Card base color
 

Thought I'd tap into your creativity. I went back to using white cs as my card base. I use nice colors, IMO, for the layers, but when the layering doesn't cover the majority of the base yucky. Sooo, my question to you all, what is your favorite color of cs to use for the card base? :confused:

I use all sorts of colors as my base. I usually plan my cards around using the "base" as one of my layering colors. I rarely use white as a base! If I am using a dark color for the base, I just glue an insert of paper inside the finished card in order to make it easier to write on.

I also don't use white as a base very much. I try to use a lighter tone as a base simply because it is easier to stamp/write inside. I love blush blossom, apricot, bashful blue. I also like SU's Naturals Ivory when I'm in the brown distressing mood. That said, I'm trying like heck to use brighter colors and am currently working on a card with a white base!

I use all...when i use white I ink the edges for more "ooommmppph"

All of your replies are a great help. Don't know why I went back to using white except I must have been trying to get contrast with some Valentines. I was feeling pretty bad about a card I did over three times last night. Happy creating gals.:D

I use just about every color for the base. When I use a dark color, I add a piece of typing paper glued inside the card so any writing/sentiment can be seen.

In my 11 years of card making, I can count on one hand how many times my cards had a white base. Just doesn't work for me. I use whatever color strikes my fancy. If it is dark, I use SU's white gel pen to write. Or I layer a lighter color inside, but not very often.

I'm probably the only one to do something totally different. My "base" card is 5.5" x 4.25" flat. It is usually a color -- coordinated w/the rest of the card. The actual card (that opens) is 5.25" x 8" (folded for 5.25" x 4") and attached to the base. It is usually white or vanilla. Then I layer or stamp on it.

The 4 cards in my gallery are done this way (one is a postcard -- flat).

I'm going to upload a few more cards that I made, this week, when I get back to work on the 2d. I have dial-up @ home -- and it would take weeeeeeeeks to upload a pic.

The flat base give the card a little bit more stability, IMO. Makes the other coordinating colors POP too.

Go figure - there seems to be no right or wrong choice here. I tend to like darks as my base. I like the way dark colors frame the layers (it's the quilter part in me, I guess). I like confetti white and "kraft" for one layer cards also. But I'm also a novice at this - don't have a lot of experience yet.

I just do whatever - sometimes white if I already know what goes inside the card so I can print it off before I do the outside, but I mostly use color bases. The advantage of color bases is that I can have cards on hand and then take the same color that I stamped my focal on (usually white or vanilla) and print off a personalized sentiment and attach that when I'm ready to give the card. I don't have a lot of inside sentiment stamps and tend to make larger cards so this is what works for me. One of the nice things about stamping is you can do it whichever way works best for you.

I almost never use the base as part of the cardfront design. I make a 4.25 x 5.5 cardfront first, then mount it on either white or vanilla cardstock (depending on which color was used on the cardfront.)

I also don't use a "base", I use whatever color works best with the card. IMHO I just think it detracts from the card to use a white base.

I recently received a card that was done this way and tried it out when making some cards for a hostess gift this morning. I cut a 4.25" flat square of apricot appeal, and mounted a 4"x8" pink card folded in half to make a 4"x4" square on it. I added another apricot layer that was 3"x3" and the final image was stamped on a 2.75" square of vanilla cardstock. Nice clean layout.

Regarding the OP's question, I sometimes use white as a base and generally when I do, my first color layer is cut to completely cover the white so you don't see it on the front of my card.

Learned some new ways to make cards from your posts. I'd never thought of doing the front and then attaching it to a white base card. Neat idea. This would be a great way of doing a bunch of cards with a single theme. The variety of your answers will make this even more fun. Of course after reading all the posts, I had to call my demo and order some new paper.:-D

I don't know why I never thought of that!! I alway make a card from and then pu it on a White or Cream base!!

I use many colours, but have recently gone to a white base as I am trying to simplify my cards....

I use any of the colors that are sold in packs of 40 by Stampin' Up! It makes my cards significantly cheaper for me to make, and since I make a lot, that matters. Then I alter the size of my card front, based on how I want the card to look. I generally cut it so that I have a 1/8-inch to 3/8-inch frame around the main layer.

So far, I've been very happy with this. I also cut these pieces ahead of time and file them, so that I can make a card in a hurry if need be.

I had to do that this morning, as I needed a Birthday card for a friend of mine. I was on my way to meet her for lunch, and had remembered the present, but - NO CARD?!? That was quickly fixed and I was on my way.

I've gone back to using white for some of my card bases, too. I also use colors for the bases. I just do whatever works for the design of the card. I don't make any hard and fast rules for myself; that way, cardmaking and scrapbooking remain fun for me. I have enough stress in my life, KWIM?

I don't think I have ever used white as the base of my card. The "base" is chosen usually as the main color and I choose other colors based off of that color.

If I use a darker cs, I just cut a piece of white/ivory (whichever matches best) and mat it inside to write on. I like to do that because it makes the card feel more substantial and not so flimsy. :)

I have noticed my base colors seem to change witht the seasons. I guess it depends on the look I am going for. I mostly use the colors sold in the lager packs but if I can not get what I want I do not limit myself.
