Just curious, what set has been an active set for the longest time for SU? I know there are a lot of trivia junkies out there. My guess is Lovely as a Tree.
This is a good question. I wonder about this kind of thing, too. Not that we would ever be told this, but I'd love to know what stamp set sold the fewest, or what colors were the least popular. Not just for SU, either.
Am I the only one who wonders about stuff like this?
According to Cat's spreadsheet, Lovely as a Tree has been in the catalog since 2001-02. The next longest running sets are from the 2005-06 catalog and they are Loads of Love, Loads of Love Accessories and the two coordinating wheels, Tailgating and Time for a Tree.
When I started buying Stampin' Up, Button Bear/Bow Bear seemed to be among the core sets. It seems like Button Bear was in the catalog for a long time.

Diane is right - the longest running CURRENT sets are the ones she listed, with Lovely as a tree being ten years old with the current catalog.
The longest running RETIRED set was Nice & Easy Notes which appeared in eleven catalogs before it retired.
Itty Bitty Backgrounds HAS to be up there too! Mine has a copyright of 1997 and I know it retired very recently...can't grab last couple years' catlogs to check right this minute though.
Button Bear was a juggernaut....i remember at one convention they JOKINGLY said that he'd retire and the crowd of demos FREAKED OUTTTTT!! LOL He lasted a couple more catalogs
Stella wasn't in that long as I recall.
Lovely as a Tree and Nice & Easy Notes, yeah, those and Itty Bitty Backgrounds were/are old old oldtimers ;)
I also immediately thought of Lovely as a Tree. But I don't know why, as I am really tired of it. I guess it is a classic though and clearly enough people still buy it.

I thought Loads of Love had to be up there! I just loved it a first but never bought it. I was looking at it in the catty this morning and thought I was tired of it and never even owned it!

Very very interesting and I gotta say.......I love this Trivia!
thanks to all for your efforts in this.......I keep coming back and reading
more! hehehehe

well, we could certainly make assumptions based on the retiring stamps, couldn't we?
of the more than 3000 SU! sets, there are 289 sets that appeared just once in a regular catalog and a whopping 562 that only appeared twice (excluding sets released this year); my guess is that they didn't sell well, so were quickly retired.
I would guess Lovely As A Tree. It's the only set I can think of that has remained in the catty for as long as I have been a SU customer - over 6 years now.
a little more details? i went back and checked again ;)
itty, bitty, backgrounds WAS the longest running set - thirteen years. i don't know how i missed that.
the snowflakes wheel ran for 12 years before it retired - clearly a long-runner!
stella stamper only appeared in two catalogs, retiring with the 00/01 catalog
button bear appeared in seven catalogs before retiring in 2003.
Yay!! Feels good to be right ;) Thanks for re-checking, Cat!!
I have all of those BTW!! ;) heheh.
I started with SU! as a customer in 99, demo in 2001...if you want some laughs, go look at the catties and magazines from those times. It's like looking at the "awkward stage" photos of yourself in grade school. HAHAH!!
PP, I feel the same way about Loads of Love...always wanted it, never got it cause it's limited use but soo cute anyway. Now I'm tired of it too it seems.
On the single year or two year only sets, I always predicted those fairly well because the "One Hit Wonders" are usually the very specific (i.e. all cows or clowns or whatever, or a very particular drawing style that doesn't appeal to everyone) as well as the pet sets. Those change every year or two! Check all the dog and cat sets, none lasts long but there is always one available.
I've only been stamping with SU! since 2002 (joined a S10 club in 2006 and really began to get into stamping) I have Lovely as a Tree (I manage to use that set every holiday on at least one card design). I also have Loads of Love, which I like to use for masculine cards; I should probably buy the accessories set before it retires; and I also have IB Backgrounds, even though I never really got into background stamping, so it hasn't gotten used much. Oh!, and before I forget Frosty was my first ever stamp set purchased at my first workshop as an attendee. I don't think I'll ever part with any of the sets I've mentioned. They're just too classic in my opinion.
My friend works with machine embroidery- she enlightened me about artists- this would prob apply to SU as well. There are artists that sell their work to Sewing machine companies- I imagine SU buys art as well.
So artists limit their designs to a certain amout of time- must be retired after a year or two- that would explain why some sets that seem to be hot sellers are retired after just a year or two.......
Lovely as a Tree was my first stamp purchase. It is still a go to for many of my card designs. When I have a mental block and need a card for anything I can always come up with something with the trees. Good for everything - men, women, sympathy, get well, birthday, friendship.
Has anyone else noticed that there are at least two old sets, Autumn Days and Heard from the Heart that are now also available in clear mount? When I noticed it I immediately turned to Lovely as a Tree to see if it too was available in clear mount. To my dissapointment it isn't. I would have popped for a second set in clear mount. Instead that is my next unmount project. If I ruin it I can still replace it. Those trees are just too good to let go.
