Glad you posted this. I've wondered about taking pages out of books. It just seems wrong somehow but then it does make sense that it is a great way to share the message on the page to create art with it.
I'm an "old" Methodist. We dedicate our hymnals, but there are only 2 sacraments we recognize coming from the Gospel...Baptism and the Eucarist. "Those five commonly called sacraments, that is to say, confirmation, penance, orders, matrimony, and extreme unction, are not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel."
Enjoy using your pages. So many old hymnals rot in basements and landfills. You will be raising the hymn for His glory when you use it and the person/s who receive the cards will be pleased and blessed, as the hymnal was already blessed in the dedication service. You will be an instrument of His blessing.
Does anyone know if there is a similar site that has Silent Night? I'm soooo wanting that. Or a stamp with old timey looking Silent Night? Or background paper?
At first blush I thought I'd be against (and not just because I'm Methodist...tee hee) but if it were being thrown away it would be a lot easier to justify. My sister was shocked that I used pages from an old book that was going to Goodwill - and it was just a romance book!
I did recently cut into my old organ lesson books - they've been sitting for 30 years, untouched!, in my organ bench and I decided it was time to "use" them. I like it because it's just some great & interesting notes and no words.
It 's a book....Yes it is a book of hymns but it is still a book.....silverfish would feast on it.....other types of vermin would call it lunch.....why would you worry about using the pages to create art? The post about the Pope blessing it gave me a ROFLMBO moment--as I can't imagine the Pope even touching a Methodist Hymnal...........It is meant to be used.....and if it is no longer in use as was originally designed....then use it the way you want.....come to think of it,,,,there are 3 or 4 of them around this house somewhere,,,,,,maybe I better search them out........

I wouldn't have any problem with an old hymnal, maybe the Bible. I found an old year book from a women's college in middle Georgia from the 30's. I tear pages out and make really cute cards with them. It was just wasting away in an old antique shop. Better it is looked at then buried in a box.

Think of it as a "retirement ceremony" & the pages are moving on to bigger, funner things! (Made me think of boy scouts doing a flag retirement ceremony). Also you could think of it as a "witnessing tool" ... Spread the word!
I was raised Catholic and thought we were suppose to feel guilty about everything!
LOL. I'm a lifelong Catholic and I never understood the misconception that we should feel guilty about everything, until I met my MIL, another lifelong Catholic. Oy. She could take the joy out of anything. I feel bad for her, because that is not the way I was taught.
Back to the point of the thread: I'd love to see people's creations with hymnals. They sound inspiring!
Serendipity! I read this thread in the morning and went shopping later. I came across Somerset Studio Nov/Dec edition. One article on page 8 has a torn musical page and at least one other article has musical scores in it.
I think they are done in a respectful and creative manner.

Ahh!!! This one would bother me much more than the old hymnal... not just as a history lover but as a former college annual editor.

My son was throwing some stuff in the dumpster at his work and saw a bible in the dumpster....he had to pick it out of the dumpster because he could not bear that someone put it in there. It was in great shape and he still has it. I have so many bibles but could not bring myself to throw one away or defile it in any way.
blessings.
A few years ago, during my internship at an emergency room, a patient left a bible in their room after they were released. It was worn, written in, highlighted and obviously loved. But worn out none the less.
The question was raised, was it wrong to throw it away? It had personal notes in it and such so passing it on to someone seemed wrong but when a Bible wears out, what do you do with them?
Long night of many exchanged ideas...a consensus was never found.
What do you do with a much loved and yet worn out Bible?
Every year when the 3rd graders get their Bibles, the pastor tells them that a person whose Bible is falling apart has a relationship with God that isn't (falling apart).

I couldn't do a bible, but a hymnal I could. A while back I had problems with tearing a page out of any book but I had an old book on plants that I kept around for years and never read it. I finally said either give it away or do something with it. I made this great card and now I can rip a page out of a book. Perhaps this technique will work for you.
The local literacy group does a big sale every year. By Sunday, most the books that are leftover are older and are likely headed to the compost. They're also super-cheap that day. I pick through and find old cook books and travel books that have beautiful images - I especially like retro stuff. Like someone else mentioned, I think it's better to create with them, then to throw them in the trash or let them rot on a shelf!
I love books (majored in English), but I think they're made to be appreciated. If they're not in reading-shape anymore, then it's time to get creative I say buy it, take it apart, and make it a new work of art!

I've heard that they're supposed to be burned. I'd call a church and ask what they advise.
actually, I think it's a cool question...it takes a special person to stop and consider whether or not someone might feel hurt by this!
I think that its all in the intent. If someone were to use Christian hymns to mock Christianity, I would find that distasteful. To celebrate Christmas or create something beautiful, that's a completely different thing!

I am at work in a very quiet library right now and laughed out loud! I agree with you, the good old Catholic GUILT!
I am a librarian and believe me people have trouble getting rid of any book. Some books need to be thrown away, if they are moldy, they will not do anyone any good.
If you find a good use for your hymnal, use it!

I think it would be beautiful and no a hymnal is not sacred, even if the hymn is. The last thing this planet needs is more photocopies of pieces of paper on more pieces of paper. Let's reuse what has already been put out to pasture.
Of course, you might want to check ebay etc. and make sure that is not the last copy on earth, but I sort of doubt it is.
Yeah, I would have trouble tearing up a Bible, even though there are a bazillion copies out there and I own at least 5 and they are all different.
I think this would be so beautiful. It took me years and years to get over tearing the cover off of a book and taking out the sheets inside. Now I take them off of the spine and put them into page protectors for using in our homeschooling work. Now this is just books that have games and such in them, I figure why photocopy the pages when if I cut them out of the book, put them into the protectors I can write on the protectors with dry erase markers and just wipe it off again with a paper towel.
Anyhow, I digress, I think this would be beautiful and definately want to see what you create if you do.
My opinion, such as it is, bible, no way, hymnal, sure why not. :-)

I had to read this comment 3 times and asked myself, "what's suppose to be burned, the book, the children?" hehe, I enjoyed a good laugh, hope it was meant to be that way!

Great thread. I'm one of those who has ripped up old music for my cards. I haven't yet done a hymnal, but I sure wouldn't hesitate if it was just sitting collecting dust and it had the perfect song. Mostly I've used stuff I found at a rummage (a huge box of sheet music, piano practice stuff, etc.). If you're using it as background, the words don't matter - almost any music will work. I'd say go for it.
Now, a Bible, on the other hand, would be something I couldn't rip up. Even if its written in and falling apart. Too precious.
AS a church musician, I know too much about copyright laws, etc. If the hymn is in public domain, you have no trouble photocopying it and using it for art. If it isn't in public domain, the honest thing to do would be to contact the publisher for permission. In my use of music on cards where I've needed to contact the publisher, permission was readily granted and no fees were required. I have also taken apart an old hymnal and yellowed the pages with tea if they weren't dark enough, and used pieces of the Christmas songs along with brass musical instruments in a Christmas wreath.
I have an old hymnal, with no sentimental ties, however, I still could not bring myself to tear it apart. Instead I scanned it and printed a hymn on card-stock. Here is a link to the card I made with it.
Well....Old timer Methodist here and I find no err with using a page of any Hymnal and turning into a work of art...What better way to grace a verse or two...
Another Old timer Methodist here!!! My opinion kept changing as I was reading the posts, but this one convinced me. They could definetley be a work of art and I am thinking it would make a beautiful background on a sympathy card. Be sure to post pictures of how you use it. My hymnal isn't old enough to tear out pages, but someday I many come across one.
Thanks for a fun and unusual question. Merry Christmas everyone!!!
I'm an old time Methodist. Was raised a Methodist. Played piano and organ and sang in the choir when I was in my teenage years. My favorite hymnal is the Cokesbury hymnal. Not the newer ones. All my favorite hymns are in that book and I only have one. I'm not tearing that book apart. I do have a red Methodist hymnal and I wouldn't mind tearing the pages out of it to use. Both hymnals are boxed in my garage since the Methodist leaders irritated me about 5 years ago.
Anyhow, I wouldn't even have a problem using an older Bible (I have more than one anyway) especially as background for some of the inspirational stamps out there in stampland. God is in my heart not in my Bible. So that wouldn't bother me.
But since I have close to 5000 books anyway, I now have too many ideas roaming around in my head. Shoot my DH would be happy to see some of the books used up anyway.

Please don't hate me! I wallpapered with a Bible! Let me explain. We have a mentally disabled son who is 33 years old. We've had him since he was 4. He loves church and carrying a Bible, but he's very hard on them, so I always get him inexpensive ones. After a while the pages start falling out. When he had several like this I removed Psalms and Proverbs from 4 or 5 that probably would have been tossed anyway. They were all different sizes and fonts. I crumbled them up. Then flattened them out again. I adhered them to a short hallway wall, painted them with coffee to age them, and sealed with a spray-on varnish. It's beautiful. I first saw something similar done with copies of old love letters. What greater love letter than the Word of God!
I feel that using the pages from an old hymnal would give the hymns a new life and perhaps touch the heart that sees them on a card. I would love to receive a card with a hymn incorporated into it. In fact, I am going to search for some old hymnals myself. Thanks for the heavenly idea!

This is beautiful. Blessings to you for keeping your son well-stocked with the Word over the years. You've also found a way to keep the Word in front of you every single day.
