Default Question regarding design teams

I am pretty in the dark about stamping companies and their design teams.
Doing something like that is out of my league right now.
I am just curious though, because everyone seems to want to be on design teams. Do you get paid? Are there perks like free stamps? It seems like it would be demanding and time consuming so I am just wondering what kind of compensation there is. Or..is it just for the sake of putting it on one's "resume'"? If you are on a design team for a company do they supply the products for your "designs?"

I started years ago as a SU demo but then fell in love with SO many other stamp companies! I am currently on the DT for two stamp companies and one on-line store. Each DT is different. Some teams get monetary compensation, some get free product, some get both. There are usually perks for getting published with the company's products. The requirements are also different for each one. Some do a specific number of projects and some just say...use all of the stuff. While it is time consuming, it is fun being able to use products that you really like.
