My faves at the moment are Paisley, Linen, and Aida Cloth. But I could make a case easily for French Script or Print Pattern as well.

But you may not want to listen to me - I'm a huge enabler when it comes to background stamps. I love them all! I got a little bit hooked on them, and suddenly I had over 50 of them. Yes, really...

I love weathered too! It is probably my most-used bg because it is so versatile and forgiving of less-than-perfect inking and stamping.

There are just too many to choose from! Looking around at the cards I've made recently, I see that the majority of them have more than one BG stamp. Linen and Canvas are good for adding a bit of texture, and Paisley is fantastic for something that can also stand alone (as can Floral). I actually have been pulling out Cheesecloth and Crosshatch a bit lately, and finally used Flannel Plaid (love it). So, I'd have to say my favorite is ALL of them (okay, so I'm no help!)!!

Ha! That's probably why I like it so much! I love geometric, too, but have barely used it ... because I couldn't do it! now my wonderful cousin has shown me the technnique - EVERYTHING gets a background stamped on it!!! (And I only have the two )

Here's what my top 3 (er.. 4) choices would be:
1. Canvas (MUST have!)
2. Print pattern
3. Paisley
4. Aida cloth
Is there more....? then it's
5. Weathered
6. Cheesecloth
7. Linen (only b/c it's like canvas but more softer)
I can go on and on.....so I'd stop here. (Get them all. It adds depth and dimension to everything. Can't go wrong.)

I think that the easiest thing to do is to post a poll and force everyone to choose just one. That is going to be extremely hard to do. I would have to list several: floral, french script, canvas, linen, weathered, aida, cheesecloth. See I don't think that you will have a lot of luck getting just one answer from us unless you do it in a poll and limit it to one choice. There are just to many good ones.

A poll would probably force the choice of one, but isn't it fun to see others are as addicted and have as difficult time as I have?

The newer paisley and floral are the ones that I use most, but following a close third is the Print Pattern. I love all the samples of the French Script, and have resisted buying it because I'm not a big fan of the French (silly, I know ), but I did break down and ordered it today. I'm sure I'll use my Franch Script a lot once it arrives!!!

Okay I am hooked on backgrounds. I cannot list only 1 stamp... sigh....but will tell you my favored...

Current backgrounds:
1. Print Pattern
2. Floral (like it best muted by doing tone on tone)

Retired backgrounds:
1. Filigree
2. Houndstooth

I use Linen more than any other background ever. It is such a subtle background, but it makes a huge impact on the cards. I find Canvas to be too distracting to me. It feels more like a background whereas Linen seems more like a watermark..if that makes any sense....it's just more subtle to me.

Canvas, Print Pattern, French Script.

But I don't have Linen yet. Flannel Plaid is looking promising also.

I just love my Print Pattern, floral and Aida Cloth. I don't have linen or canvas yet but they are on my list to purchase.

I love using two bg stamps together. Print Pattern and French Script is a good combo, as is Linen and Crosshatch.

I got Linen with the BG promo, and now I hardly EVER use Canvas, and I wasn't going to get it at all, as it was a lot like both canvas and the just jeans... But, having said that, I use linen almost all the time, and on almost every project!!!
So, if I had to pick just ONE, I think I would say Linen, for the reasons that others have listed.
BUT... my French Script is well used, and so is Print Pattern, I just got the new paisley, and it is GORGEOUS. I bought crosshatch thinking I would use it all the time, but I don't. Same with the other word one. (big rectangles, name is escaping me right now) Next on my wish list are wild hearts, aida, and word search, but I am a total background junkie!!
I really liked the advice of someone earlier that said to break it into categories, that's great advice in my book!!
Good luck with your choice, and I know whatever you choose, you will LOVE, because all the BG's are great!!

I can't believe no one has mentioned fontastic. I wasn't sure that I liked it until I went to my upline's meeting and another girl in our group had done an awesome card with fontastic stamped tone on tone. It was really cool looking and had the wild about lion on it. That being said, I would have to agree that Linen would be my 1st vote if you don't have any bg stamps. Have fun!

Linen, French Script, Print Pattern - I still use canvas a lot. My fave use is to put the canvas bg on card stock, then puch out - looks really good with the punch that matches Looks Like Spring (can't think of the name of the punch.) but it gives a really cute and sweet texture to the flowers. I just love it. I guess linen and cheesecloth would work for that as well. I also like weathered. There are times when it is just perfect, nothing else will do.
