They're served year-round at a few restaurants - but not many. I've had both. Escargot/snails were OK some times and not my fav others. Have to say that I LOVE the garlic butter they came in. And my M-I-L LOVES frog legs so we took her to a restaurant in town that serves them. They were actually tasty but REALLY messy to eat. (And it's true - kind of like dark meat on chicken, but stronger flavored). And again - loaded with garlic butter. Sense a common theme here?
when my mom ordered them just ate the garlic butter.
i was wondering anyways... those little stinkers swimm in garlic butter ... so do the people actually order the snails or the sauce :-)
In Texas I was invited to a friend's house for fried frog legs. He went "frog gigging" at a local lake and caught them himself. They were okay and were like white meat fried chicken. Didn't eat much just because of the thought of what they were - maybe if I had a few drinks first I could have enjoyed them! Not sure about this?
Yeah, it's like Bill Murray says..."tastes like chicken..." ;)
I've eaten frog legs once...on my honeymoon I recall. They were okay, but if I want to eat something that tastes like chicken, I'll eat chicken.
Escargot? Had 'em...can't say I really care for them. Some of them simply taste like dirt with garlic butter on them (oh yum :rolleyes) other ones I've had tasted a bit like mushrooms. And again, if I want to eat something that tastes like mushrooms, I'll eat mushrooms.
Otherwise, there are no seasonal foods in the US anymore due to the influx of produce from South America...
I ate them both in France and they were ok. Since the taste is basically from teh sauce anyway and they tend to be pricey, I will stick with regular chicken. :mrgreen:

Actually, oysters are seasonal - only good in months that have an R in them.... And shrimp is best in the summer/early fall months - even though you can get them year round :???: As for the influx of produce from other countries, it may be available, but it doesn't mean it's good Nothing can beat a fresh watermelon in the summer - especially a green house one in February!
I've had snails - I was in Spain and thought the concolio was "conch" and suggested a friend get it (since conch is VERY popular here). When the tiny snails came out - she forced me to eat one (guilt trip BIG time!)
I ordered and consumed escargot twice in my life (me, too! Loved the garlic butter!). Then I moved to Washington State where their very close relative, the slug, lives. My stomach gets queasy just thinking about what I ate - gastropods are meant to be drowned in beer and then discarded - not eaten! Yuck! They get to be 8 inches long here (bigger yet in the rainforest).

ANYWAYS it is fun to put all that stuff on the cooks tray.
somebody mentioned earlier that she was thinking to stamp a head on the tray. iam curious what kind of halloween cards all the crative people will make with that set.
I agree....if I want something that tastes like chicken, I'll eat chicken. Even then, I can't think about where it came from.
I've never even had the urge to try frogs legs or escargot. I was in the Bahamas, where conch is big, and didn't try it. I live in Maryland, where crabs are king. I didn't even try them until I was in college, but I do love them! I had a friend come here once from England, so we served Maryland steamed crabs. He couldn't believe the "Bohemian" way that we ate crabs.
As long as I'm talking about food, there is nothing like a big juicy Maryland tomato in the summertime (although I'm sure lots of other states have good ones too). Also, silver queen corn from Maryland's eastern shore is out of this world! It's just about time to go out and buy some!!!!
Another seasonal dish in the Midwest, Indiana at least, is Morel mushrooms. Available for a few weeks, usually in April. I have seen dried ones for sale in specialty stores, but I think there's no way to grow them, you have to find them in the woods during "mushroom season"! And city folk pay a LOT of money for them!
I grew up on a farm in Missouri where we had several ponds and we'd go frog gigging once in a while and we really liked them. That was before we knew anything about garlic butter so my mother would fry them like chicken but I've not had any for a long time and snails, well, that's another matter.
No. Not for me. I'm a texture eater and I don't like the texture. I've had escargot once and really hated it. I would have been fine with the garlic butter with bread to dip. I haven't eaten frog legs. Can't bring myself to do it. I don't eat organ meats either.
I also don't like to touch spackle either. It's just gross. I do have to touch it at Habitat for Humanity though, but will pon that off any chance I can.
