Default CASEing

I know that I may be guilty of finding inspiration from other SCSers. I always try to give credit where credit is due and if I forgot where I saw it, I say so, but will always attempt to give credit. Well...I just saw a card in the gallery that is EXACTLY one that I have done, but no casing credit given. Would you say something? For some reason I think that it is rude that this person did not.

I can never understand why you would upload an exact copy of someone's work... KWIM. I guess the best thing is to just be flattered

That happened to me recently. I left a comment that said how excited I was to see that I had been CASEd!

Oh my yes, consider yourself flattered. I've just checked....You've got a BEEUUUUUTIFUL gallery Jen!! I'm sure this person didn't do it with the intention of passing the design off as her own, some people are new here and don't know the ins and the outs of the site. Good luck, and keep making those square cards, I can see you've been on a roll this June!

Hi Jen - your gallery is gorgeous! I'd like to give you my two cents worth on your question about giving credit when casing. I wouldn't assume that the person is being rude or intentionally left out any comments about casing. Once I uploaded a card that I had made at my monthly stamp workshop at my demo's house. A fellow scs'er commented on it and said it looked familiar. I checked out her gallery and discovered a card almost exactly what I had posted. I had no idea. I guess maybe my demo used SCS for inspiration or maybe it was a card suggestion from stampin up for demos...I don't know. Bottom line is I didn't know I had cased her card. I hope she didn't think I had been rude. Consider yourself flattered if someone cases your designs. I certainly would! However, seeing the credit in the comments is also very nice too!

I don't think anyone is distraught

What I meant is that when people upload an exact copy it's a duplicate in the gallery. I think when most people case they change things up a bit (color, stamp set, embellishments). No problem with that

Whew! It wasn't me! Just kidding. When I CASE a card I usually don't put it into the gallery unless I've changed it up a bit, and I try to give credit where credit is due. If I can't remember where I saw it I just say it was CASE'd.

True. The CASEd card I saw of mine was almost an exact copy... the only difference was a different font of the sentiment.

THANK YOU so much for your input guys.
I know that the other person most likely did not CASE and not give credit intentionally. There really are no hard feelings, but it was just a little surprising to see my exact creation. There is no way I could stamp like I do if it weren't for this site. Everyone here is an inspiration to each other in one way or another and I totally recognize that. Just the fact that I get comments in my gallery and on posts like this means the world to me. Thanks so much!!!

I just checked out your gallery (I was afraid it was me...) and I saw a ton of your cards that are in my favorites! I do CASE cards from here a lot, but I usually don't upload a direct CASE. If I do find inspiration or do a CASE, I try to give credit where it is due...If I don't remember, I usually just put "cased from SCS" I don't ever intentionally CASE without credit, but lately I have found a lot of cards with very similar layouts or colors or techniques. I sometimes think we are just recreating what we see here. I know it sucks when you don't get credit...just know this, you are good enough for people to copy!
happy stamping.

I uploaded a card that I cased from my friend & gave her credit for it. A few days later, she saw it in my gallery & emailed to tell me that she had cased it from someone here on SCS. She was adamant that I find the original & give credit. So I ended up commenting on my own card, but originally I never knew that the card idea came from SCS.

I agree, make a comment saying "happy to have been cased" & see if she emails you.

I have seen cards here very similar to ones I have done at stamp club. One person cases, sends the card as a RAK to someone, that person then uses it for their 10 club and by the time someone else makes it they have no idea of the origin. I do NOT believe anyone does this on purpose. I ALSO believe it is the very highest compliment and fail to see how this could be a single bit upsetting. If you want to keep a card private, posting it on the internet is the last way in the world to do that.

This scared the begeezus out of me! Genie~ I have several of your cards in my faves, just waiting to case!!! And altho I truly don't think I EVER have an original design, I do give credit to whoever I have tried (and I do mean tried as I never can get it as good as most of you!) to case. So went back to check and...whew...I did give credit to you on my last case (the chintzy looking bunny). Glad I didn't have to hang my head in shame!!! Keep them coming~ you are an awesome stamper and should be proud to see stuff cased, credit or no credit given!!

ohhh, one more thing. I upload all my cards, simply because this is where I keep an account (so to speak) of stuff I have done. Once it is sent off to a dear one, I may want to case myself and would never be able to remember if I didn't have a picture and recipe! So maybe it's just for us "remember-ically challenged"!

I have to say - and maybe I am just overtired and pmsing - but really, as someone said above, if you want something private DON't put it on the internet for goodness sake!! I have CASED many a card, there are only a definite number of stamp sets and even few colours, I do not upload often - mostly because I am scanner challenged, but I really think that you should be flattered- I understand that this is art - but .....
I will stop now- think it might be pms I do like your gallery and wondering where do you get your square envelopes?

I will chime in with the "great Gallery"... and THAT my dear is WHY you were CASED! I will also say that I think CASEing should be done with freedom of crediting... I mean it's nice when you can do it... but it's called CASEing "Copy And Share Everything" not "Copy then ask for permission", or "copy and Credit" or "Copy after you ask nicely"!

I wouldn't be anything but complimented.

Default well.....

I just have to post here- CASE'in is one thing- what do you think of this..... SOmeone posted a RAC that they had rec'd and it was a card I sent to someone else!!! It is making it's way around the USA!!! It was made with a Technique Junkies background, it was 'unique', so I knew it was my card!!! I guess that is kinda the same thing as someone uploading your exact card, and not giving you credit....HUH???

wow, i never expected so much input. first, thank you for the compliments, as they are very much appreciated. second, to chime in on the comment about not posting to internet. that is a good point, and i must say that i agree. i don't want my stuff private. i love to see what others have to share and i love to share my stuff. i just think that if you are going to take someone's EXACT idea, give them credit (that goes for anything-if it is not your 'intellectual property', say so). I am certainly flattered that someone copied it. I guess I feel like I am offending some people here, and that was not my intention at all.

No offense taken!!! I understand why people get upset when this happens... so some stampers their cards are like little babies they send off into the world! It's just not how I feel about it... I'm "free and easy" that way.

That's why I never re-RAK my RAKs! I keep them all, unless I need a card and don't have time to make one, but that would only be for a family member or close friend.

This totally made me laugh. I didn't realize the OP's name was Jen also, so I thought...why is this person complimenting Jen70's gallery on someone else's post? And FURTHERMORE, who on SCS *doesn't know* that Jen70 has a freakin' AWESOME gallery? *LoL* **note to self: must start paying attention!**

Now, to the OTHER Jen (Gen?)...you got CASEd because that card ROCKS! Your card caught my eye this morning...and I studied it carefully (cuz I have that set coming soon!). Anyway...I can totally see why someone would CASE it...but, like you, I always give credit where credit is due. And credit is due on practically EVERYTHING in my gallery, cuz I have a hard time coming up with my "own" ideas...because everyone on this site is so darn creative. It makes my stuff look inadequate, yanno?

But it also makes me wonder...is anything really "original?" What are the chances that two people could come up with the exact same card? I don't think that happened in this case...just wondering though.

First, I just have to say that Jen, your cards are incredible! I think I just added about a dozen to my favorites and I'm not done yet! I can honestly see why you'd be case'd. I agree that I would not upload an exact CASE, but what exactly, it considered a CASE? I mean, I often see a layout I like, and I use it, but with different stamps, and a different theme. I try to say where I got my inspiration, but certainly there's dozens of other cards similar. Is that a CASE? Many of the cards I make are put together because I saw a ribbon tied this way, or embellishments used that way, or eyelets used untraditionally, etc. Is that CASE'd? Anyway, Jen, the person that CASE'd your card probably innocently forgot to give credit, or didn't know any better, but I like Jen70's suggestion of thanking the CASE'r. Again, your cards are beautiful!

This has happened to me. The most recent one I sent to a friend and she sent it to someone else. I saw it in the gallery and clicked on it since I didn't recognize the name. It turned out that the person I sent it to regifted it. HOWEVER, she must have written something on the back of the card because the recipient said it was stamped by me. LOL I thought it was funny. I can see how it happens though. It didn't bother me. I figure if I want the recipient to keep it, I write in it. If I stick a post it in there, it's hers to do with as she pleases.

Good questions raised...
Is there such a thing as an original idea?
What constitutes casing?

My opinions...
My DH and I have had this conversation about original ideas (not pertaining to stamping) and maybe there is no such thing anymore. Maybe there is. If you did not come up with it on your own, I don't think that there is any shame in saying so though. An above poster said they got the chintzy rabbit idea from me. I think that is an inspiration point, not a case. My opinion of a case is making an identical product. There are only so many ways to layout paper. I look at other galleries to try to get layout ideas. Sometimes I use them, sometimes I twist them, but is that caseing? I don't copy their card. Maybe I am in the wrong here. Let me know what you think.

Jen,
I completely understand how you feel. A while back, I made a very special mini album for my husbands grandma. She had just found out she had breast cancer, and I created something especially for her as a way of letting her know how much she was loved. I posted it on another site. Shortly afterward, someone else posted a mini album, claiming it too was for their grandmother with cancer...and it was so copied from what I had done, that it was obvious she had copied. I have absolutely no problem with someone copying my ideas. That's what happens when you are willing to post your stuff. But it is upsetting when they do so without even mentioning that they cased or got the idea from you. I guess the only way to completely avoid it is to refuse to post your creations. I love posting my work, so that isn't even an option I would consider. It's just bad manners not to admit when your ideas are copied. It gives the impression that the person is trying to take credit for something that isn't theirs. I just wanted to add my 2 cents to let you know that I share your frustration. You have an incredible style, and I look at it this way. People can copy all they want, but they can never steal your own unique style! I am so glad that you are willing to share your ideas here. People like you are what makes SCS such a great site!

But isn't that the whole reason that many cards are RAKed with a post it note inside- so it can be sent out again?

hey you are totally right -and I was totally not offended, but I just think I have such an array of other things to worry about in my life!! I barely have time to make cards these days, so I just want to thank everyone on here for all the great ideas I have totally stolen and given to others and taken credit - I guess, cause I never said I didn't think it all up in my own head!! I hope everyone had a great day off and is enjoying some sunshine!

I read this thread earlier with some interest, but had decided not to post to it, since all the different POV's seemed to be well-discussed. However, I just paid a visit to the gallery, only to discover that the TLC challenge for today was to incorporate paper-weaving - coincidence number one - since I have two cards sitting here, among my stash, with woven paper involved; done well in advance of today's challenge; waiting to be uploaded later this month when I finally get a digital camera for my birthday in 2 weeks' time.

Well, it gets even better. When I saw Bensarmom's Basket of LLS daisies, I couldn't believe the coincidence, since one of my cards uses the very same concept, and we even used the same stamps in very similar ways, and yet both cards are distinctively different. I guess, maybe, we're on the same wavelength, as far as coming up with similar concepts. However, my card was made over three weeks ago, when I just got the LLS set, before it was retired at the end of May, and I know that she couldn't have copied me, since my card has yet to be posted!

When I have used someone else's idea, I always try to give credit, or at least, mention that it was inspired, if the idea was sparked by another source, other than my own grey matter. I don't mind if someone uses any of my ideas, but I do prefer when they acknowledge doing so. Now, herein lies my dilemma: If and when, I do get around to posting it, will I be accused of not giving credit, where credit is due, even though I generated my own idea? I would really like some input on this, because it is not my intention to step on anyone's feet.

Annie
