happen"--has anyone REALLY ever been sued or reprimanded by SU for copyright infringement???????????
I have no doubt that SU! has had occasion to crack down legally on a number of occasions where individuals have willfully/knowingly violated their copyright.
However, as Jeanne said, I highly doubt such information would be released publicly.

Actually, the court records are often public. At least the initial filing documents are. You can get them by (1) going to the courthouse, (2) looking them up online (if the jurisdiction offers this), or (3) paying a service to obtain them. However, you'd have to know where SU sued, meaning what state and what county, unless you want to do a full legal search. You can also use legal search engines like Westlaw to do a courts search for you (it's a paid subscription). However, the settlement documents are usually not filed with the court, so finding the actual disposition of the case is much harder. That being said, I have no idea how often SU has sued, if they've sued, or what, and I don't have plans to look!
There actually is/was a stituation where SU had to protect it's copyrighted images.
Georgia Pacific had printed some napkins & possibly some other paper goods with an image that belonged to SU. I don't know what the outcome was/is, but I do know that SU actively pursued them through the legal system.

Oh, yeah. That was a recent occurrence . . .
A number of years ago, they had to pursue legal action against someone manufacturing metal trays, I think it was, with one of their images. I don't recall all the details . . .

I'm not asking for names, just a description of the type of situation...
I do know personally of a few instances where a popular stamp company's images were being reproduced in the form of counterfeit stamps for the purposes of resale.
Unfortunately, deliberate copyright infringement occurs more frequently than folks want to believe. If a company isn't vigilant about protecting their copyrights, they can suffer considerable losses of sales, damage to their company's reputation, etc.

It is very likely that legal counsel for SU sends a great many "cease and desist" letters to purported trademark and copyright infringers (small and large) -- most instances of this type are disposed of without having to sue.
I saw on the internet that SU filed a suit against GP in December for copyright infringement under the Intellectual Property provision. CTMH had some of their own cases listed against a couple of companies also. So, yes, SU does take action when they feel their rights have been violated.

You know, my daughter's Daisy troop must have a package of those napkins - every week I look at them and think that the flower on them looks just like the one from Fresh Flowers.
