creating 'the ocean'
Hi everyone,
I wanted to make some cards with an 'ocean background'. I have a bubbles (fish like) stamp and the devine swirls cuttlebug embossing folder.
I am trying to think of an idea that would really 'pop' with something that looks like waves shimmering. Then I would place my image on this background. But I really want the background to take centre stage and not cover up a lot of it. Fishy Friends or Sea Life would be used as the image(s) in some part of the card.
I thought of trying to draw some waves, but my doodling/drawing sucks.
Any ideas that you have found works well??
Denise, thanks!

I know Kittie makes awesome waves with Liquid Applique. If you want them to shimmer, maybe you could sprinkle on some glitter before you heat it.

Hi Denise!
These are two cards I made with an ocean..they certainly are not anything special by any means but I thought you might be able to combine the ideas or even change them to come up with something that would work with the direction you are going with the card you want to create. I remember seeing an awesome, awesome ocean sometime within the last few months and I wish I could remember who did it. I will look in my favs in case I saved it and come back here if I did! Good luck with what you decide to do. I would love to see it when you are done!

Here is a card I did with trying to make an ocean... Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
I just rubbed the white craft ink on the torn edge to make a wave. You could easily emboss it then too, with the irridescent ice to add the sparkles. hope that helps

I have one by luvs2stamp4ever in my favorites. I've never had any luck linking to a gallery item, but can do pages, so here's her gallery (the card is midway down the page).

I made this ocean by tearing a piece of computer paper and sponging with various blues as I moved the torn edge from place to place:

You girls are awesome!!
Wow. I knew I could count on you girls to come up with ocean ideas. They are excellent suggestions. Which one to choose now?? I was wondering about taking the idea with the torn pieces of paper and sponging with versamark instead of ink. Then going over with different shades of Pearl-ex to get the poppin' pearl look?? I love all your ideas!!!
Keep' em comin!

I got 2 cards made (will post tomorrow); For one, I stamped on cool carribean with a 'bubble stamp' in Versamark. Then went over it with 3 different blues from my Pearl-ex stash. I must say, it turned out fabulous. I'm going to try a few of the techniques suggested on this thread for my other cards, as I have several 'ocean-themed' cards to make.
I also did a card using the blue vellum idea and ran it through the cuttlebug with the Devine Swirls embossing folder. It looks pretty cool. Too bad the rest of the card doesnt!! LOL!!!!

I'm a little late on responding to this since you have your cards made but I'm still going to post a couple to give you some ideas.
Ocean Waves 1 2 3
I accomplished the swirl shape by sponging and twisting the sponge at the same time. Then I just add a little LA and heat. I have made some that I sponged versa on or pened it on and then added iridescent ice on for a touch of shimmer. Then added a little LA for foam.

Here's a little different idea for an "ocean" effect that I recently did for a reverse masking technique challenge:

I've had good luck making waves with the Fiskars plates for dry embossing and shaving cream technique always looks ocean-y if you use good reinker colors.

I have an A Muse Mermaid stamp I want to do this with! My problem is I don't have any reinkers and I do have a cuttlebug and the fiskars ocean plate but can't figure out how to make the instructions work.

my little waves...
Hi Denise,
I used the swirls embossing folder to make the background on two of my cards - on the silly sealife I cut the paper sort of following the "swirls" to make waves, and in the shadowbox I also cut sections and layered them to give it a bit more depth.. (oh and I added dazzling diamonds on some of the edges for added *bling*
Whaley
Ahoy Matey
hope they help!
