I have a good friend that loves buy SU and CTMH. I know that the State of PA's sales tax is based on NET and includes shipping so when she gets free merchendise she is not charge sales tax unless she goes over the amount of free dollars. (SU policy)
I was looking over her CTMH order and they charged her sales tax on her free stuff and her free stamp of the month. Not to start trouble but is this right?
I never understood this when I was a CTMH customer, which is a big part of why I am no longer a customer. I don't know why one company does not charge tax on free stuff, and the other one does. If SU was doing something wrong, I'm sure they would have gotten in trouble long ago! They have been doing business like this for 20 years!! I'd like to believe that CTMH is paying too much sales tax to the states, and not that they are just pocketing the extra. Either way, I didn't like paying tax on free stuff, so I stopped shopping with them. Just my $.02.
I don't remember the exact reason why, but I do know that if you get a discounted stamp set from CTMH, that you pay sales tax on the discounted amount. But if you earn it for free you have to pay sales tax on the full retail value. Apparently they are charged sales tax on the full retail amount or something like that. Sorry I can't explain it better.
Here in PA they are only required to collect sales tax on the net amount so if a stamp is free there isn't sales tax. When they pay the tax to the state they should pay what they owe based on the net sales. If that is the case what do they do with the extra money? Maybe its just easier for them to collect it for all things but personally I like the fact that SU does that extra mile to help where ever they can.
Ok, call me OCD but this really is bothering me so I went to the Department of Revenue of PA to see how sales tax is supposed to be collected. It states that if a new purchase price has been established, the sales tax is based on the new amount. Therefore, since the free items are now $0 there is no sales tax based on that amount. So, she got charged sales tax for the free SOTM at $1.37 and her free items at $.90. On the hostess sheet they will charge correctly if its at the 50% discount so why do they charge the full amount at the free stuff? Based on one sale, she was over charged $2.20. Thats alot and can add up!
There was a short period of time that PA did charge tax on hostess benefits. Then they went back to not charging (miracles do happen). Maybe CTMH or that demo did not get the news.
Considering that when, as a demo, I put in an order it auto calculates, just like SU! does, this appears to be a glitch in the computer system, and not the fault of the demo. It would give the demo a customer-by-customer total, with tax and shipping, and she should then be able to compare her math to the computer's math to verify she charged correctly. Here in CO, everything is taxed, including "free" merchandise.
Is that a pink motor scooter? Sorry to highjack the thread, but I saw this once before and didn't have time to ask. If so, let me know the details. I've been thinking of getting a scooter.

Yup! It's a Buddy. Mine is a 125CC scooter, which means technically you need a motorcycle license and license for the bike, as well as insurance. However, you can get into a 49CC and not need all of that. It is basically a motorized bike. I love it!
