It is a good Q b/c deco can be used hot as well as cold.

I am NO expert but I am going to say no.
Deco foil as I understand it is a "transfer" foil. Meaning it needs to stick to/transfer to something like toner sheets, gel, the toner from your printer if you have the right kind, etc.

What I saw in Glimmer demos was just the plate, their foil and the CS. No adhesive layer. Maybe it is "built in" to their foil?

I am going to email them tomorrow to ask what other brands of foil if any, can be used with a glimmer bc I was thinking about one. I will let you know what I hear.

It seems to me that the deco foil you use in your laminater and the ginak, spellbinders, crafters companion foil you use in your foil press machine. off the top of my head I do not remember the exact brand names but, its what she said, the deco foil is a transfer one and the others are (mind just went blank)

but, what I found is that the foils that you run through the machines, they do not flake as much as the deco foils.

There is no toner with the Glimmer Hot Foil Machine.  It heats the plate or die, then the foil is added and pressed into the paper with the die cutting machine.  Like Stacy is saying, it is rolled through the machine.  The foils are different.  Possibly the Gemini foil would work but I have only used the Spellbinders foil, but the processes are the same I think, at least the plates look the same.

I did email Spellbinders and am waiting on an answer. Might be next week due to holiday.

I would LOVE to see a chart on foils...this machine uses these brands, this one uses these...you can do x technique with this type/brands...It is very confusing to me. I googled around and I dont see anything like that.

Foils can be divided into heat-reactive and toner-reactive categories.

Both kinds of foil can be used with a dry/tacky adhesive (liner tape, tape runner, hot glue, sticky embossing powder, label sheet, tacky-when-dry glue or medium, etc).

Otherwise...

Heat-reactive foils
--brands: Spellbinders, Crafter's Companion, We R Memory Keepers
--need a heated die and pressure to transfer.
--generally requires a hot foiling system, such as Spellbinders Glimmer, Gemini FoilPress, along with a die cutting machine (Foilpress requires Gemini/Jr.)

Toner-reactive foils
--Deco Foil (Thermoweb), Minc/Heidi Swapp
--need heat, pressure (laminator can be used), and a toner based medium to stick to.
--inexpensive, easy to personalize if you have access to a laser printer or copier

Yay! Glad it was helpful.

I've been saving my scraps of Spellbinders foil to apply to polymer clay - a little burnishing and a quick tear-away... really pretty results!

SB got back to me-although Dina already answered the Q

Thank you for contacting us!

Unfortunately, the Deco foil is not a thermal foil and therefore will not work with our Glimmer Hot Foil System. The Deco foil is for use with Deco adhesives and applications.

The foils we offer are thermal activated, which means that heat activates the foil to transfer the image onto your substrate.

You can use Couture Creations foil, You can also use Foil Quill foils and Gemini Foilpress foils. These are all thermal foils, which means that heat activates the foil to transfer the image onto your substrate.

Other popular foils like ThermoWeb and Minc are toner based and will not work in this system. This machine does not use a toner to adhere the foil.

I am confused by the statement that Deco Foil is not thermal activated. I use Deco Foil to transfer to laser toner in my laminator. That's heat, right?

Yes, but it also requires whatever is in the toner or ink. The Deco Foil will not work with a machine like the glimmer which only uses heat and pressure.
