Default BG advise needed

I want to get a BG stamp but am trying to decide between Cheesecloth and Linen. Which would you choose and why?

I would choose based on several things:

Cheesecloth- I've seen used as a net for butterflies and dragonflies or as a fish net. So if you have stamps like that, that would be a plus. (I'm sure there are many more pluses that others will share here.)

Personally I chose Linen over cheesecloth ~and~ canvas because of its realistic (again only my opinion) look.

Do you have canvas? Maybe cheesecloth then? Some say canvas and linen are very alike and some say they are very different-I agree with both sides actually.

Hope this helps you a bit.

I totally vote for Linen . . . .

It has such an all purpose look to it, it is great if you want to add just a bit of a textured look, you can even use versamark to make it so subtle.

It is great to layer with another background stamp like Print Pattern or French Script

Cheesecloth is great, but I think Linen is more versatile if you have to choose.

ohhh tough decision! I don't have either of these yet. I would try and think about which one you would get the most use out of (for instance, if you have a lot of beach and nautical themed stamps you might get more use out of the cheesecloth). I think I am going to go for the linen one myself. I love it. But hey! they both rock!
Best of luck with your decision

I vote for linen. Because it is more subtle, I believe it is more versatile.

I vote linen as it is more vesatile and can be used either more boldly or very subtle (color on color or versamark on color). Canvas is another very nice one. I like on linen using your fingers to walk across the stamp (facing up paper on top) to give more definition to certain areas of the stamp

That is a hard one because I have linen & want cheesecloth. I think if you want a little texture & want the canvas look behind images get linen. If you want more texture get cheesecloth as linen is really line & doesn't really stand out much. Or you could get both.

I'd say linen. It makes any ordinary piece of CS look like a canvas painting! Also cheesecloth would be limited in use due to the turned up corner. It looks great with the right theme, but linen looks great with every theme and syle of stamp! IMHO

I prefer the linen. The cheese cloth is kinda creepy or something. Linen can be classy or fun. It adds texture without being overbearing.

Ok ladies, I think I'm going for linen since most of you think it would be more versatile. I was leaning towards it anyways. I already own canvas and really like it. Linen it is! Now if there's anyone who wants to sway me the other way ... give it a try.

I LOVE cheesecloth. I bought it after receiving a beautiful swap with it in white craft ink over chocolate chip-simply gorgeous. I love using it for beach images or for Halloween as well i though it would be cute. I have Linen and think it is more subtle-so if that is what you prefer go for that.

I'd chose linen over cheesecloth. Linen is far more versatile and looks awesome with o many designs! Personally, I do not care for cheesecloth (and do not ever plan to own it) - I've seen a few wonderful cards done with it; but far, far more done with Linen. I use linen almost every day!!!!

I have linen and WANT cheesecloth! I honestly think ALL background stamps are fabulous, it just depends on what you want to use them with/for. I HATED both Houndstooth and Linograph when I first saw them, I purchased Houdstooth, and kind of wish I had purchased Linograph -- I've seen some gorgeous stuff with it.

If you were already leaning toward Linen, go for it! And make sure to try embossing with clear EP over top of an image for a really cool texture!

I have them both and love them both, and I use each of them for different purposes. The Cheesecloth is great for anything nautical, which I love, but Linen looks great with almost anything. If I could only have one, I would pick Linen.

Linen was my first choice. I love it and use it regularly. I also have Cheesecloth and Canvas and use both of them often too. Can't wait to get Aida next. All create a different look. I believe Linen will always be my favorite and will get the most use. Do stamps wear out? LOL

Both would be your best bet.

However ... if you really have to limit yourself to one ...
I'd go with linen ... I think it's more versatile. I've seen some lovely stuff with cheesecloth, but I'm more the subtle type. (hah! )

I like the "fabric-y" look.

Linen is more versatile. I don't think canvas has the same look at all. Linen is much more subtle. I have both and love them and will be ordering cheesecloth next.

I have cheesecloth, use it a ton, and do not have one nautical stamp. It actually never occured to me that it could be a net when I got it. I just love the bold texture I get when its embossed and it becomes an incredible backdrop for all sorts of things. Its one BG I could not live without. I also have linen and like it, too. I use it all the time, but its much more subtle and soft. Although I probably use Linen more, I have to say I'm more attached to my Cheesecloth. I'm not sure if that makes sense! I try to stay away from telling anyone they should choose a particular stamp. It really just comes down to what your personal style is and what you are naturally drawn to. My only recommendation is to follow your first instinct and if you were drawn to Linen first, that's probably the one you really want anyhow!
