I finally took the plunge and I am almost done unmounting all my SU stamps and putting them in CD cases. I have left the foam on just in case I change my mind, but I was curious. Do you think it would devalue my stamps if say I wanted to sell them in the future as is and not worry about remounting them? What trend do you see on the bay?
I saved my SU blocks and this way I can offer the buyer an option. With so many of us going UM, I think there would be a market for them. I know I purposely look for sellers with UM.
If I buy SU stamps on ebay I want them to be mounted....I have not gone unmounted yet and no plans to in the near future. I would just suggest that if you ebay any of them you make it very clear that they are UM so you'll have a totally happy buyer!

I guess as long as you clearly state that the stamps are unmounted. The buyer can either bid on your set or look for a set that is mounted on wood.
I am unmounting my SU stamps because I am running out of storage space. It would be not be space saving for me to save the wood blocks. If I had the room to store the wood blocks, I would certainly have room to store mounted stamps.

Currently my wood blocks are in buckets for my kids to play with. I wouldn't know which stamp would go with which block. I guess I can keep them for a while and/or chance selling at a slightly lesser price for any stamps that I would want to sell.
I think you can expect to get less for unmounted SU. In general, any time something is in "original condition" it will get a higher price. If the wood or rubber was stained you would also probably get less. I had CTMH stamps that were mounted, I would get less for them, etc.
I have EZ Mounted a majority of my SU sets but will be keeping my blocks just for the reason you've posted. While I no longer have room in my craft room to keep everything wood mounted, I do have space elsewhere to store the original cases and blocks. Well, at least I'll have the space once I clean out the garage. ;)
I wouldn't buy SU unmounted from anywhere. I know that you bought them with the blocks and I would expect to buy what you did.
You are quite entitled to unmount, but I would want to buy my SU in the clear box, wood mounted, or with the blocks if it is new, but it just wouldn't feel like SU to me without the wood.
I have unmounted my SU stamps and look for SU auctions that haven't been mounted yet or are on static cling. I have bid on a few auctions were the seller had mounted the SU stamps on static cling - believe me, it did not depreciate the price of the stamps at all. I think there are just as many people that have gone unmounted as those that mount their SU stamps on blocks.

I forgot to say that I was going to keep my blocks in case a buyer ever wanted them and decided the attic fire hazard wasn't worth it! There is a market for wooden blocks on E-bay. I sold mine in mix lots of 60 and roughly got $22 an auction. Plastic cases, same thing.

Well I purchased them that way and when I get ready to sell them I will sell them as wood mounted rubber stamps.
Plus I think it affects the selling price...When you unmount your wood mounted stamps!
Cause Stampin' up! is known for their stamps being wood mounted.

If you like unmounted rubber stamps then why don't you start out with unmounted rubber stamps.
By unmounting them, you are paying for more supplies than you would if you purchased them w/o the wood blocks.

When I started stamping, I had no idea that I would own SU 300+ stamp sets 5 years later! It became a room issue for me and because I live in an area where we evacuated for Hurricanes, I hated leaving my stamps since soooo many are retired etc. I now can take them with me - they may be all I have when I return, but I'm takin' them! Plus, I love SU images, I think they are the best! I recover the money spend on an SU set when I sell the wood blocks and plastic cases. I feel like it is a wash.
That is what my drivers are for unmounting!

Like I said, I just started unmounting the sets I have. I actually have found that I am buying less SU sets recently, but the sets I still get I love. I buy what I like. I have both acrylic and rubber and love the images on both.
I think you will find a buyer out in EBayland for both mounted and unmounted. So many people out there buying...
In the past, I always tried to keep my stuff in great condition for resale, and finally realized I wasn't using things the way I wanted (specifically, my baby items for my boys). So now I just use them, and if they are in resale condition when my boys outgrow them, so be it. If not, oh well. I am applying the same thought to my stamping stuff. I am going to enjoy my stamps and do what works best for me and my stamping space. There is always a buyer out there for the right price. :-)
I'm pretty new to stamping, so pardon my silly question, but how do u use them if they are unmounted?
You use a clear acrylic block. You can also attach something called EZ Mount to the stamp which is a foam like the foam you get on a wood mounted stamp and it statically clings to the block so you don't need an adhesived to attach the rubber to the block!
Unmounted is the best thing that ever happened to my stamping!!! I am in a stamp club and we stamped this weekend. One of the new people had never stamped UM (our whole group has gone UM). It was so fun to watch her be so delighted about being able to position things perfectly and to do the 2 step stamping without a bit of stress. She told me last night she is busy ripping all her rubber off her stamps while she waits for her order of EZ mount and acrylic blocks.
I look for stamp sets that are not mounted yet when I purchase on buy/sell/trade. I use all unmounted stamps except for backgrounds. I like the added bonus of cheaper shipping too...oh, and I have LOTS of unused, empty SU Cases and TAC cases as well as wooden blocks...I would sell them on the Bay but it would cost a fortune to ship due to my geographic location.
I recently bought two unmounted sets on the bay, and bid more for them than I usually would have because they were already mounted on ez cling!!! HTH....
Another fan of wood mounted stamps here, although I have bought some unmounted BGs from CHF. Don't think I would buy SU! stamps on ebay (or anywhere for that matter!) that were unmounted...they were "meant" to be mounted.

You're questions is NOT silly!
There are Stamp companies out there that sell Unmounted stamps.
The stamps are either Unmounted Rubber Stamps or Acrylic Stamps.
The Unmounted Rubber stamp are like the regular Rubber Stamps but they either have a Ez-mount foam or some other sticky backing to them. And you use an Acrylic Block instead of Wood block.
The Acrylic Stamps are see through and have no foam with them they use a Acrylic block instead of wood block.
Here is example of what a unmounted Rubber stamp looks like on Ez mount foam.
I use stamps from TAC (The Angel Company) they are Blue Rubber Stamps that are deeply etched.
And they use the Ez-mount Foam...(TAC calls it Creative Cling foam) Which is the same stuff as the Ez-mount foam.
I also am a equal opportunity stamper and purchase stamps from just about everywhere!
Althought I like the unmounted stamp because of it cost and Space saving.. I do like using Wood mounted stamp too...

I've unmounted most of my retired SU. I'm saving the wood blocks with the stickers in their case in the storage room just in case I need to sell. I imagine that the stamps will fetch more remounted on the original wood. If I get brave enough, I may eventually take the plunge and ditch the wood!

There are trade-offs; for me, I would rather use the stamps as I please and not worry about if two years down the road I would make an extra five dollars by keeping the wood blocks if I happened to choose to sell that stamp set. We don't have a lot of storage space, and for me useless clutter is something I try to avoid, even in an attic or crawlspace. I buy my stamps to use, not to re-sell, so I make my choices based on making them easier to use. That's just my take on it; YMMV.
