Buttons

I saw some really cute buttons at Michaels, they had sunflowers and ladybugs and things. Unfortunately the backs were not flat. What is the best thing to use to snip those annoying button shanks off so I can put them on my card?

There is a snipper tool that you can get that will cut them right off. My bet is that Michaels or Joanns has them. Can't remember where I got mine but it works really really well!

I borrow DH's little wire-cutting snips. You might even have a similar snip in your jewelry tools! ;) They're a bit like a short needle-nose plier with a cutting edge.

I've had pretty good luck with just a regular pair of old scissors that I use for things like this. I don't use my good paper or fabric scissors though.

Nail clippers are also useful for removing shanks. HTH!

All of the above work. Sometimes you can find the shank remover where the buttons are in craft stores like Michael's, JoAnn's, etc.

I use wire cutters too, they work great! Sometimes you can just break them off.

I use the same button shank removers as angelinoregon posted. They work great!

I just use an Xacto knife. Works great.

I use my wire cutters. I don't see the need to buy another tool when I already own something that does the job.

I also use the button shank remover (angelinoregon's post). It sits flush to the back of the button & makes a very clean cut. Regular wire cutters would work (but I can never find DHs toolbox) & I'd be making a trip to the ER if I used an x-acto; & wire cutters I use for making jewelry are reserved only for jewelry (would cost more to replace them than buying the shank remover). I've become a stickler on right-tool-for-the-job thing.

BTW - when getting ready to cut off the shank, don't hold the button by the sides - the shank will go flying when cut. Try holding the button between your thumb & index finger, sit the cutters flush against the button & just gently squeeze. Should leave you with a clean cut so the button sits nicely when adhered.
Have fun.

I use wire cutters. Those button shank removers look just like wire cutters though LOL!

Old professional cuticle clippers here...those things are expensive to sharpen to I recycled then into my scrap room and the work great on a variety of things

I love my button shank remover. It's also great for cutting off the long ends of brads, modifying embellishments, etc. I use it more ofen than my wire cutters because I can get closer because of the flat side. A tool I've never regretted having on hand.

Wire cutters will work like butter. I got mine in the floral craft department, use a 40% off coupon to save some cash. I think mine were $9.99.
