When you do an altered clipboard, is there any way to get the "clip" part up so that you can get the paper cleanly underneath it? They don't look like normal screws.
I get that I could use an exacto knife or something to cut around it, but that is more tedious and error prone.
My husband has heavy wire. He has twisted a piece of it so I can use it to hold the clip open. It works!
Thanks, but I'm not wondering how to hold the clip open. What I'm wondering is can you get the clip off entirely so you have a nice flat surface, and then reattach it after everything is done...
After what seems like hours of Googling, I found some blog posts from 2009/2010 that said Michaels carries a clipboard with removable hardware. On the Michael's web site I couldn't find it. Will hunt next time I'm near one of their stores.
If the clipboards look anything like ones I have, they are a type of rivet holding the clip in place, and you wont get them out, without prizing the edges up, then you would need new rivets (and rivet gun) to put it back together. It would probably also damage the board. Sorry Marge, I don't think its do-able.
Michaels carries clip boards with removable hardware. They have little phillips head screws -- not the rivets like most clip boards. UPC # 400100373057, ArtMinds 9x12 Clip Board, $3.49.
They only had 1 left in stock and I used my 50% coupon on it -- but they said they could order as many as I needed.
I tested it with a phillips head screwdriver and it comes off no problem.
Those are cool! Unfortunately you need saws and such. But a really cool look. And who knew you could buy just the hardware on Amazon? (Is there anything you can't buy on Amazon?)

FWIW Lowes will cut down hardboard. They do the first three cuts on a sheet free here. I had some cut down to make artboards beats paying $50 each for the same thing from artist supply shop... I didn't have time to shop around.
OK so I decoupaged floral napkins on to my altered clipboard. It's done!
The second photo shows a closer-up of the removable phillips head screws for the hardware. I actually used Krylon glitter spray on the metal. Not sure if you can tell, but IRL it is glimmery.
Not super fancy but it was my test. It is so easy to get the coverage when the hardware is off.
That is really beautiful. It makes me want to make some even though I have no idea what I'd use them for!
Yeah, I know right? ;-)
Years ago I made one but I made the mistake of making the front too 'bumpy' with beads and buttons and such. It was lovely but not functional as a writing surface. This one, I kept flat and also decoupaged the back - which is what most people see when you are holding it. So it can actually be used.
Ideally I would like a smaller clipboard (say 5x7 size) and do the front, put a big sheet magnet on the back and put it on the fridge to clip coupons, notes, etc to. I do have some smaller clipboards (a little bigger than 5x7 but not the full 9x12 size) but they have the riveted hardware. I've had them for maybe 7-8 years and they haven't been used yet. I might need to use them and make fridge note holders for everyone I know...I've never used them in part because I didn't want to fuss with maneuvering around the top hardware.
One nice thing about the Michael's one which has the phillips head screws is that not only did it make the surface easier to do, but when I had it off I could spray paint it (with the glitter spray) but off course you could use any color. Then it goes back together all nice and neat.
