Child Hand Print
 

OK - I immediately thought the best palce to ask this question would be the SCS experts! I wanted to make a hand print of my 2 boys hands to put on a candle for their Grandma for mother's day. What is the best ink or paint to use? I know it would have to be waterproof - I just know that my ink pads I have now would not come off their little hands so easily!

Any advice as to where to purchase the ink would be great too!

I have used Versamark and embossed the image.
I did it for tiles for Cam's 1st Christmas here for grandparents-stamped his hand in VM and embossed in detail silver :D

What a good idea and how sweet, I am a handprint fanatic with my son, he likes stamping his hand in all the cards we send family and the grandparents. I use the memories pad, since it washes off easier, but I don't know if would work well using it on a candle. My husband wanted to surprise me and handstamp my son's hand in my card last year for Mother's Day, he didn't know I use the little memories pad, so he figured out how to open my Eggplany Envy pad and oh my goodness he had it all over our son and that is much, harder to get off. Yeah it was atleast sweet that my hubby tried :wink: But I think that Versamark idea is something to look into. :D

I've embossed my son Marcus' hand too. You won't have to worry about them running around with inky fingers touching everything then.

i just have to share this... when i read the title of your post my first thought was OH NO she used basic black!!! my sister did this for her son's baby announcements and it took her forever and some not-so-newborn friendly cleaners to get it off :shock: so i thought that i would learn from her mistake and when i wanted to stamp my baby girls hands and feet (they are framed up in her room) i used real red.... by the time i had a satisfactory images we were both covered in red ink and i used a ton of cardstock but after a bath she came clean quite nicely with her regular baby wash and a washcloth... i think the hardest part of the whole process was trying to "unclench" her little baby fist long enough to cover with ink and stamp :roll:
have fun doing this, this post reminds me i need to attempt this with my second baby girl before she gets much bigger!

To make baby handprints for SHOW :

Preparation is key
cut many pieces of cardstock "to fit plus" a little room for off -center prints
have baby wipes open and all over the area so that they are handy
put 2-way glue on cd case and let dry for a hard post-it type surface
this way you can flip over cs that is too smudgey
put cardstock on cd case for stability and go to child
I repeat, TAKE PAPER TO CHILD
the child is asleep ( for novices )
in a hi-chair ( for advanced )
in a swing for experts who have rythm!

make a huge amount of handprints
note date and name and age
keep the best and gift the rest !
there are always people who love this tender reminder of innocence
grands, aunties, midwife, big bro or sis, friends cousins neighbours.....

SAVE CRAFT TIME FOR WHEN MESSES DON'T MATTER AND ENJOY YOUR CHILD'S ENJOYMENT
THEN USE WASHABLE EVERYTHING ! AND TAKE PHOTOS!


P.S. Do your print,or big bro or sis handprint, FIRST THEN ADD BABYPRINT....ADORABLE ! don't cry thinking about it!

Would the kid ink pads work ok? I would rather not use the memories ones as I know they would not wash off easily. I just found the washable ones in the back of the catty for kids! I think that would work best for candles. Just thought I would share my inspiration I had overnight!

As you can guess from my Signature..I sell baskets...NO, I am not trying to sell you baskets, but here is something that I give as a gift and have suggested to others to give for a great baby gift. We have something called a Kiddie Purse. It is a small basket and very cute, and it has a lid. I was just thinking maybe you really SMART, WONDERFUL stampers can take my creation and adapt it for your own uses! Please share with me what you come up with!!!

Here is the note that I suggest to use with the card you give with the Kiddie Purse!
A Special little keepsake, meant for Baby Dear...
Given as a Gift to treasure, year after year...
With tiny little footprints left inside this little Basket,
This Heirloom records the beginning... And all of the memories after it.

Here are the instructions given to the Mom/Dad:

Have the doctors and nurses at the hospital sign the bottom as well as the
visitors. Then spray with 2 coats of clear sealer. Stamped the footprints
on the inside of the lid and on the outside, put birth date, weight and length and full name on the lid. Inside is the poem, hospital bracelets, Mom and Dad bracelets etc. Later, add locks of hair, first tooth etc!
It is now a treasure basket, no longer a purse!

Here is the poem you enclose in the basket for the baby...

On this lid my footprints will go;
Don’t forget to count each toe;
Inside the lid my name will be;
Along with my birthday and weight you’ll see.
If I’m a boy, inside I’ll keep,
Baseball cards, toys, rocks and a jeep.
If I’m a girl, I think you know,
This is the place for my ribbons and bows.
Please don’t forget a lock of hair,
And my first tooth can go in there.
No one can take this Basket from me,
Because on the lid, my footprints will be.

A mom brought this to show ideas for the preschool fund raiser quilts, but I went to Amazon and bought my own! (hasn't come yet)... I look forward to using it for cards and other projects!!! It shows hand prints turned in to dalmatians, jungle animals, butterflies, flowers, hearts, SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! I was thinking of using the craft ink... won't that work? No one has mentioned that... :wink:

You'll have to let us know what that book says! I bet they know the safest ink or paint to use! I worry that craft inks pads are sometimes hard for me to get totally off my stamps - So I worry about a baby hand. Just me though!

One of my most cherished possessions is a framed poem about messy fingerprints all over stuff but here's my handprint so that you'll remember how small I was... I don't have it with me right now (it's in storage in SF), but my mother did it for me when my daughter was 6. They used a regular ink pad (like for an office! lol nearly 30 years ago... they didn't know any better) and it was Christmas Eve. They couldn't get the ink to dry on the paper so they could frame it and wrap it. Then they couldn't get the ink off her so it wouldn't blow the surprise! lol What a comedy of errors. But in the end, it was the best present my mother ever gave me.

My daughter just called me a couple of days ago to tell me she is finally pregnant after 4 years of trying. Everyone is walking on clouds... my son-in-law has not stopped smiling.

Now I can make this for her... and watch her dissolve into tears the way hers did me.

I don't have any experience with candles...but we make handprints all the time. It works best having an extra person to help, but I've done it by myself with my son in my lap or strapped into his high chair. He's almost two, and it is harder now than a year ago. I just make sure I have a good grip on his wrist, then tap his hand (or foot) against the craft pad and then stamp. (I tried with the classic ink, but it didn't clean off very easily). I keep baby wipes nearby and the craft ink wipes right off if you do it quickly.

I've embossed his handprints for my scrapbooks. I've also stamped the handprint on cardstock, then scanned it onto the computer and printed it out onto iron-on sheets for t-shirts I created for my husband and father.
